Has Yale sent out any new information on admitted students day?

I inquired about this a couple days ago and this is the information I was given

"Congratulations again on your admission to YSPH! While our schedules for the Open Houses have not be solidified just yet, I can give you an idea about what the day will look like.

Typically, the day starts around 8:30 with a coffee/light breakfast, followed by welcome remarks by the Associate Dean. We then hold round table discussions for 2 hours in the morning, and these round tables give you an overview of financial aid, career services, student internship examples, research topics, library resources and concentration opportunities. After the round tables, we go to our main classroom building for lunches with the department chairs. This gives you an opportunity to review the curriculum and meet faculty and current students. We will then hold a keynote on the opioid crisis, followed by a student panel that allows for a Q&A with a range of current students. Finally, the day ends with an overview of Life in New Haven (topics covered include housing and graduate student life) and a happy hour at Yale’s iconic Mory’s. The day usually ends around 4:30-5:00.

If for some reason you cannot make it to New Haven for one of our Open Houses, then I can certainly connect you with any desired resources remotely – for example, I can connect you with a Career Services representative, a Financial Aid representative and a current student, if that would be of interest.

In the meantime, please continue to check your email for updates – more information to come!"

This isn't public health-related at all, but I just lost my cat of 14.5 years today. It was so sudden. I'm totally on board for a cat epidemiology field of study. I hope you're hanging in there. Losing pets sucks.

I'm completely attached to my dog, so I cannot imagine how you're feeling. So sorry 🙁
I hope that it gets better with time--

For anyone admitted into Berkeley, how long after you got the "recommended for admission" email, did you get an official acceptance from the Graduate Division? It's been a week for me and I'm a natural worrier, so I can't help but panic a little that I haven't received it yet. Thanks in advance!

I was in the same exact situation last week! I heard back 11 days later (the longest 11 days of my life haha)

hope you hear back soon! 🙂

Does anyone have any insight into if/how global epi degrees vs straight epi degrees are viewed differently? I'm torn between a MS in Epi at BU and a MSPH in Global Epi at Hopkins (and maybe a MPH at Columbia?). I'm 100% sure I want to work in global epidemiology, but all the advice I've heard has been "build your hard skills," and it seems a MS will be more hard skillsy. But it feels silly to dismiss Hopkins on the grounds that the degree is too aligned with what I want career-wise. Anyone have thoughts?

Isn't the JHU's MSPH a "Masters of Science in Public Health"? Personally, I'd go to JHU in your shoes just because the global health bench at JHU is pretty deep. Just being around faculty that are interested in global health epi, and actually distinguished in the field I think would be a bigger help, in terms of figuring out what sort of job you might want, and what skills you'd want to bulk up. Just doing an MS in Epi at a school not super distinguished for global health work seems like more of a shot gun approach, versus with JHU you could get terrific exposure to exactly that field, and figure out what skills to focus on.

Nine days, but it felt like forever!

To add on you She-Hulk, the courses are super application-based: check out the course catalog!

For anyone who is waiting for the MPH Full Time (11-month program) at JHU - my portal just changed with the admissions decision:

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into the MPH - Full time for Summer (July) 2018 at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

@wwmmkk Can you talk a bit about the TA/RA positions at Brown? What is the usual pay per semester? How much do you get to offset some tuition fee? When do students usually get these position?

Thank you!
TA positions are harder to come by, and I don't know of any first year MPH students who have them except for those cross-enrolled in other programs (PhD students in other departments or 5th-year MPH students who are TAing for undergrads). The bigger, intro MPH classes that I have taken (epi and biostats) all have one TA who is a PhD student and 1-3 who are second year MPH students who did well in the course last year. I'm also taking a smaller SAS course that has a PhD student for a TA; I don't think an MPH student would get that position. I think they put in ~10 hours/week but can't comment on the pay.

RA positions are more common. If this is something that interests you, it's important to connect with the professor you want to work with in August/September. I know plenty of people who got them later (I just got one this semester), but I'd recommend hitting the ground running because it will make planning for your thesis much easier. There are other RA positions/assistantships in the med school, health dept, hospitals etc. that email out calls for applicants mostly in the beginning of the fall semester. As for pay, I am working 10 hours/week and will get $600/month stipend and ~1.2k off tuition for the semester, and I would assume people working more hours would have a comparable pay increase. I am not sure if people working in the "outside" RA positions get the same rate.

Hope this helps!

Did they tell you that you received a scholarship with the admissions decision? Just wondering when that piece is announced.

I received a separate email with the PDF decision letter saying that I would get 75% tuition coverage if I enrolled for the MSPH program (no word for the full time MPH program yet as I haven't received the formal letter in my email yet) but it normally comes in the letter that they send you via email.

Congrats 75% of tuition is great!!!

Thanks that's helpful. I've only gotten an email about my MS program, but no official PDF decision letter so maybe that's still to come. I'm still waiting on a decision for MPH so hopefully that's coming soon too!

Accepted at JHU for the MSc in Epidemiology!

Now just the agonizing wait for the decision from Harvard.

SAME - HARVARD needs to hurry up. It looks like historically Harvard has sent out application decisions on the last Thursday of February which is coming up in two days so fingers crossed for good news!

I feel obligated to let you know that I love when you post because I just imagine that you are the dog in your picture, typing about grad school decisions and attending JHU with 75% tuition coverage. What a good dog!

How long after the portal updated did you receive an email?

OMG DYING HAHA I'll be sure to tell my dog that and give him a treat for all his hard work - Also I plan to get him a little doggy tshirt with whatever school I end up going to to make him even more extra.

I actually received the email first for the MSPH program (at the time, my portal still said "application for review") and then I checked this morning, I saw that the portal changed but I think you should receive an email 24-48 hours after the portal changes.

To the people with the Visit Emory group:
Can you add me to the Facebook page? I don't have access to it yet

I found your name with the correct prof picture and added you-- maybe check your other folder on messenger since we aren't fb friends?

May I ask when you got your "application completed email"? Was it the same day?
Application completed email I got on January 16th! I always gauge it from that day because technically that's when the admissions committee actually gets the app.

Hey! In the exact same boat as you. Was contemplating between choosing an epi focused mph vs international health msph. If you look at the ciriculum at jhu's msph it actually has quite the extensive training in epi method spanning the entire first year. I would believe JHU wouldn't leave you ill equipped with quantitative skills either.
I also think JHU's wide connections internationally will make a significant difference in starting a career in international health and will open so many more doors.

If you really wanna make sure you don't fall short on epi skills, I think it might help to obtain course outlines from these courses and compare their content across schools.

So yea. Totally choosing JHU.

Did you mean to say 12k off of tuition for the semester instead of 1.2k?? I'm really hoping it's 12k lol

Probably the only one here who applied to Oxford. Got rejected today. Not surprised AT ALL! DUH. And the fact that they rejected me just solidifies their sacred position in my heart. Lol.

I was so excited about that until I actually calculated the cost of tuition based on their 4 semester per year system.... totally doesn't sound as significant as it appears to be. It rounds up to about the same as other private schools.

Columbia doesn’t - I checked! Am wondering if JHU offers travel stipends, as well.

Oh, and for UMich, this is the response I got when I enquired:

“In regards to travel funds for Admitted Student Day, you will want to connect with Jackie Cormany, [email protected].“

Hope this helps anyone who’s curious!
I asked JHU. They don't...

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from Yale Chronic Disease Epi? I’ve only seen a couple mentions of it in this thread.

Has everyone who got into Columbia already heard from financial aid?
Nope. I emailed them a week ago and they said that it would take 7-10 business days for that to come through (earliest this Friday).

I did after my merit scholarship and financial aid, I would have to come up with about ~30 grand for the program. I found out last week. I think it has to due with the timing of you FASTA.

Are others still waiting to hear from Berkeley MPH after last week's wave of acceptances? 😱 I applied for Epi/Bio... hoping it's not all rejections from here on out
I'm still waiting for HPM. It seems that a couple of people were accepted last week for that department as well, but I haven't heard anything. I did apply super late on 11/28 and my application wasn't finalized until 12/19 so I'm gonna hope that's the reason.

Also waiting for Berkeley and UCLA! Both apps weren't confirmed until the week of 12/19...... I saw that a wave of people got accepted to Berkeley Epi/Bio last week but haven't really seen any recent acceptances to UCLA Epi? Someone correct me if I'm wrong! :hungover:

I was admitted to UCLA's MS in Epi a week and a half ago. However, still waiting to hear from Berkeley about their MS program. Has anyone been admitted to this program yet?

Nope, I meant what I said. This is pure conjecture, but I think the school reduced funding for RA positions so that they could offer them to more students and save money. There are also positions that I thiiiink offer 25% off tuition (so like 10k/semester) given out with admission, but I'm pretty sure that funding model has been phased out as I only know 2nd year students who have them. That said, almost all first year students I know have a 25% off merit scholarship. The RA position may not be paying more than my rent, but I'm glad to have the experience.

Not sure how many people are applying to MS Epi here, I think MS and MPH decisions go out separately as they are "different" degrees (correct me if I'm wrong).
