MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question: what happens if you accept and then decided to reject the offer later on? If you're denying the school together I don't think they're able to hold that against you anymore lol right?

That's what I was thinking. This one is pretty high on my list, so I may likely end up going there anyway. But I didn't know how bad it would be to accept and then decline later if I choose a different program.

Yea, I'm on the ethical side of life lol but sometimes you just don't have time like when you're given a hot 5 seconds ... But if you decline it later they can't hold it against you if you decide to go elsewhere

I'm sure they'll have another individual who will fill the seat

Hey! I'd like to start a new thread "Johns Hopkins MPH- 11 month 2015". I don't think there is one yet. Do enlighten me, in case there is one.
I haven't seen one but would be interested in joining if you start it.

Has anyone been invited to an admitted applicants day without receiving a formal acceptance first? I just received an email from UNC inviting me to attend the admitted students day this week. Submitted as re-applicant to SOPHAS 3/1 (still not verified), school application to UNC 3/8.

Do you have an idea what its called?

There is University Village, which is only for married students & families, but right next to it there are also the Rose Avenue apartments. The Keystone/Mentone apartments look like they're in a similar area?

I don't know much about the quality of any of the apartments, but I had a friend who lived in the University Village and said she enjoyed her time there mostly due to the convenience and the price.

Anyone hear from Columbia today? Or UIC? ... All I'm hearing are crickets...

Still waiting on UTHouston but that will be the last decision and the waiting is over. It's been three weeks and the page has changed for checking admission status but nothing that says accepted/denied/waitlisted. Accepted to Columbia, BU, Drexel, GWU! Applied for HPM for Columbia and Community Health sciences for other schools so not really on the super competitive side of things (IE Epi) but still pleased!!! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! 1 month to decide!

Still nothing from Columbia here yet either. I'm hoping they say something soon. It's officially mid-March.

Yes it is! This Wed will be officially be 4 weeks since my interview! But I guess at this point no news is good news right?

Did anyone get rejected?

Just rec'd my financial award package from Columbia via email. The first school to send one out of the 4 I applied to. Finally!!!!

I don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing, but it definitely makes my decision much harder

Just accepted to Georgia State University's biostat MPH with Graduate research Assistantship for 2 years and a monthly stipend. I knew that I would be accepted, just didn't think they'd give me money. To me honest, I don't even know much about the program and I applied cause it was in Atlanta. It doesn't seem to be ranked according to USN.

God damn it. I was pretty set on going to Emory's MPH/MSPH Biostat program. (no money)

Ugh. what to do... Any input you guys?

Yeah. Bunch of spots should open up on Columbia's wait list after those aid packages, or at least my spot! Bye Felicia

;-( eeek I'm getting worried though I should be focused on first things first... Get in!

God maybe I should take my GRE next week and finish my apps for the schools I applied too that still want a GRE score... Why am I so lazy

Just thought I would repost my stats since I have heard back from all the schools that I applied. Please note that I am an international student but I am getting my undergrad degree in the U.S.

Undergrad School:
a small state university (college of public health is CEPH-credited. rank #31)
Undergrad GPA: 3.976
Major/Minor: Public Health (Health Service Administration concentration); dual minors in Business Management and Emergency/Disaster Response Management
GRE: V 160 Q 162 AW 3.5 (Taken 6/14/14) - my writing score was just sad.
Experience/Research (please, be brief):

Public Health Related:
- 2 months summer research experience in China for a CDC project on the nutrient needs of pregnant females.
- 2 months summer internship in New York City working with the undeserved Asian American immigrant population; conducted a large-scale community health project.
- Will have a 12-week field experience, 400 hours (as part of my UG program requirement) at the headquarters of an International Public Health NGO in summer 2015.
- Working as a research assistant at the college of medicine right now; focusing on research in child health disparities in rural Appalachia.
- Exec board member of Public Health Student Association

Other experiences:
- 2 months summer internship at an international summer school in China.
- 1.5 year working as Resident Assistant on campus
- various leadership roles and extensive volunteer experiences throughout college.

Planning to Apply: Emory (Global Health), Tulane (Global Health), Yale (SBS), Columbia (SMS), GW (Global Health - DME), Boston (Global Health)
Accepted: Emory (Epi), Tulane, Yale, Columbia, Boston
Waitlisted: Yale

At this point, I am leaning towards Emory or Columbia. But I am also considering deferring for a year to gain more work experience. I don't know whether Columbia will let me defer or not so we will see about this.

Is it weird if I ask in the already admitted thread if anyone interviewed and was accepted the same week I was? For Columbia... I don't want to open the doors and skew their thread off topic since they're all admitted but good Lord I cannot keep refreshing my email for a 4th week lool (Apart of me wants to cry, but I am choosing to laugh and send out those positive vibes )

Hi I heard back 4-5 weeks after my interview so hang in there. Also the school is on spring break right now (not sure if faculty/staff are) but that might delay decisions.

Ahhh man lol they're on spring break... usually the faculty members/staff are as well. At lest my mom's university they're dismissed the whole week.

I guess I won't be checking my email periodically. I'm hanging in there

I received a Dean's scholarship from Johns Hopkins for the online/PT MPH program. I got the email after 7 PM today-didn't expect to get correspondence from them at such a time. It's only enough to cover a little over 2 credits.

Still waiting to hear back from A&M!!! This. Is. Maddening.

It's wayyy past the 6 week point for my application. This is getting ridiculous.

That's a pretty nice offer! I applied to GSU, but still haven't even heard back. Although to be honest, I never sent in my residency form. Like you, I pretty much only applied because it was in Atlanta. I'm pretty set on where I plan to attend, so I'm not really waiting to hear from them. Although if I got an offer like yours, it would definitely make the decision much more difficult.

I'm so tired of refreshing my e-mail! I applied so many months ago. At this point, I'm pretty sure I've decided on a school. I find myself unable to actually commit until I have heard from everybody though. It's such an issue :help:.

Anyone know when Pitt is supposed to release their financial aid packages?

Yea... After my Emory and Columbia acceptances I didn't really care what other schools accepted me, so this was really out of the blue. I'm also not a Georgia resident.

Reading the offer letter now, it says that I have to work 16 hr/ week at the assigned assistantship, but doesn't tell me which one? I'm worried that I'll be placed in something irrelevant to my concentration, when I could be doing a biostats related project... I guess I'm not sure how assistantship really work.

( still waiting on UNC, ugh)

Yeah, my online portal for them says that they are missing all of my information. They weren't my top choice anyways though, so I never bothered checking with them to figure out why that was the case. It seems odd that they didn't tell you what your assistantship would be. Maybe that comes later?

People waiting on Tufts - several friends just informed me a wave of decisions just got released. Good luck 🙂

On a related topic, need severe help deciding where to go next year!

UTSPH pros:
  1. It's UT. Everyone in Texas (where I want to work) recognizes the name. No need to explain to the layperson (read: HR who actually does the hiring) what and where Tufts is.
  2. Located at the Texas Medical Center, largest one in the country. Some good connections with MD Anderson. Lots of opportunities to volunteer or intern.
  3. I like Texas weather xD
  4. I'm currently in Texas (Austin), so relocation costs won't dig a hole in my pocket.
  5. Cost of tuition. $5k for a year (in-state resident pricing) is really damn hard to beat. I have a lot of debt (read: $50k) from undergrad + squandering a few years of my life, so any chance to NOT get more into debt is a huge plus.
UTSPH cons:
  1. No integrated MPH/MS Nutrition program. I can still get both of the degrees in a shorter amount of time by doing an MS Nutrition program at TWU (which is located on the Houston campus), but the travel between schools + lack of cohesiveness is a little bit of a turn-off.
  2. Houston. Blah. I hate driving.
  3. UTSPH isn't as highly ranked as Tufts is...?
Tufts pros:
  1. Integrated MPH/MS Nutrition program!
  2. Boston! I lived there for undergrad and love love love the city.
  3. Friedman school REALLY wants me. They literally sent me my acceptance the week after my application was complete and the director has been very transparent in emphasizing the fact that the committee director really wanted me for the program. I might even be able to talk them into giving me more money.
  4. On that note, they gave me a $25,000 scholarship.
Tufts cons:
  1. Cost of tuition. I got a $25,000 scholarship, but that doesn't change the fact that a year's worth of tuition is about $30,000.
  2. Cost of living in Boston. I love Boston, but trying to find cheap housing there in a modern building is nigh impossible. The area around Tufts Medical Center isn't the best either (mainly Downtown/Chinatown), so I would probably be commuting in.
  3. Can't see myself staying in Boston long-term. It's just not an ideal place for me or my long-term significant other to settle down. The Tufts name is not particularly strong in the state that I wish to settle down in (Texas), so I'm not sure it will be worth it.
I'm not 100% set on going the nutrition route, by the way. If I were, it would be Tufts in a heartbeat (one of the best schools of nutrition science in the nation). Thoughts?

Reading this from an outside perspective it seems like you want to UTSPH. The main pro for Tufts is that it has an integrated MS/MPH Nutrition program. However, you noted that you aren't 100% set on nutrition, so I don't think it would make sense to give up UTSPH for that!

Read on Columbia's academic calendar and it says most administrative offices are still open this week. So hopefully that includes the admissions office and we hear something this week.

Sigh, it also says decisions would be released Early-March ***but positive for the both of us .
I would be happy with Columbia or UIC. Chicago is a beauty and I love love living here.

Which concentration have you applied too again?

Yes positive vibes!!!
Me too!! Still waiting on UIC too. I've lived in the West and South; Midwest and NE are calling my name =)

Hey all. This thread was a great help when creating my application. So to give back...

Undergrad School:
University of Miami
Undergrad GPA:
3.74
Major/Minor:
Finance and Economics
GradGPA
(if applicable): 3.96
Grad Studies (if applicable): Northwestern University, MS in Predictive Analytics
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): GRE was good...forgot the score...I'm thinking Q was 165 and R was 160?
Experience/Research (please, be brief): No research experience. Was a healthcare six sigma master black belt consultant for 3 years, generating $30 million in cost savings for several large healthcare institutions.

***Please include the following whenever possible: specific concentration/track, dates, type of correspondence (phone, email, letter, etc.), scholarships/grants. Judging by last year's thread, yes we are this obsessive and neurotic.***

Applied: (See below) + Johns Hopkins (haven't heard back)
Accepted: Harvard (with $10k scholarship), Drexel (full ride), Washington University in St. Louis ($25k scholarship w/ offer to interview for $45k fellowship), Dartmouth ($10k scholarship), UPenn, Emory, Columbia
Rejected: Vanderbilt, Yale
Waitlisted:

In my application, my "pitch" was despite my lack of a science background, as a process enginerr/data scientist I'd like to study biostatistics/epidemiology to bring big data into healthcare delivery because algorithmic population health management is absolutely the future. Good luck all!

About a week ago UIC emailed me to tell me my app is finally being reviewed. Emailed them to ask about an estimated turnaround but they couldn't give me a time frame... I feel like every time I ask them a Q I get such a brief-vague response

Just received notification of Emory's Service Scholarship ($5,000) . This one kind of made me laugh cause they sent an official letter and everything and tried to make it seem all special. I mean I already knew I was going to receive this because I had done an Americorps year and on their website, they state that they'll match up to 5,000 of our Americorps Education award.

On that note though, It's kind of ridiculous that Emory scholarships are not cumulative, meaning if I get another scholarship (unlikely to happen) of a higher amount, it replaces this one. What?

Also, UNC PLEASE JUST LET ME KNOW SO THAT I CAN BE DONE WITH ADMISSIONS SHENANIGANS. Thanks.
