MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After the application was complete, how long did it take for it to be verified ?

I honestly have to say that I have had an amazing experience with the advisors at UC Berkeley, no other school has tried as hard to call every week or so to check up and see how I am doing and to ask if I have any questions and now I get an email saying they are offering me $500 in travel funding to visit them?! I think I'm in love 😍

They are sooo welcoming, it's incredible. $500 is definitely going to cover a roundtrip flight from NC to CA, thank goodness. I've received a few emails and even phone calls from current students and advisers. They're trying really hard and I hope it'll also be evident in whatever funding they might give me 🙂 🙂

I e-mailed Tufts yesterday, 9:01 am (I'm type A like that). No word back at all. I just asked about the general status of my application, and then asked a few other questions I'd been thinking about. Namely, is it even remotely possible to do their amazing post-bacc pre-med program while working towards the MPH. I hope I hear something next week. I'd like to think they can figure it out before Havahd.

Got accepted to UC Berkeley's MPH in Epi and Biostats!! Anyone know when they typically give scholarship info? This is probably my top choice, but also the most expensive program I applied to (I'm out of state)...

It looks like a few of us are hot and heavy with interviews. Attached is some guidance I used to help prepare that might be of some benefit to you.

I did several run-throughs of all the questions on Page 5 and it helped immensely. I never would have thought to reflect on some of those things, so it was good to explore them and formulate responses to them. More than anything, it fostered a sense of confidence before I stepped up to the plate. The "Dos and Don'ts" are also great. Best luck...

Heard from Tufts that their last admissions committee meeting is next week, so we should be hearing back soon if we haven't already. They might just not have gotten to us or are still debating our status. Fingers crossed!

Dear Jesus. I applied early, too! When did you apply? Which concentration? How did you find out? Sorry with the questions, but since I'm on a roll, what is the meaning of life?

Edit: I can read, you're nutrition.

I applied on January 12 (verified the 23rd) to Global Health and heard back February 2nd telling me to go check my account for a posted decision. Hope that helps

Got an email from UNC-Chapel Hill today. No bueno. It was a sort-of-nice rejection (directly from the department I applied to), but I'm sure it was a generic explanation. I'm still crossing my fingers for those that applied there- their program is incredible! Hopefully all you guys hear better news today! After all, we are all in this together!

Sorry to hear about your rejection 🙁, do you mind if I ask to what department/program you had applied?

Predominantly applied to Health Policy and Management/Administration tracts; no scholarships so far, no grants, no correspondence prior to acceptance emails/letters.

Undergrad School:
University in the East [public school, not particularly high ranking]
Undergrad GPA: 3.447
Major/Minor: Biomedical Sciences
GradGPA (if applicable): No idea but probably 50% or lower class rank?
Grad Studies: Graduating Med School this Year [not AOA]
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Verbal 156 71 Quant. 159 74 Writin 4.0 56

Experience/Research (please, be brief):
No research at all

***Please include the following whenever possible: specific concentration/track, dates, type of correspondence (phone, email, letter, etc.), scholarships/grants. Judging by last year's thread, yes we are this obsessive and neurotic.***

Accepted: Columbia, Yale

I am a bit curious about the financial process for Columbia's MPH and UCLA's MPH program. I haven't heard anything about the scholarship information yet since I am still waiting for the graduate division emails. Are we also supposed to fill out a separate financial component as well?

Re: Columbia, I don't think there's a separate form for scholarships, but there is one for financial aid that they ask you to fill out if accepted. I don't believe they've sent out that info yet, though? At least one person on this thread has gotten notice of a merit scholarship so far.

It's okay, I knew it would be a reach. (Still would have been nice to get in though haha.) I applied to their Environmental Sciences and Engineering department (MSPH), concentrating in Water Resources. The student services assistant from the department contacted me directly about the decision.

Yeah, I applied to the joint MPH/MS Nutrition program, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with why it's taken so long for me to hear back. I sent in both apps on Jan 10. Found out by emailing one of the dudes that works in the admissions office about the status of my app.

In other news, just got in at UMass for MPH in Community Health, whoo! Probably won't go, since it's not near the top of my list (if I had to choose from what I have so far, it would be UTSPH), but still. 3 acceptances so far, fingers crossed I keep the streak going!

How'd you find out about UMass? When did you apply?

My app for Hopkins was forwarded to the HPM dept on December 6 and I still haven't heard back from them! That's my #1 school and I want to know if I'm in before I start planning on Emory. If Emory comes in with a financial boost later this month that will push me even further to Atlanta.

I'm just outside the 10 weeks now. Anybody else in this boat?

Me too! Mine was forwarded on Dec 1, so I'm outside 10 weeks. Super frustrating.

On grad cafe it looks like a lot of people are hearing back from Hopkins so hopefully soon for you!

Anyone heard from GW recently? I was told my decision was ready over a week ago but I still haven't heard what that decision is

I spoke to Cristina Salazar, the admin program manager for the International Health department, and asked her when admission results for the MSPH program was going to be released. she said in 2-6 weeks 🙁

I think it varies by department. No harm in giving your department a call to get a better time estimate.

Congrats to all who have been accepted! I applied to the part-time MPH Summer start program at Hopkins through SOPHAS and was verified late december...has anyone heard back yet? I was accepted to GW Fall start but am getting anxious about Hopkins!!

Has anyone started a thread for Columbia's MPH? I had questions and didn't want to make one if someone else already made one!

Does anyone know if it's possible to do Columbia's post-bacc pre-med program while doing the MPH?

You could definitely look into it! although, I highly doubt it since post-bacc schedules are almost more credit hours than your first year of med school.

Yipes!! I do have roughly half of the pre-reqs, just need to get caught up on OChem, Physics, Genetics, and maybe Biochem. So maybe I could do it in the summer.

@KPZ, when I emailed Tufts that was my big question, in addition to the basic 'Hey, brah, did you lose my app?' I've got essentially no pre-reqs but if you do it with Tufts, BU and Tufts allow a special interview and blah, blah.

I got offered a scholarship from UCLA with the email saying that I got admitted. I did not fill any other separate component for that. No update from Columbia so far about the scholarship.

Anybody know when the admitted students day is for UC Berkeley and Yale?

Hi All-
Has anyone heard back from Michigan?I applied to their early deadline and have yet to hear back besides the "your application was complete" which was at the beginning of January. I applied to the HBHE Program. Any ideas?

In at BU for epi! Annnnd a no from Emory. I swear every time I get an acceptance the universe knocks me down a few pegs alarmingly quickly. Oh well, still a happy camper. Sidenote: Emory didn't notify me at all, I checked OPUS after probably a week of not checking and the decision letter was just hangin out there.

Congrats on BU! Sorry to hear that about Emory, though. At least you've been accepted to some great schools so far!

UC Berkeley sent out an email with just the date which is March 16th 🙂 we're supposed to get more details soon!

Just got rejected from Hopkins. Didn't expect to be accepted since I don't have any professional experience in public health, just glad the wait is over. Now I just have to hear from Harvard, which is likely to be a rejection as well.

Oh cool. Just waiting to hear back from Yale and UC Berkeley with their decisions right now. I expected to hear back by now since most people here have had their decisions, I had SOPHAS verified by mid-November, and I heard back from UCLA two weeks ago! Oh well.

They have it on 16th? Monday? Wonder what's the rationale behind that is...

Yale is Friday March 27th; they tell you in the email.

If you don't mind me asking, when did you hear back from Claremont? I applied to the dual MPH/MA program, si they said it would take longer, but I'm dying to find out.

Hi KPZ, did you receive an email or did they use another form of communication?

An e-mail. It came at 6:25 PM, so it can come after the work day. I applied to the MPH through SOPHAS. I know other programs have different processes there.

Do you mind letting me know... when did you hear from UNC Health Behavior? I'm anxiously awaiting any news from them, even sent an email to admissions asking about a timeline early last week and didn't hear back. Was it via email or the portal?
