When I went to admissions info session at Emory yesterday, they said they started to release merit scholarships this past week, and will continue to do so next week.

Spoke with Columbia again about financial packages. Here's what they told me:

"Our merit award recipients have been notified. We are still evaluating our need-based and institutional awards. Financial aid letters will go out in two to three weeks. "

Does Columbia have a separate financial aid application?

Hey! I'm moving to NYC to attend Mailman in August and I'm pretty lost as to how I'm going to approach the whole finding a roommate and living situation thing. Anyone have any advice or insight? Thanks. Congrats to everyone, btw!

I know there has been a lot of communication issues this application process, so I wanted to say that I am very impressed with Yale! I was accepted into EMD just two days ago, and I have already received emails from admissions, a professor in my department, and a current student in my department. Great way to gain resources and feel like your acceptance matters to the school!

Hey, congrats!

I'll be attending mailman too, but for the MHA program. I've been told that the best way to find a roommate is via the mailman/Columbia Facebook pages. There are a bunch of groups on Facebook where you can interact with incoming/current students and hopefully find a roommate. However, you need a @columbia.edu email address to access these groups. I'm waiting for mailman to generate the email id so that I can join those groups.

Additionally, you can check out sites like Craigslist and roomster to find roommates.

If you want to talk more send me a PM!

Anyone planning on attending UC Berkeley's Open House and UC Irvine's Open House in March?

Anyone have any advice on the importance of visiting a school on their designated "admitted students day" versus arranging another time to visit? I really want to make it to as many programs as I can, but the cost of travel adds up and a lot of the visit days are around the same time. For example, I've no idea how I'm going to go see UW on 3/30 and then turn around and see Harvard on 3/31........help meeee.

I am really struggling to find concrete numbers for how much Columbia's 2year MPH costs. I think its ~$36,000 a year but this seems a little low... Anyone have a reliable source/concrete number?

$18,206 per semester for full-time students, so $36,412 per year [http://sfs.columbia.edu/content/mph-2-year-6 "New and continuing students in the MPH 2-year are...charged the flat tuition rate of $18,206 per fall and spring term."]

However, also consider housing, program fees, computer fees, etc https://www.mailman.columbia.edu/become-student/apply/tuition-and-fees

That's actually correct. I have a couple small scholarships, so I pay about $25,000 a year. The other fees don't really amount to much, especially if you have outside insurance already. If you have to purchase student insurance, I would save up some money to cover that cost

Received an email last night from Michigan, 50% Dean's scholarship! This certainly changes things in the decision making process.
Congrats, that's amazing! Was it apart of your financial aid package or was it in a different email?

Thank you! It was a separate email but it was also listed under the financial aid package in the Wolverine/Friend account. I'm not sure if the email preceded the update in the portal or vice versa.

Hi all: I am trying to locate info for admitted students day at Columbia and Harvard, and do not seem to have received an email about either. Where did others find the info?

For Harvard, I had to google for their admitted student's day to find it. They also sent me an email a few days ago with a link.

Columbia has a few visit days, I believe. The first is this Friday, 3/3, and runs from 10am-6pm. Harvard's is on 3/31 and is also all day. They're likely to send out more info closer to the day of.

Brown is literally KILLING ME :bang:

Does anyone have any insights on Brown (generalist MPH) vs Columbia (HPM)? Leaning toward the latter but really wanted to go to Brown for undergrad so a part of me was very very excited about getting in.

Also is anyone going to the Mailmain admitted students day on Friday?

I'll be at the Mailman Admitted Students Day!

So I got into BU about 2 years ago and also got $15k in merit scholarships. I was able to get about $3k more after I emailed them and asked for more after the decision deadline. I'm assuming they were able to give more aid because people had declined (or that's what the email seemed to imply). Obviously 3k isn't a lot, but it was something! I ended up pulling out of the program before the semester started because I got a job offer I couldn't turn down...so I'm hoping that money went to other students.

How exactly did you word your e-mail to them? Also, did you just e-mail the financial aid office, or was there a specific contact? BU is my dream school, and I would love to get more aid out of them to make this dream a bit more affordable.

Yale emailed me and gave me $0 in scholarships and grants. My whole financial aid package consists of Federal loans...

:greedy:Received my financial aid offer from Yale...just over 1/2 tuition scholarship/grant and 20k in loans. My palms are SWEATING. I hadn't really considered Yale as a realistic option because I refuse to take out more in loans than I can realistically earn per year, even for a program as perfectly aligned to my interests as EMD. Still not sure because everyone I know and love is in LA, and UCLA is the most affordable and I am so inclined to do the safe comfortable thing. Yiiiikes I thought the waiting game would be the hard part...decision making is not my strong suit apparently.

Brown's a world class learning institution, but it's never had a strong name in medicine, pharma, or any other health related field. The smart thing to do is to go Columbia. This is coming from someone admitted to Brown and waitlisted at Columbia.

25% tuition from Brown! To the rest of you who were accepted and received financial support: the first letter from the graduate school has a different cost of attendance estimate than the second letter from the MPH Program (unless living expenses somehow amount to nearly $37k/year). Which one is accurate?

Hi! Congrats on your acceptances! My perspective about UW may be a bit skewed because I grew up in Seattle and went there for undergrad. The campus is beautiful. There are so many different communities at UW, I don't think it'll be hard to find a place where you'll fit in if you decide to go. I'm impressed by the curriculum and PBL. Since I've been working full-time "in the field" for the past 2.5 years, I can see the benefits of having that small of a class and constantly working with your peers to face various public health issues. It's literally a working environment.

As for Seattle - I love Seattle, but I'm ready to move since I've been here all my life. The weather from October-April/May is gray, but the summer is amazing. Because of the tech industry boom here, I've interacted with a lot of people who are not originally from here so you won't be the only one. If you live near campus, I agree with the other posts - you won't necessarily need a car + traffic sucks so I would do public transportation. If you move here, definitely get a feel for ALL of the neighborhoods here, not just the popular ones. As for Public Health, a lot of people have master's degrees and the social justice/public health community is strong.

This is my general take, if you have specific questions or want me to elaborate, PM me!

What are people wearing to admitted students days?

So I'm a current Brown student and logged on to my student info portal and something came up saying that I can view my school of public health admissions decision, but when I click on it, it just shows me what I've been able to see for the past month. Is anyone else having this problem???

Did you guys receive a Brown portal? All I got was an email saying my app was complete...

Does anyone have any insight on deferring admissions for a year? Haven't received any admissions decisions yet but am currently dealing with an unexpected family issue.

I did it last year @blairburr very simple process: asked the admissions director to defer for one year, formally accepted my offer, and paid a deposit. That's all there was to it.

25% for me too! I didn't even realize the amounts quoted were different. I'm not sure which is accurate! I would recommend reaching out directly to the financial aid office, or even to the individual who wrote your scholarship letter.

With the number of acceptances you have, I am not surprised you're swamped with visits back to back! But not to worry, most people arrive the day of, so everyone is exhausted. I am sure you'll look fine.
