MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the same situation, I'm going with expensive school with the specific program. It might cost more but I think it will be worth it for more/better networking and connections in the long run.

Thanks! Yeah Im so conflicted cause UGA wants to know if I accept there proposition 3/27 and Colorado drops aid 4/1 🙁 Also, I think Im going on to a PhD so like do I wanna spend my money here or (potentially) later (if i go)...

DECISIONS

Hah, just got off UTH scholarship waitlist. 1k total. Such a help.

Same. But it's actually helpful for me, since it also gives me in-state tuition.

So I'm between a ~$10,000 degree at UT-Austin or a ~$64,000 degree at Emory... the extra debt can't be worth it, can it?

Same here, got the email today. And I am in between $10,000 and $62,000 (Hopkins).

Wait, haven't you already accepted your admissions offer from Hopkins? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Anyone attending Harvard for comp bio and quantitative genetics?? Just heard back today!

My heart has been already with Hopkins.. But it is not easy to reject UTH's super cheap tuition and living cost in Houston. My friends say that just take the best for future. I also know money talks many things.. but it's not a simple turn down.

I have been wondering why UTH declined in rankings from 12 to 20 something in last 3 years. Does anyone know the reason? When I met UTH students at prospective student day, all said that they liked their school.
I am also interested in how its program is strong and competitive in global market..

I feel you. It is a super expensive program. How did you spoke to them? Did you just send them an e-mail or gave a call? I was wondering if there is also a way for us to find out.
Same here.
I sent them an email as well and received a somewhat generic answer.

Mee too. I'm confused. First UTH e-mailed everyone that they were on the scholarship waitlist, and now this. Doesn't this seem a bit off? Or maybe they hadn't actually made a decision when we got the earlier mail? I just hope this isn't a mix up or whatever. 😳

Anyways, YAY! This is such a great news for me. :highfive: :soexcited:

Or people are turning it down/not attending UTH so they have money to spread around. if u had a choice between UTH or a higher rank, I'd definitely choose higher rank. Our medical center is alright, but I don't feel like a UTH degree carries much weight. (I'm obviously biased but just throwing that in).

I've got a letter to see my Harvard decision. However, I suddenly couldn't log into my portal. It's quite weird. I didn't change my password. Is it a bad sign? Would they cancel my ID/password just because reject me? Quite worrying.

I've been lurking for awhile and finally decided to post something... I'm focused on health management and policy and have been accepted to several MPH programs:
Michigan HMP (+ scholarship),
Yale Healthcare Management,
Harvard 65-Healthcare Management, and
Columbia Health Policy (+ scholarship)

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding between Michigan, Yale, and Columbia - is anyone in a similar position? I'd love to hear which factors you are considering and which schools you are leaning towards!

Thanks!

Accepted to JHU's MBA/MPH program today! I'm really happy, was not expecting to get in at this point because I hadn't heard anything and was verified before 12/1.

I'm having a really hard time deciding on schools - I am not sure whether to prioritize a stronger MBA or MPH program. I've been trying to find students currently in combined degree programs and alumni to help give advice, but I'm having a lot of trouble weighing the pros and cons.

This might be a silly question, but I haven't submitted my FAFSA yet (i'm still waiting to hear back from the person doing my taxes).. will submitting my FAFSA later hurt my chances of getting need-based scholarships and aid? i.e. do the funds...run out/get given out on a rolling bases? lol

If you've filed taxes in the previous year, you can place estimates in the fafsa and send them to the schools so that you don't need to send it later. I think some schools do it on a rolling basis, so I would just put estimates in the mean time. Hope that is helpful!

When I received my user ID & temporary password from HSPH, the email stated "The temporary password will lock your myHarvardChan portal access after five logins. Please be sure to click on the “Manage your Novell/myHarvardChan Account” link to access the SPH Password Manager where you can set your
permanent password. If you have trouble logging into myHarvardChan, please contact the Helpdesk at [email protected] or 617-432-4357."

Good luck! 🙂

Got selected for in-state tuition (ROOST award) at UGA!

Now gotta decide, what do you guys think?

Cheap schooling --> only one faculty member is studying what I want to do only and the program is just general health promotion, not specific (UGA)
VERY expensive schooling --> everyone is studying what I want to study and the program is specific to what I want (Colorado- Physical Activity)
go colorado! you only get this chance once in your life. Athens is a typical SEC, party, football school and can get pretty distracting... not to say that colorado's nature wont do the same... but if I were you, Id choose colorado!

Ive always wanted to go to Colorado... and until my recent UMich admission... this was the case. I never expected to get in to UM... AND get a scholarship. Right now, it would be about the same as far as tuition goes for Colorado and Michigan... now I am torn between a dream home of mine (colorado) and the #3 globally ranked MPH program (UM)....

The more I look at living in Ann Arbor... the more it scares me (housing/cost of living)! Any words of wisdom on Ann Arbor??? Considering I have done about 0% research on this area (simply bc I NEVER expected the admissions letter!)

Hi y'all,

Anyone deciding between Berkeley MPH-HPM, Hopkins MBA/MPH, and Harvard MPH 65- Health Management?

Let's talk about it.

Thanks. I've written an email to Helpdesk. Hope to unlock it as soon as possible.

UTH is a good school. I would definitely go there if Hopkins was not in my list. I prefer UTH over GWU, Tulane, UAB, T A&M, BU and, Yale (other schools in my list)

Wait, haven't you already accepted your admissions offer from Hopkins? Or am I thinking of someone else?
Yes, You are right. I have already accepted my Hopkins offer by paying $600. UTH is my first backup school and I am also processing their admission procedure. So that if anything goes wrong with Hopkins, I can go there.

It's a college town, through and through. COL may seem high (many educated families, lots of University faculty/staff who live there have the $ to influence the area) and certainly you can spend a lot of money if you would like, but you're not the first student to move there. Living like a student isn't hard there. There is a huge number of undergraduates, so there are plenty of businesses and resources primarily for students.

Find a place with reasonable rent (possibly with roommates), figure out grocery store access and your route to the public health building, and you'll be fine. Even in the winter, a couple miles is rarely a problem. It's a very safe city with a bike-friendly and walkable campus/downtown. Combining the MCard (free fare for the public buses) and the UM buses makes things pretty accessible.

Focus on fit! You can always move to Colorado (including summer opportunities). Can you reach your goals at one program better than the other? Did you visit both places? Can you leverage with Colorado if you didn't get any scholarships from them?

Funnily enough, my 'expensive' school is also Colorado. I'm also thinking about going on for a PhD or MD. It's definitely a personal decision, but I've pretty much accepted my debt load and would rather go to the school I love instead of compromising because of cost. So, Colorado it is 🙂

Also, I'm glad you mentioned Colorado's aid release day, I've been wondering about that and I was going to email/call and find out.

Are you going to the visit day in April?

Hi, I'm considering going to UM and I've found that a lot of living arrangements in Ann Arbor are still a 15-20 minute walk from SPH. Whereas it's much cheaper to live in Ypsilanti and have a 15 minute drive to campus. As someone who would have to get used to the Michigan winters (I'm from NJ), I would prefer driving in a warm car for 15 minutes than walking and being cold. You should look into Ypsi housing. I've found two other girls on Craigslist who I'll potentially be sharing a house with and the rent is cheap--like $350-400 per month.

I did my undergrad at Michigan and very much enjoyed my time in Ann Arbor. Although the winters can be a bit intense, I never felt like it was too cold to walk to classes or nearby areas. Yes, the housing is a bit pricey, but you can definitely find more moderately-priced areas in Kerrytown, south campus, by the medical center or up by north campus. Housing around the medical center will be closest to the School of Public Health. The University's and city's bus systems are very frequent and reliable as well. Besides housing, the cost of living is moderately priced and never struck me as overpriced. All in all, I loved Ann Arbor and would highly recommend living there.

Has anyone heard from Vanderbilt? Also did anyone apply to Carnegie Melon?
I heard from Vanderbilt Feb 1 (verified Dec 15). The admissions office has been very responsive to my emails - if you haven't heard yet I'd just send a note to ask.

Congratulations to all of you badasses! I am still waiting to hear from just Harvard-45 Credit MPH. Agonizing. However, I submitted pretty close to the due date, so, no surprise there.

Hang in there to all still waiting!

For those of you still waiting on UNC Health Behavior: this week will be the week! I called this morning to ask when decisions would be rolled out, and the student services manager said they were finishing up.

Congratulations to everyone on their incredible achievements and acceptances! So excited for all that we are going to accomplish. I can't believe I even have this option, but I'm having a hard time choosing between Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Columbia and Yale. My aim is to work with an organization like the WHO and in global and maternal/child health. Does anyone have any insight into which of these schools would give my the best connections and opportunities based on my interests?

Can anyone comment on how the Johns Hopkins MSPH in International Health- Global Disease Epidemiology and Control (GDEC) program compares to an MPH in Epidemiology at other institutions? Do people still consider the MSPH in International Health with a concentration in GDEC to be a degree in Epidemiology?

Oh my gosh THANK YOU. I just want to be put out of my misery.

I feel your pain SO MUCH. Did your post say you were verified at the end of November? If so, you've been waiting longer than me, and the wait has been unbearable.

Do you guys think they will give scholarship notifications along with the acceptance letters? I too just want to be put out of my misery lol, but UMich has given me a 50% scholarship so if I magically were accepted to UNC I'd want to know about scholarships sooner rather than later.
I just want to know where I'm going, ugh.

I was told that UNC announces their financial aid when the state releases their budget around April. Even then, they do not have drastic fin aid packages because their tuition is already one of the lowest.

That's awesome! There are a lot of great faculty in that department What are you choosing between?
I'm between Hopkins and UNC. I'm having a hard time deciding already! You can't go wrong with either but I'm not sure Bloomberg is worth the debt.
