MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those waiting to hear from Brown MPH: I contacted the admissions office and they told me that decisions would be released this week. Apparently the reason for the delay is that 2 deans at the grad school have to review apps after the admissions committee. The second of the two deans is now looking over the apps. Here's to hoping we hear back in the next couple of days!!
YAAAAAAS THANKS

I'm gonna caution against using this as a barometer for measuring a school. Columbia is a massive gentrifying force in Harlem (as are schools like Hopkins, Penn, Yale, etc...the list could go on), and I must say, if we're in the interests of the public's health and decide to go to elite institutions that are in low-income neighborhoods (again, the schools choose those neighborhoods), then it's important not to paint the communities as "the problem." I understand a desire for safety, but also understand the neighborhood's hostility toward gentrifying forces and those who attend those institutions. Just my $0.02.
Thank you for your tasteful response. I'm not excusing what happened to that individual, but at the same time, I agree with your sentiment. Also just my two cents.

Hello. I just wanted to warn everyone about Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Some of the professors are great, but the facilities leave much to be desired. If you want to enroll in the school, you should definitely visit and note the surrounding area. It is full of crime and drug deals. During the day, it is mostly fine. However, if you are going to have evening classes, PLEASE make sure you don't have to walk any further than the closest subway station. Last night, I was walking back to the GWB bus terminal with my classmate after evening class ending at 8:20pm and was verbally assaulted. A black woman who was quite intoxicated, holding a large liquor bottle, trying to get on a bike, screamed at us as we walked by, "GET OFF MY BLOCK WHITEYS!!" I started walking faster, as I was scared of getting a liquor bottle thrown at my head. I've emailed the school but no one cares. If you can go to school in a better area, please do. It's not worth it.
Sorry you went through this. Not only can this happen anywhere, but it's NYC. I was born and raised in the city; if city living is not for you, do not live there.

I wouldn't expect the school to do anything, either.

I commute into the city, I do not live there for a reason. I wanted to go to Columbia for the education. RunninThruThe6, Columbia's public health school is not in Harlem first of all. The main campus is. Washington Heights is actually predominantly Dominican, and I have had no problems with any Hispanic people. However, having a problem with gentrification does not excuse someone's actions. I was verbally assaulted, and it was a bias crime. Just because I am white does not excuse racism. How is that an "outdated" view? Explain that to me. Because I'm white, it's excusable?! What if I was black, and called the N word?
I also lived in NYC in a different area where I never had a problem. This area, however, is already feeling unsafe to me and it's only my second semester.

No one is trying to "excuse" that woman's actions. We are just trying to provide you with a framework with which to better evaluate this situation. No need to become defensive.

Not sure why you're equating "whitey" to the N-word

Ugh .....just realized that because I didn't submit my GWU application before Dec 15, I'm not eligible for a scholarship.

Could someone tell me PLEASE that I'm reading those rules wrongly?

Not sure why you're equating "whitey" to the N-word
I was not equating it per se, just trying to give a similar context. Maybe if you were upset by a situation you'd get defensive, too. It's always easier from an outside perspective. I understand the framework that a couple of you were trying to provide, but feel the need to justify myself when I'm told my views are "outdated."

Columbia school of public health is in Spanish Harlem, actually.

Sincerely, a Puerto Rican
Spanish Harlem, is a neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, New York City roughly encompassing the area north of the Upper East Side and East 96th Street up to about the 140s, east of Fifth Avenue to the East and Harlem Rivers. <--thanks Google. It is NOT in Spanish Harlem. Not sure why even facts I'm stating are being attacked. Thanks, forum!

Agreed. And no offense to the original poster, but you can't expect to be insulated from real world problems even though you attend an elite institution. I also think it's troublesome that you say you've "had no problems with any Hispanic people," as if the difference in the racial makeup between two low-income neighborhoods is some sort of indicator for a difference in behaviors. Didn't mean to make this political or start some sort of internet feud, but as an Asian American who's all too familiar with the concept of the model minority (myth), I'd suggest you think twice about making broad statements about a group of minority people.

Okay, I apologize for calling your views outdated, that was inappropriate. I completely understand why you felt unsafe and felt a need to warn others. However, I hope you decide to use this opportunity to do more research into gentrification and the general framework we tried to present to you (i.e. social and historical factors that lead to inequities and create "unsafe" neighborhoods). I'm sure that Columbia may have some courses that delve into these subjects.

It would also be great if some forum members interested in alcohol and addiction studies could give you another framework with which to analyze this situation. Good luck with the rest of your time at Columbia. I hope you use this opportunity to learn more about these issues and don't assume that all those who look like this woman will behave the same way.

*Generalizes ethnicity\ies*
*Tells a Puerto Rican where Dominicans and Puerto Ricans live*
*Surprised by backlash*

Drunk women who say nasty things exist worldwide. Don't blame the school you attend. Enjoy the fact that you are enrolled in an Ivy League and attempt to reap the rewards!

Okay, my bad. Spanish Harlem is actually across the street.

Unfortunately, I think Dec 15 is the scholarship deadline.

Hey everyone. So the two schools I was crossing my fingers for, Yale and Columbia, rejected my application (just heard back from Columbia right now).
I figured it was a long shot, so I'll be taking some time off getting more experience and redoing my GRE before going back and applying again.

Good luck to everyone with decisions, scholarships, and grad school. I'll be there one of these years 🙂

(and no I'm not sitting in a cafe crying my eyes out or anything. i'm totally taking this like a boss)

I'd suggest that everyone maybe have some compassion towards someone who was verbally assaulted/made to feel unsafe. That is what this is really about. "Insulated from real world problems?" As if it's my fault that someone said something racially charged to me. Right….I'm not blaming Columbia for something a drunk woman said to me, but if the only reason I'm in a situation like that is because I was leaving class, then the school should be concerned. They responded to me and again, I do not blame Columbia for what happened in any way. I am just saying, make sure before you enroll in a school that you'll feel okay in the surrounding environment. I do not, it causes me anxiety, and am considering dropping out of the program. Not everyone is the same and I don't need to be attacked on a forum because of how I feel after an incident. I'm giving some advice that maybe some people can take into account.

Also, The Mailman School of Public Health is located on the Columbia University Medical Center Campus in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan - See more at: https://www.mailman.columbia.edu/contact/maps-and-directions#sthash.PjHCt0pF.dpuf

I don't understand how I am wrong in correcting someone about where the school is located. It is in Washington Heights, not Spanish Harlem. For crying out loud, what does it matter that I was correcting someone who is Puerto Rican? Am I crazy????

^ You can refer to my previous post, in which I (along with several other posters), acknowledged that what you went through was terrible. Nobody ever said it was your fault or that you deserved it. But for God's sake, if you yourself can't even acknowledge that there are deeper societal problems that go beyond your own personal experience, that you feel like you are personally being singled out even though some people experience racial injustice EVERY single day, then you should really think long and hard about why you are even in this field.

Back to work, folks!

Personally singled out? That doesn't even make sense to me. If something happens to you, it's personal. It's common logic. Of course people experience racial injustice, but you are bringing up a topic that is outside of what my advice was---to just be careful in where you choose to go to school. Maybe for some reason my original post is hitting a nerve with people who are minorities on this forum? But it really angers me that there is racism against whites and people just choose to downplay it. Public health includes ALL RACES.

Has anyone interviewed with Dartmouth (MPH)? What kind of questions do they ask and how did it go?

I'm sorry to hear that latinhealthchick. 🙁 Regardless of this situation, you still are a good candidate and valued contributor to the forum.

I had a lot of help during this application process and in turn, I may be able to offer some good advice for the next time you decide to apply. Feel free to message me!

Thanks for the support. I really appreciate it and will definitely reach out when the time comes to apply again. Good luck with your education decisions! I'm so excited for all of you!

Oh goodness, Columbia keeps giving me reasons to reconsider. They just called to tell me that I qualify for an additional $10k in scholarship, for a total of $30k.

Berkeley and UW are still radio silent about financial aid. Decisions, decisions!

Another scholarship buddy! Congratulations! 😀

I'm really, really hoping to move to the West coast, but I do have to follow the money to some extent. We'll see. 🙂 What are you thinking lately?

Feel free to message me too. I'll probably be here at least until I graduate.

Has anyone gotten any scholarship information from Colorado? Or know when we might hear?

Looks like you and I are going to be switching coasts! 😛

Besides the Columbia scholarship, GW also gave me a generous 20k scholarship. I wish I could broker some sort of NASCAR-style deal with Boston, Columbia, and GW where they would give me the offered aid in return for me wearing a business suit with their logos.

I have my fingers crossed for some sort of aid from UMich and UNC. A lot of students on this forum have received the Dean's Scholarship, I wouldn't mind getting one of those!

Doesn't seem like many applied to U of Arizona, but if it helps anyone, I heard back from them today via e-mail!

To those who received scholarship at BU, how did they notify you? I received an acceptance via mail, but it was only a page letter with the admissions decision. Also, I can't log into their application gateway with either of my browsers...

Congrats on your amazing scholarship offers. I am also waiting to hear about financial aid from UNC. Do you know if they have sent any scholarship offers yet? Time to decide is getting shorter and I would love to know all my options already.

Congrats on the scholarships to you folks!!

On that note--has anyone who applied to Columbia's HPM track heard back about scholarships/financial aid packages? It seems like many people in other tracks at Columbia have heard something regarding scholarships, but I have yet to see (or receive any email myself about) admitted HPM students and financial aid packages. 🙁

@Pudu2009 definitely deserves recognition for being one of the most supportive member on this thread. There are so many instances of her providing super helpful posts which avoided the same common questions being posted and when inevitably they were posted again, having the patience to deal with them again! :claps:

I don't believe so, I have not seen any mention of UNC scholarships on this thread. If I were in your shoes, I definitely would be tempted to just say yes to Emory/Michigan based on their offers.

I am in the HPM track, the initial Mission Award scholarship was sent out to me on February 24th. Hopefully yours arrives soon!

I'm in SMS, not HPM, but I haven't received my financial aid yet either. I was told it would come sometime in March. I know they're holding financial aid virtual chat sessions so maybe you can ask at one of those. They said they had strict criteria for scholarships though, and I didn't meet any of them 🙁

On a somewhat separate note, I applied for a dual degree at Tufts and heard back today that I got a $17k scholarship for the other half of the dual! (not the MPH side) So I guess it balances out lol, but I would've much preferred if it came from Columbia.

I am still waiting for admissions decision for Columbia's HPM I'm losing hope and it's my top choice!

I feel your pain. I'm still waiting for a decision from UNC (was told they were supposed to be finishing making decisions today) and while I'm pretty convinced this late in the game it's bound to be a rejection, I just wish they'd hurry up and put me out of my misery.

I heard from GW yesterday, was offered 20k scholarship. But from what I understand that's only about a quarter of tuition costs, correct? Has anybody crunched some numbers for this school yet?

The total tuition is $65k for the entire program, not factoring in cost of living in DC, fees, etc.

Congrats on the scholarship!!

Totally agree, we just need an answer...but let's remain hopeful waiting for an acceptance letter! 😀

Just got an email from Minnesota with an $8,000 Dean's Scholar Award and a non-resident tuition waiver (worth ~12,000) !
Congrats! I apologise if you already mentioned this before, but what department did you apply for in U of M? I'm kind of anxiously waiting for scholarship news on U of M's Community Health Promotion.
