For those waiting to hear from Brown MPH: I contacted the admissions office and they told me that decisions would be released this week. Apparently the reason for the delay is that 2 deans at the grad school have to review apps after the admissions committee. The second of the two deans is now looking over the apps. Here's to hoping we hear back in the next couple of days!!

I'm gonna caution against using this as a barometer for measuring a school. Columbia is a massive gentrifying force in Harlem (as are schools like Hopkins, Penn, Yale, etc...the list could go on), and I must say, if we're in the interests of the public's health and decide to go to elite institutions that are in low-income neighborhoods (again, the schools choose those neighborhoods), then it's important not to paint the communities as "the problem." I understand a desire for safety, but also understand the neighborhood's hostility toward gentrifying forces and those who attend those institutions. Just my $0.02.

Thank you for your tasteful response. I'm not excusing what happened to that individual, but at the same time, I agree with your sentiment. Also just my two cents.

Hello. I just wanted to warn everyone about Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Some of the professors are great, but the facilities leave much to be desired. If you want to enroll in the school, you should definitely visit and note the surrounding area. It is full of crime and drug deals. During the day, it is mostly fine. However, if you are going to have evening classes, PLEASE make sure you don't have to walk any further than the closest subway station. Last night, I was walking back to the GWB bus terminal with my classmate after evening class ending at 8:20pm and was verbally assaulted. A black woman who was quite intoxicated, holding a large liquor bottle, trying to get on a bike, screamed at us as we walked by, "GET OFF MY BLOCK WHITEYS!!" I started walking faster, as I was scared of getting a liquor bottle thrown at my head. I've emailed the school but no one cares. If you can go to school in a better area, please do. It's not worth it.

Sorry you went through this. Not only can this happen anywhere, but it's NYC. I was born and raised in the city; if city living is not for you, do not live there.

I wouldn't expect the school to do anything, either.

However, having a problem with gentrification does not excuse someone's actions. I was verbally assaulted, and it was a bias crime. Just because I am white does not excuse racism. How is that an "outdated" view? Explain that to me. Because I'm white, it's excusable?! What if I was black, and called the N word?
I also lived in NYC in a different area where I never had a problem. This area, however, is already feeling unsafe to me and it's only my second semester.

Agreed. And no offense to the original poster, but you can't expect to be insulated from real world problems even though you attend an elite institution. I also think it's troublesome that you say you've "had no problems with any Hispanic people," as if the difference in the racial makeup between two low-income neighborhoods is some sort of indicator for a difference in behaviors. Didn't mean to make this political or start some sort of internet feud, but as an Asian American who's all too familiar with the concept of the model minority (myth), I'd suggest you think twice about making broad statements about a group of minority people.

Okay, I apologize for calling your views outdated, that was inappropriate. I completely understand why you felt unsafe and felt a need to warn others. However, I hope you decide to use this opportunity to do more research into gentrification and the general framework we tried to present to you (i.e. social and historical factors that lead to inequities and create "unsafe" neighborhoods). I'm sure that Columbia may have some courses that delve into these subjects.

It would also be great if some forum members interested in alcohol and addiction studies could give you another framework with which to analyze this situation. Good luck with the rest of your time at Columbia. I hope you use this opportunity to learn more about these issues and don't assume that all those who look like this woman will behave the same way.

I figured it was a long shot, so I'll be taking some time off getting more experience and redoing my GRE before going back and applying again.

I'd suggest that everyone maybe have some compassion towards someone who was verbally assaulted/made to feel unsafe. That is what this is really about. "Insulated from real world problems?" As if it's my fault that someone said something racially charged to me. Right….I'm not blaming Columbia for something a drunk woman said to me, but if the only reason I'm in a situation like that is because I was leaving class, then the school should be concerned. They responded to me and again, I do not blame Columbia for what happened in any way. I am just saying, make sure before you enroll in a school that you'll feel okay in the surrounding environment. I do not, it causes me anxiety, and am considering dropping out of the program. Not everyone is the same and I don't need to be attacked on a forum because of how I feel after an incident. I'm giving some advice that maybe some people can take into account.

Personally singled out? That doesn't even make sense to me. If something happens to you, it's personal. It's common logic. Of course people experience racial injustice, but you are bringing up a topic that is outside of what my advice was---to just be careful in where you choose to go to school. Maybe for some reason my original post is hitting a nerve with people who are minorities on this forum? But it really angers me that there is racism against whites and people just choose to downplay it. Public health includes ALL RACES.

I don't believe so, I have not seen any mention of UNC scholarships on this thread. If I were in your shoes, I definitely would be tempted to just say yes to Emory/Michigan based on their offers.

I am in the HPM track, the initial Mission Award scholarship was sent out to me on February 24th. Hopefully yours arrives soon!

I'm in SMS, not HPM, but I haven't received my financial aid yet either. I was told it would come sometime in March. I know they're holding financial aid virtual chat sessions so maybe you can ask at one of those. They said they had strict criteria for scholarships though, and I didn't meet any of them 🙁

On a somewhat separate note, I applied for a dual degree at Tufts and heard back today that I got a $17k scholarship for the other half of the dual! (not the MPH side) So I guess it balances out lol, but I would've much preferred if it came from Columbia.

I feel your pain. I'm still waiting for a decision from UNC (was told they were supposed to be finishing making decisions today) and while I'm pretty convinced this late in the game it's bound to be a rejection, I just wish they'd hurry up and put me out of my misery.

The total tuition is $65k for the entire program, not factoring in cost of living in DC, fees, etc.

Congrats! I apologise if you already mentioned this before, but what department did you apply for in U of M? I'm kind of anxiously waiting for scholarship news on U of M's Community Health Promotion.
