Was contemplating between Emory (BSHE) and Columbia (PopAndFamHealth), literally going crazy. But I just got a notification that I got the MCH fellowship at Emory!!! I'm SOLD on Emory. Sorry Columbia, your COA is too high!:clap::banana:

I should probably accept my offer first. I have been on ICU for the past four weeks and completely forgot about it. Hehe. Good thing I still have three more weeks.
 
Just got my financial aid package from UW! Loans, loans, loans, but I was expecting that. The good news is that they've offered me enough aid to cover school itself and then some, something that no other school has done so far (to be fair, UW is also my cheapest option).

I head there tomorrow for the COPHP Visit Day. I have a gut feeling UW is going to be the place for me—I just need to confirm it! 🙂

I know! My visit day forecast is high of 69, sun and 0% precipitation. How'd I get so lucky?!

Also, how did you like it? Was it for an official visit day or just on your own time?
 
any tips on negotiating finances? With my UM deans scholarship, it brings the cost to about the same as Colorado. UM in ranked #4 in the country and offered me money- CO has offered me nothing.

Idea/tips/suggestions?

It was just for fun since I can't come this week. I loved it!!! The campus is so large and each building really has its own unique architecture. The H wing is right near the water! I mostly explored downtown and all the touristy attractions though.

I was debating between the two for a long time (and Columbia) and recently came to a conclusion! If you want to PM me I'd be happy to explain my thoughts 🙂
 
Just received a scholarship from Emory for $8000 over two years :/ quite disappointing! I know I should be happy for any amount but really that amount doesn't make any sort of dent in the cost.
Well, makes my final choice a lot easier to make!
 
just declined columbia's mph in epi, hope it opens up room for another one of you!

Hey! Which dual degree at Tufts are you in for? I was accepted to the MPH/MA in urban planning. I feel like I've completely ignored Tufts in my decision making =/ Most of their events have been scheduled pretty late in the game-- their first open house is this Thursday in Boston.

hey! i was too until i visited if it makes you feel any better! i got into the mph/ms in nutrition communications. the program is really cool but after seeing all the things BU and bigger public health schools have to offer, it's a tough call! where are you deciding between?

I definitely am! I am flying coast to coast next week to visit my top 3. Im pretty sure Ive narrowed it down to UM vs. Colorado (visiting Oregon just in case + VooDoo donuts...) ... but I am trying to negotiate with Colorado for some financial assistance since UM offered me so much and the two programs will cost the same now....

I hope the visit helps and/or CO can come back with some help! Have you visited UM?

I am legitimately agonizing. I thought I wanted to go to Georgetown for biohazards threat agents/emerging infectious diseases, but that degree isn't as broad as I need to get a decent job right after the year-long program. So now I'm back to Boston University/Harvard/Emory/GW for environmental health. They are all coming in on the pricey side, and at the moment I'm leaning towards BU in terms of finances...I have no idea.

I've heard really good things about their nutrition program (I think it's one of few in the country!) But I agree, it's also a very small program compared to places like BU. I'm local so I've seen both schools and I love BU. I'm mainly deciding between BU and Columbia right now. I'm definitely feeling the pressure now that decision day is about 2 weeks away 😕 which school are you leaning towards?
 
I am also still agonizing, mostly between Emory and UNC. Cannot decide if I more want the Environmental Science degree with a focus on public health, or the Environmental Health/EPI degree. I felt that Emory was a perfect match in many ways, but the degrees are not exactly the same, so I would come out with different skills. Also more debt from Emory.
 
Does anyone attending Visit Emory this Thursday want to meet up at the reception/Convos on Tap (or earlier)? I'm excited to meet everyone!
 
Anyone who went to BU admitted student day--did they discuss how to find jobs in the fall/how easy it will be to find jobs? I am starting to lose it a bit over the thought of all of the loans and feel like I should find a job now, but I have a feeling the job search mainly happens later in the summer.

@moonwave89 i'm leaning towards michigan but it's a tough call! BU seems stellar in terms of career services for anyone who's wondering. their 92% job placement rate might be slightly lower than other schools but i really think they are a rapidly growing/improving school and will do everything in their power to help you.

i went to their small group visit a couple weeks ago and i was blown away by the fact that they have 8 career counselors! every other school i've talked to has at most 3. BU also has built into their curriculum a professional development requirement and i got the sense that it's super career-oriented. i think if you want to go into research you might be better at a big research school to get your feet wet.

as far as jobs while at BU they seem really connected and told me straight up that students don't have a hard time finding work while in school since boston has so much to offer. they also have a jobs database you have access to once you're enrolled. you should try to talk to current students though to get a better sense of that, but most students there don't work more than 15 or so hours a week.

@Bd01323 you musttt go to voodoo! a portlander told me that the whole business idea was conceived when the two owners were high and floating on a raft. not sure if it's true, but if you have that in mind, then the whole concept makes perfect sense.

i did visit michigan though not on admitted students day. i loved it but i think it really depends on your preference! i would guess that if you're a fan of oregon and colorado then you'll probably like michigan. do you have any particular questions?

for everyone else---i've been talking to a lot of mph current students and the big things they told me to ask yourself as you make your decision:
-what are the top 3 things you want out of a program and does theschool offer that?
-what skills are you hoping to obtain from the degree?
-will the network you cultivate there move you toward your career goals?
-does the surrounding area match with your lifestyle needs?

Yes they did! BU's Career Services seems like it has quite a bit of resources available for its students. Almost all of the current students who gave their perspectives stated that they were at least working part-time or full-time along with classes. BU even has a specific career website designated for its students which has connections to many local employers and jobs that reserve spaces specifically for BU students. They consistently mentioned their "Open Door" policy as well, encouraging students to stop by any faculty members' offices if they needed help finding a research or work position.

Once you commit (if you decide to go), you'll be able to gain access to that website and other resources with your BU login information.

I had the best grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup at the food carts downtown too! Also shopping cause no sales tax haha

I got accepted to MPH Epi!! I am in the same dilemma, I also went to the admissions office to know more about the program. This is what I got to know if you are interested:
There are no internships or field work in Epi and health management and policy, class size of Epi is around 30-40
Epi is more focused on thesis work and classes will be held from 5 to 6.30 then 6.30 to 8. There are faculty members who are involved in research so you can ask them if they allow you to work with them, rest faculty will guide you in research paper.
As my course is for Epi , so I have no idea for global health but they did say that there are internships and field work for other courses.
If this helps you to decide, I also wanted to go abroad through WHO or UNICEF but have doubts for NYU. If anyone can guide us if the school matter to get into health organizations or is it our experiences which matter? Because I am more likely to go into Rutgers because their fees is half of NYU.

i can't decide between MHS Epi - Clinical Trials from Hopkins and MS Epi - Psychiatric Epi (strong interest in this field) from Harvard.... can someone plz help me decide T_T i want to work in pharma afterwards, not interested in med school. I can't find any graduated students stats for Hopkins..

I've lurked these forums for the past 2 years trying to get the courage to apply for grad school. I remember one post which was especially inspiring because the person had a low GPA but lots of public health experience and was able to get into a school they wanted. I want to share my story and help others who feel like I did and believe there is no hope. Short version: I was academically suspended due to serious mental health problems, got treatment, came back, and finished my degree. I even had to retake classes I had failed but I got really good grades when I returned. Other than the people that I asked for recommendations, only 2 other people knew I was applying because I just knew I wasnt going to get accepted anywhere

Undergrad School: Top 5 Public school
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: <2.5
Major/Minor: Sociology & Foreign Affairs
GradGPA (if applicable):
Grad Studies (if applicable):
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): 1/27/16 - 156V, 152 Q, 5W
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
- 1 year of AmeriCorps working in a community health clinic assisting clients with applying for public benefits and applying to SSI/SSDI
- 4 years of employment at the same clinic working with clients with chronic mental illness and/or intellectual disability who live in poverty. Assisted them with managing their limited income, connecting them with community mental health resources, medication management, maintaining public benefits, etc
- Advocated for better family shelters, more CIT officers, wrote blogs about our work for my organization

I felt that before I could apply to grad school I needed to gain a few years of experience, narrow down what I wanted to focus on and build relationships. I'm really glad there are schools out there that truly consider an entire application, and not just GPA and GRE. I also had excellent recommendations, one of which was from a semi-big deal in public health (I cant stress the importance of building relationships), and a strong/compelling personal statement. My bargaining didn't work with Colorado- which helped me make my decision.

Idk if I'm ready to freeze my ass off but I guess I will be calling A2 my new home! Hope to see some of you there in the fall!

As someone who got into Emory and not UNC, you should go to UNC! It's such a good school and more economical. I went with the more economic choice (Emory was too expensive, UM gave me half off basically), and I'm very happy with my decision already. That's just my advice, good luck to you.
