MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

True but if most are in the US...then 3 hrs is the max difference.

This is coming from a West coast person

True. Being from CA, I remember how painful it was going online apartment hunting while working in retail. I'd get calls at 6:00 AM, since it was 9:00 AM in DC. And for some reason I always seemed to get those early morning calls on nights that I worked the closing shift, after nights I worked the closing shift. I was a zombie for a month.

I received an admissions email from GWU today that said I received a Provisional acceptance to their Global Health Policy program. Does that also mean that I don't qualify for any scholarships?

I'm kind of wondering what the time line is for most schools financial aid offers? As in, how long do you have to wait between being accepted and the final aid offer? Because, honestly, that's probably my biggest deciding factor. I know some schools don't even have some of the fellowship applications close until mid-February.... Also: Congrats to everyone who heard back from NYU today! I hope I'll hear from them soon, too.

Do you have your bachelor's yet? Or do you graduate this spring? The provisional acceptance might be because you don't officially have a bachelor's yet, and they need you to finish that before you start grad school

I think a provisional acceptance means that you are accepted provided you finish required coursework for the concentration such as stats or a math course before graduation. I would check the requirements for the specific track to make sure, but maybe someone else in this thread has a better explanation. I'm currently an undergraduate student and haven't received a provisional acceptance from the two schools I was accepted to, so I don't think it is related to that.

I graduated in 2016. All the email attachment said was that I had to maintain a 3.0 during my first semester. Maybe it's because of my low GRE score? I am worried that this may disqualify me from scholarships. Does anyone know if this happened in previous years?

does anyone know anything about tufts mph in Health Services Management and Policy? i.e. what are strengths/weaknesses etc

Hey guys, new here! First one in my family to apply to graduate school, so I know my question may seem "stupid/silly" but if the deadline for a school has passed (example: deadline 01/15/2017), can I still apply? On SOPHAS, it's showing a red sign of "unavailable." Also, I'm part of the "GPA under 3.0" gang. Any tips on specific schools to apply to/ GRE score? Taking my GRE for the first time 02/16/17. Scored 150 VR, 145 QR, 5W on my most recent practice exam, without studying (I know horrible stats). ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPERCIATED! I'm late in the cycle. Very late. Thanks!

With a sub-3.0 GPA, my advice would be to score above the 90th percentile on the QR and VR sections of the GRE, as well as get a year or two of experience behind your belt, whether that be a job in the medical or health education field, full-time volunteering, research, etc. You will also need to apply broadly. You have not mentioned your experience or your interests, so it is difficult to advise you further.

The availability of the app depends on the school/program. Some schools have a hard deadline, meaning 1/15/17 was the absolute last day to submit applications. Unfortunately with those schools you have to wait until next year. Other schools have a priority deadline meaning you're most likely to hear back earlier and be considered for aid when submitting by this deadline; submitting afterwards would mean your app is reviewed as space permits.

You're taking your GRE very late in the game. I'd wait for next years cycle or apply to Spring 18 programs. I recommend you try schools that have rolling admissions like Tulane. Also, there's plenty examples of people in this cycle with less than perfect stats who were admitted into great programs. Remember the app review process is holistic! What does your experience look like?

Worked as a dental assistant for 3 years, pharmacy technician for 3 years and volunteered with working with children with disabilities. Any suggestions on where to apply? This is all new to me, given my parents are both have associate degrees and I'm the first applying to grad school. I apologize for my ignorance, as I don't have much experience with how to apply etc.!

Anyone else apply to university of Maryland?

Completed my app to the MHA program back in early October and as of last week they said I'm still under review...Not sure how it could possibly take this long

Your experience is good, but I still recommend getting in the 90th percentile on the GRE to help offset your low GPA. I still don't know your interests, so can't advise you on programs. Besides, I only know about my program, so I try to avoid giving that sort of advice. Don't worry about applying by priority deadlines as you won't be eligible for scholarships anyway (I know how you feel; I wasn't either). Since this is all new to you, I suggest you search this forum and check out the useful websites in the stickies. Search programs for deadlines. If you don't want to be rushed, wait till next cycle to apply. This will give you time to really study for the GRE and rock it.

Good luck!

Yeah, I'm gonna echo what others said. I thought about applying late last year as I decided I for sure wanted an MPH in February. But after reading through this forum and doing some research, I saw that most of the programs that interested me only gave funding to people who applied by a priority deadline. The extra time also gave me a chance to really study for the GRE (which I really needed to do since I've been out of school for several years and hadn't had a math/stat/quant class in over a decade) and write, revise, and edit a personal statement I am very proud of. I also think that since your GPA is low and your practice GRE isn't >90%ile, applying early for next cycle will boost your admissions chances as there will be a greater number of open spots at each school than there are now.

Which MPS track(s) will you be applying for?

You should look into programs for people who already have substantial work experience (there's a name for them...Professional I think? Probably varies by school). I'm not sure about what those require, but they might care less about the GPA since you've been out of school for longer.

From last years thread a lot of GH for Emory was accepted Feb 1st and 2nd. Let's hope this year is the same!

Thank you for your advice! I'm taking my GRE 02/16/17, I'm hoping that I do well. I was looking into Epidemiology, very interesting to me. However, I'm honestly very nervous given I'm so late into the cycle. Any point in continuing my application, or just throw in the towel? Someone mentioned Tulane has rolling. Any other schools have similar rolling admission?

Thank you for your honest advice, I truly appreciate it. Sincerely I do! I'll try my best to score in the 90 percentile for now!

I heard from them about a week ago, but for MPH not MHA. The chair of the department I applied for has been very receptive to emails and questions - it might be worth emailing the chair of your department for an update? (By the way, I also submitted my app in October to UMD - they said they didn't start reviewing until Mid-December)

Is anyone having application completeness issues with Michigan? I submitted on 12/14 just before the deadline and my wolverine account still says "Application Incomplete". I've contacted them 3 times, 1/3, 1/17 and today, and I keep getting the run around. No one will tell me if I'm actually missing something or if it has yet to be processed 😡
I'd withdraw the app all together but I doubt I'd get those $75 back lol

Hey! I had similar issues with mine, I also submitted 12/14 and it wasn't marked complete for a while. I finally decided to email admissions instead of calling them and someone responded to me within a day saying it was a mistake on their part, that it should've been marked complete a month before. If you haven't tried emailing, I'd give it a shot! Wondering if they had an issue with their system that day...

Congrats! I'm curious - what made you decide to apply to Temple? I'm considering adding their JD/MPH program to the long list of programs I am applying to.
I applied because I am currently located in Philly! Just got into Penn today so waiting on Drexel (end of the month they said) to complete my Philly trifecta 😛

Yea, I emailed them and they just said I'm under review by my dept. They forwarded my message to the dept. chair but haven't heard from him.

Was just confused because they told me it would be a 4-6 week process in October, now it's looking like 4-6 months.
