MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Best of luck to you! The scholarship I received was a decent amount, message me if you'd like to know the package. Their website says they offer a limited # of merit-based scholarships between $5k-$15k for those who applied by Feb 1. Not sure how many they offer after that day, though!

Thank you! I think I’ll email them!

Question! If two schools you are interested in are having admitted students visit day on the same day, how do you choose which to go to?
Emory is super well known and there’s a lot of info online
Mt Sinai on the other hand is not as known and there’s not much info out there

I'm going to the Emory Thursday optional day and then flying to UNC for their Admit Day. I'm not sure if that's an option for you, but I can at least see two of the four programs that have Admit Days that Friday.

I just contacted JHU admissions office moments ago asking for informations about my application, and they said they are sending decisions email by tomorrow morning, decision status will also be available on the portal page after 5PM today eastern standard time. Totally freaking out right now! anyone who hasn't heard from JHU, brace yourselves!
(I'm applying for the MSPH in International Health [Health systems])
Ahh this definitely got me way too excited (I applied to International Health Systems as well) but my portal page hasn't changed so not sure if I will be hearing back during this round. Did you see any updates on your portal?

Same! My portal hasn't changed yet. I've been checking it non-stop.

Is there any precedent for successfully leveraging a scholarship with Hopkins? I was at BU this weekend (I'm in the MS program) and was asking about the timeline for merit based scholarship decisions, and was advised to contact the department now saying I already had a merit based offer as it's easier to allocate funds now rather than reallocate later. Should I bother leveraging with Hopkins (and if so do it now or wait until after I've received my package) or just be happy with 75% off the second year? Thoughts?
How much $ did you get with your NYU acceptance? Congrats btw!

thanks for the advice! i didnt consider that but i’ll definitely look into it

Is there anyone still waiting for decision from Brown? That's the only MPH program I still haven't heard from+pity+

Does anyone have any thoughts on Wash U, St Louis' program? I applied because I found the Social Work/Public Health combined school interesting but I haven't heard a lot about the program. I'm going to their Admitted Students Day in April.

I received my admission letter from Brown this morning but I applied to the MS program in Epi. But I imagine there is a different admissions committee for the MPH programs.

Yes, my portal changed around 5 pm EST today, and they said that the official acceptance letter will be sent via email in around 24-48 hours. When did you submit your application? I submitted mine December 30th and got a complete notification Jan 10th. Perhaps you should contact the Admissions office, they will reply to your inquiry promptly. Good luck, I hope you'll hear good news soon:clap:

Thanks! My application was completed really late(around Feb 1) because of the delivery delay of my IELTS report, so maybe I still have to wait for some time

I applied to ScM in Epi at Brown as well, but haven't heard back yet. My application was completed in early January. When was yours? I am really getting worried about my decision. Can you share your stats if you don't mind?

Came home from work to find my Emory admission package! Enjoying my gift, but I was hoping to find a nice full-tuition check inside. lol Jk 😛

Congratualtions to those continuing to receive awesome acceptances and good luck to those still waiting to hear back, including financial aid notifications! 😀

Hello,
I applied to UCLA, UW COPHP program, Emory, Yale, and Harvard.

I was rejected from Harvard on Thursday, but at this point I assume I was rejected from Yale. I really wish they would send the rejection email.

Further, I was accepted to Emory, UW COPHP program, and UCLA, but still do not have financial aid offers from any of them. UW gave me a 5,000 dollar scholarship, but it seems a bit low considering program costs is anywhere from 50,000-65,000. I know I qualify for work-study, but seriously I am not planning to be in debt my whole life.

Does anyone know when offers will be sent? I feel like UW is my first choice, but if I am offered scholarships at UCLA or Emory that could sway me. My UCLA offer said I was being considered for scholarships. Any thoughts?

Also, don't think this necessary, so will leave what I feel doesn't matter blank.
Overall Undergrad GPA: 3.48
GRE:
Other Factors: First generation Latina
Applied: Emory (1/5- Global Health), UCLA (12/1 - Community Health), UW COPHP 1/16, Harvard 12/1, Yale 1/15
Accepted: Emory, UCLA, UW
Rejected: Harvard

Congratulations on your acceptances so far. 🙂 I don't know about UCLA or UW, but Emory releases their finaincial aid packages sometime in March, but definitely before their admitted student day event (March 22nd - 23rd).

One of my former advisor's mentees went to Wash U at St. Louis before it was CEPH accredited and she is doing pretty well for herself now, if that helps 😛

Anyone apply to the MS-80 Psychiatric Epidemiology track at Harvard and hear back yet?

Haha...I am planning to do the same thing, but I'm waiting to hear from UNC on scholarships to decide if it's worth it. Have you heard anything about when they'll be releasing financial aid packages/scholarship information?

I'm trying to calculate the total cost of attendance for all my current options and realizing that actually, I'm an idiot. I have so many questions. Do I attend classes in the summer? Do I pay the school if I'm still around in the summer but doing research or an internship? Do I have to pay health insurance, and is it even available at some schools?

PS - pro tip, I don't think most schools include cost of travel (flights, trains, etc) in their estimates. Don't forget about those! Thanksgiving and possibly spring break, too.

Re: health insurance, you will either need to purchase the university's student health insurance policy or receive a waiver (which requires providing proof that you have health insurance independently). I'm going to assume at most schools you'll be able to find insurance externally that is significantly cheaper.

Most schools you can calculate out either by credit or by semester. For the semester ones, I didn't include summer since I figured that's when you'd be doing an internship. Also, don't forget those pesky fees! Some (NYU, Columbia, etc) have a lot so it significantly increases tuition.
You do have to pay health insurance, unless you're covered by your parents. Some schools may still require that you buy theirs though if your parents have one where the coverage wouldn't be as good as the school's in that region. Every school I've looked into has it, I think they're required to since it's illegal now to not have it.

Anybody from Baltimore who has advice on finding a place close to Bloomberg? Studios or one br? Thank you!

I am an undergrad at JHU. Most grad students actually live around Homewood. East Baltimore is not the safest area to live in. When i worked on the medical campus, most other medical student or PhD student would still live around Homewood. There is JHMI shuttle from Homewood. During rush hour, it departs from Homewood every ten min.

If you want to save money, you could pay as little as 400-500 bucks in a townhouse, or 600-800 for a 2-bedroom apartment. You can also pay as much as 1500 bucks for fancy apartment at the Village Lofts.

Do you want to be right near the school or is a bit further away okay? I'm not from Baltimore but I have family and friends there. I've heard that a lot of students live in the Mount Vernon area, which is only about 1.5 mile away and accessible by a shuttle.

Mount Vernon is one of the stop for JHMI shuttle. From Homewood, there is an express shuttle. But mount Vernon is another place where grad students are concentrated.

I lived briefly in Baltimore with someone going to JHU Med, it seemed most med students did house shares in Canton/Fells Point area.

Congrats on your acceptances! You have some really great programs to choose from even if you don't get into Yale (which you still might!).

How did you find out about your scholarship for UW COPHP? I was admitted on 2/8, submitted by FAFSA well before that (as well as an essay for a fellowship) and haven't heard anything about financial aid/scholarships.

I live in Baltimore! Like others have said, Mt. Vernon is relatively close to the school and a lot of grad students live there. From what I've heard, Mt. Vernon also seems to be the best place to find a one bedroom. Charles Village is further away, but has a lot of studios, and is also on the shuttle route.

I'd also recommend looking into Fells Point/Upper Fells. This area is the most "fun," with a lot of social activities and restaurants/bars. I think it will be harder to find a one bedroom or studio here, but I know a lot of people who live with roommates and love it.

Edited to mention that the shuttle ride from Charles Village is about 20-25 min and 10-15 min from Mt. Vernon. The shuttle gets PACKED during busy times of day and people often have to wait for several shuttles to pass before getting on at Mt. Vernon.. just something else to consider!

Thanks for the information! Is there a shuttle from the Fells Point/Upper Fells area you mentioned? Is it less busy?

Hey y'all. So I've received offers at Michigan for a scholarship, and then for a work study/subsidized loan. BUT this package doesn't cover my overall cost of attendance. Are these offers final? I know there are other loan types out there. Does this mean I just didn't get them orr... Asking here before emailing them because I know some of you may be in the same situation.

is anyone still waiting to hear back from Berkeley? I feel like I'm the only person still waiting on them! At this point, I don't hold out much hope that I've gotten in, but I'd still like to know!
I am still waiting to hear back as well. I applied to the HSB program, which did you apply to? I understand how you feel; at this point, I feel like I've lost point for getting into their program, but just want to know my status 🙁.

I emailed them last week or two weeks ago and they just told me it could take until mid-March.

That could very well be their final offer, but you won't know unless you ask the school. There is a cap on the amount of federal loans institutions can offer graduate students, and it is common to hit the cap before it covers the total cost of attendance. It's also possible you don't meet their criteria for all graduate loan types. They expect you to make up the difference with your own money (savings, job, private loans, etc.).

Hey guys, I know Harvard’s admitted student day is the 23rd, but they haven’t sent out the official email yet. Has anyone booked their visit yet? I’m nervous about doing it before the official email but also want to make sure I get a good price on tickets/hotel.

I applied IDV! Really? mid march? That's pretty late... I wonder why they wait so long to disclose results because i'm pretty sure we would've heard back from most programs by then...

If you log in to your personalized landing page (admissions.sph.harvard.edu/YOUR FULL NAME), there's a link on the left "Admitted Students Events." There, you can register for the event, see a tentative agenda, and register any guests you're bringing with you.

That's what they said, it might be specific to HSB though. Not too sure. I might email your department contact to inquire!

Thanks you guys for the quick and helpful responses! This is why this community is so great.

I'm leaning toward Fells Point/Upper Fells/Patterson, but Homewood also sounds promising. What's your take on the areas you have to pass through to get to Bloomberg if you're coming from Fells Point and Homewood, respectively?
