MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just accepted to hopkins for the MSPH in international health - social and behavioral sciences. Logged into the applicant portal on a whim and there was the unofficial letter! Thought I'd let people know since it doesn't look like anyone had posted a MSPH decision yet! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! SO HAPPY WOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!

Congrats! When did you apply?

So much has happened since my last time on this forum, big congrats to all of the recent acceptances!

Last week I visited both UNC and Michigan for their respective visit days. Both were amazing schools with lovely surrounding cities. If there are any specific questions that any of you have about either visit I'd be happy to answer them on here or private message.

I think I just sent you a message! 🙂

Yeah, congratulations to all the recent acceptances! Seeing everyone in this thread get accepted is super cool! You guys are going to do great!! It also gives me hope that I'll hear something soon! :highfive:

Which schools are you waiting to hear from?

Hey guys! Would love some advice if you've got it.

Berkeley's admitted student day is early next month and I'd love to go, but I think that I could only feasibly attend either Berkeley's day or Washington's day, due to taking time off work/cost of travel. However, I haven't heard a peep from UW (being fully aware that this makes sense, since it's still early in admissions season).

Do you think it would be unreasonable of me to write to UW and explain to them that I'm hoping to go west for an admitted day but am trying to make an educated decision about which to go to and ask when theirs is (and, perhaps, even find out about my admission status)? Is this too presumptuous? Do I just need to suck it up?

Any insight would be appreciated! Feel free to tell me I'm being ridiculous.

I tried to do something similar with UNC about requesting a visit before being officially invited and they politely declined. I expect UW will do the same.

Which schools are you waiting to hear from?

For right now, just Emory, since a few other schools' have later deadlines (which I'll be sending those out soon) and financial reasons prevents me from applying to every single place immediately so I have/still planned to space them out. I'm assuming I haven't heard anything from Emory since I got my stuff in late (I was verified early January, but they just sent my app onward like two weeks ago, more than likely due to my late GRE scores). I applied to BSHE, but I'm assuming I may have to wait until March or something. It is discouraging on my end a bit since Emory is my top choice and I'm already super hard on myself in general, haha. I'm still being patient though and hoping for the best until then.

For your later schools, definitely inquire if they accept fee waivers for the application. Thanks to a little bit of planning and generosity on their part, I was able to get my application submitted for free at University of Michigan and Washington. SOPHAS also allowed me one free application which I used on Columbia.

Best of luck!

After you applied to Oregon through SOPHAS, did they email you asking you to complete an supplemental application through their Graduate Toolkit Portal?
Hmmm no. Maybe depending on the concentration (& corresponding school), it varies? *hopefully*

I didn't apply to BSHE, but this information might still be of interest to you. My application was forwarded to my first choice (GLEPI) on 1/28, received an unfavorable decision and was forwarded to 2nd choice on 2/1, and I was then accepted to global health (second choice) on 2/4. Hopefully you have a quick turn around time as well! Good luck!

I actually have a question for you, if you don't mind 😉 Why did you decide to not pursue your MPH at Berkeley?
Congrats on Berkeley - I remember watching a YouTube lecture of a class at UCB which completely sold me to the program. Ultimately, however, I didn't apply to the school because (i) I'm an international student and funding is limited for international students (ii) Only 2-4% of the public health cohort is international (read this on their website), so I assumed the curriculum would be quite US-centric, which is great if I lived there, but I figured that I would be able to learn more in a school which has a higher proportion of international students, so that the connections and curriculum can be applied to jobs outside the US too (I have no idea if this is true or not, but that was my reasoning at the time) (iii) I had a self-imposed quota on the number of schools I wanted to apply to, so I gave it a miss.

Nonetheless, there are loads of online resources from the SPH at Berkeley and they are all really, really great! Congrats!

I think there's no harm in asking when their admit day is. However, before asking about your admission status, look at the school's website / email they sent you to see the timeline they gave you for admissions outcomes to be released first. If their decisions are due in the next week or so, no harm in asking what the status is. If they promised to inform you of the outcome in March or something, it may be too early to ask, so I would avoid jumping the gun!

I just got an email acceptance to Boston University...did anyone else hear about merit scholarships in the email or is that information in the "formal acceptance package" that I will receive in the mail next week?

Congrats! May I ask when your application went under review? I'm still waiting on BU.

You'll receive the merit scholarship in the physical letter next week.

Yesterday, I looked up the median rent for both of those cities and just went :whoa:
Yeah, rent in Atlanta is cheaper near Emory compared to Boston or D.C. But a very northern girl in the South? I am curious about that transition, weather and otherwise...D.C. seems like a happy compromise between Vermont and Georgia, weather and otherwise, if I can make it affordable!

If only the CDC had another large branch in Boston other than quarantine facilities...

You still have Brown and Yale as northern backups! Given your research interest though, it looks like Emory might be the place for you.

Hey! Not sure if you have figured this out yet, already, but something to consider is that some of the MPH programs at UW require in-person interviews if you are selected as a likely candidate. Not sure if it is all departments. If they are interested in you, they may help with your expenses, although that doesn't really help with work. I actually just had an interview at UW (which I found out about last minute), but wish I could have worked in visiting Berkeley as well. Problem is I won't be able to attend the dates for Berkeley due to timing with another school visit!

I would suggest contacting UW and finding out their process so that you can plan! Good luck!

Hey don't know if this will help either but here is my timeline. I applied 12/31, got an email for OPUS 1/8, BSHE received my app 1/15. They got my GRE scores 1/19 since I sent a more recent score. I found out today 2/10 that I got in. Don't worry, you will be next! 🙂

I'm pretty sure it's just certain programs. PSU doesn't have it's own portal. I'm at the school of Community Health for my undergrad right now, so I'm sure of that. I can't speak to the programs at OHSU, though.

I got an unfavorable decision from GLEPI on 2/1 but haven't heard from them about sending my application to my second choice yet! Should I contact them? Also congrats!! You give me hope I'll get a better decision for my second choice!

Check the email stating the unfavorable decision for GLEPI. That is how I was informed that my app was under review in my second choice department. If it is not included in the email, I would definitely contact them and inquire about the status of your app. What was your second choice?

Thank you so much! Hoping the best for you!

You have great stats! All the best 🙂

Does anyone have an idea what Admitted Student Day events are usually like? Are they full-day and really structured or more like open events where you can walk around campus yourself after checking in at the school? I'm planning to go to UCLA and Berkeley (and work remotely the week in between) and am curious as to what it will be like!

The real question I have about UMich... even with 1 year out of state and 1 year of in state... how does one finance 60k in tuition!?!? Did they speak about any assistantships/etc??

Yesterday, I looked up the median rent for both of those cities and just went :whoa:
I was born in NY and grew up in Atl and I can speak on behalf of the culture in GA. Atl is very progressive and is seeing tremendous growth/change in terms of cultural diversity and urban living. It is incredibly CHEAP to live in ATL (which makes up for the obscene tuition at Emory). The local food movement is great, there is ALWAYS something going on and the young professional population is BOOMING... not to mention all the public health nonprofits/etc that are headquartered there! I would have applied to Emory in a second if I could afford it... bc ATL is really not bad at all! I would seriously consider it!

I tried to do something similar with UNC about requesting a visit before being officially invited and they politely declined. I expect UW will do the same.
You're wise! I emailed and they sent me info about the visit dates, nothing about admission status. Ah well, was worth a shot!

Thanks! They never specified, so I figured it wouldn't be harmful. Of course, I knew going in that it would be rather surprising if they had an answer for me. 😉

Was just admitted to UC Berkeley for Epidemiology/Biostatistics! 13k in-state tuition, I'm sold.

Congratulations! The tuition is a big draw for me as well - I just wish it were $13K per year and not semester 🙂 Plus, I think rates will probably go up a bit over the next few years, but still, amazing price compared to a lot of schools.

Hello! I figured I should chime in since I am a constant forum-refresher. I'm applying into JD/MPH dual degree programs for fall 2016.

Undergrad School: William and Mary
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.3/3.5
Major/Minor: Philosophy
GradGPA
(if applicable): 3.9 (post-bacc)
Grad Studies (if applicable): Post-bacc Paralegal certificate from Georgetown
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Gre 10/15 V: 163, Q: 156, W: 5.5
Experience/Research (please, be brief): I have worked for 3 years as a paralegal at a medical malpractice firm

Interested in: Health Policy and Advocacy
Applied: UVA, WUSTL (radio silence), BU (only eligible if accepted to JD program- complete 1/6), Michigan (virtual interview on Monday), and Emory **(I was told to wait until after 1L to apply to UNC and OSU)
Accepted: UVA (generalist? just got an email telling me I was in), Emory (health policy and management)
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

Has anyone heard from WUSTL for Health Policy Analysis? I got an email about fellowships today, but that seems to have gone to everyone..

Has any out out there heard back from harvard for a program other than epi? I applied to the 65-credit mph. It seems like the epi programs sent out their decisions earlier so the timing isn't reflective of the sph at large....

Just heard back from Yale, I'm accepted to the chronic disease epidemiology program! I'm so surprised they were able to overlook my failed organic chemistry grade from university
But honestly it's pretty expensive and not a top ranked program so I most likely won't attend unless I get some substantial funding. I was verified on Jan 8th for anyone wondering.

I received the email too but if you read it says, "As an admitted student, you have the opportunity to apply..." Interesting choice of words. I'm surprised to see so few people have been accepted to WUSTL at this point. Maybe they have changed their admissions process.

The real question I have about UMich... even with 1 year out of state and 1 year of in state... how does one finance 60k in tuition!?!? Did they speak about any assistantships/etc??

Loans, loans, loans :dead:.

Just heard back from Drexel saying I was accepted with a Dean's scholarship of $10,700. I wasn't expecting a decision so soon since I literally sent in my completed app like just over 3 weeks ago and never got a "we received your application" email, but I'm not complaining!

Now only if Columbia would hurry up and ease our anxiety...

I just got an email from JHU that my application is under review and they wanted to speak with me further about my application. It will be an interview for Johns Hopkins MSPH in health policy. Has anyone done an interview with them yet? And if so, could you offer any advice on what types of questions I should prepare for. Thanks so much!

This is one of the reasons I left CA. I still can't believe it cost me more to stay in state than it did to go out of state. Given the amount I'm paying in rent right now, it would have cost me more to go to a UC despite spending $1,500 more in tuition per semester. I love having roommates.

Oh god, how nerve wracking. I've applied to the same program and I'm waiting to see if I'll hear from them too! I spoke with Christine King a few months back regarding the interview and she said that she will contact us around this time. It sounds more like a conversation rather than an interview, she said she would be calling to learn more about what we are interested in and going over our application!

Good luck!! And congrats on hearing from her, I'm sure it's a good sign

Columbia's Admitted Students Day last year consisted of a welcome event where the dean, the director of admissions, and the director of financial aid present. Lunch was provided, and we got to sit with current students and professors over their honest thoughts about the school and the program. There were more talks after lunch about what makes Columbia unique with a session devoted for questions. We had a few optional events after the whole schedule was finished. I hope this helps even though I didn't apply to UCLA or Berkeley last year!

Just emailed Yale's admissions office and discovered I was admitted on January 28th! Apparently they're having problems with their server, in case anyone else feels like they've been waiting too long. (I'm already at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (F&ES) at Yale, which is why I only applied to Yale SPH. They have a three-year joint degree with F&ES.)

What program did you get in to?

For people waiting on Michigan, try checking Wolverine access. Mine updated to show an acceptance around 10 am today. Health Behavior/Health Ed program, application verified 12/17. No e-mail or other communication though.
First and foremost, congrats!
But geez!! I applied 12/17 as well and still nothing... This is painful!
In wolverine access, did you find it on the "Admission Application Status" screen? Did you have to click any buttons like "View Credentials" or "View Application Data"?
