MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are others still waiting to hear from Berkeley MPH after last week's wave of acceptances? 😱 I applied for Epi/Bio... hoping it's not all rejections from here on out
Also waiting for Berkeley and UCLA! Both apps weren't confirmed until the week of 12/19...... I saw that a wave of people got accepted to Berkeley Epi/Bio last week but haven't really seen any recent acceptances to UCLA Epi? Someone correct me if I'm wrong! :hungover:
Waiting for both UCLA and Berkeley as well, it feels like it's been forever :eyebrow:

Has everyone who got into Columbia already heard from financial aid?

I got my FAFSA confirmation email on January 26. Got the Columbia acceptance letter on January 22, the Mission Award ($5k/year) letter on January 30, and financial aid award letter on February 14 ($33k in unsubsidized loans only sigh).

I received that too! The email congratulated us, mentioned the admittance day and welcomed us into the community so I am taking it as an admittance?! So excited!!
Same here! And I agree I think we are set. Who is going to admitted students day?????
Berkeley is my undergrad alma mater so I know it's an incredible but v. tough school and I'm torn between Berkeley, UW, and Mich gaaahh

Just got into Harvard!!! I just got an email saying that the admissions decision was ready in the my.harvard portal and the decision letter was waiting there!
congratulations!! which program???

I am not seeing a lot of prospective UW SPH students on here (but admittedly have not gone through all ~64 pages of this massive yet awesome forum), who else is considering UW SPH as one of their top choices??

I am currently torn between UW, Berkeley and Michigan -- anybody in the same boat? also, anyone attending admitted student days for any of these schools?

Thanks and congrats to all those who have heard back and good luck to those still waiting!!

I am also considering UW for Health Services. I was accepted back on 2/1. I am still waiting for Berkeley. I am hoping UW will be releasing awards and aid soon because it is one of my top choices.

I was accepted to health services too! 🙂 Will you be attending the admitted students day?

QUESTION!!

- I got rejected from Hopkins MPH on Saturday. But I applied to the MPH and the MSPH, still haven't heard back from MSPH
- Just got email saying 'Welcome to Johns Hopkins! We are pleased you're considering our school... here is your fin aid login blah blah blah'
- Included login info, so I login and on the side it says Student:MSPH

Does this mean I'm in??

I want to attend the admitted students day of wherever I decide to go because I can't afford to visit all of them. I will be there at HSERV's visit day in March if they give me enough aid haha

Can I ask whether you provided parental information on your fafsa? I know that Columbia was one of the few schools that requested it.

Maybe??? Did you check your portal? What does it say?

Portal still says 'Application sent for review'. I'm going to call first thing tomorrow AM.

I received an official email before the portal changed (it still said application sent for review) even though I got a PDF saying congratulations to the Hopkins MSPH program via email. It took 24 hours for my portal to change. I'm pretty sure you got in!

Interesting mine was the opposite. My portal changed and then a few hours later I got an email from the admissions director. Today (24+ hours later) I got an "official" acceptance letter from the school. It does sound like an admission, but I'm hesitant to assume so until I know for sure. The worst would be to think you had gotten in only to find out you actually hadn't....

Very true. I'll try to contain my excitement until I call them at 8am tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your input!

I did not provide parental information because Columbia didn't require me to when I emailed them for more details about this. If parental information is not included, they use other variables to determine financial aid need, such as prior government grants/loan borrowing, which they can see on your FAFSA. Because I already had a financial aid history from undergrad (got a ton of grants, work study, and subsidized loans), I didn't include my parent's information. Getting a financial aid package of only loans is pretty common from Columbia apparently.

I emailed all the other schools I applied to and they all said that they don't look at parental information even if its provided.

Is anyone else feeling just generally anxious and stressed and excited all at once during this period of their lives? Like, I feel anxious and excited to just move to whatever school I’m going to even though there’s 5 months left and I also feel anxious about how this will all turn out and I thought that waiting for admissions would be more stressful but I think this time period is worse! Does anyone else feel this?

totally! especially because I'm still waiting to hear about financial aid, trying to imagine myself living in the respective cities, low-key stressing that I may make the wrong decision -- it's a lot, but at least we have spaces like these to support each other! and I am looking forward to actually meeting other prospective students soon 🙂

For sure. Especially when you have friends and family that are pressuring you to go one way and you don't know the financial situation for most schools and haven't heard back from a few yet. Then people wonder why you haven't decided yet. If you need me I'll be hibernating until August...:bang:

YES. Also, I can't focus at all at work, so I feel pretty useless right now...

congrats on your acceptances! which Harvard program did you apply to and when did you find out? thanks!
Just so you know, you can click on someone’s username and see all of their previous posts. It’s definitely easier than trying to comb through the whole thread.

I'm hella stressed. I have not heard anything from the JHU MSPH Int'l. My application was complete on January 18. Should I assume my chances are low and I've been rejected? 😢

Isn't the JHU's MSPH a "Masters of Science in Public Health"? Personally, I'd go to JHU in your shoes just because the global health bench at JHU is pretty deep. Just being around faculty that are interested in global health epi, and actually distinguished in the field I think would be a bigger help, in terms of figuring out what sort of job you might want, and what skills you'd want to bulk up. Just doing an MS in Epi at a school not super distinguished for global health work seems like more of a shot gun approach, versus with JHU you could get terrific exposure to exactly that field, and figure out what skills to focus on.
Thanks so much for your advice! I'm really attracted to JHU's program, but I was just wondering if "global epi" vs "epi" seems like a softer degree, since a MS in Epi is 100% epi/stats classes, and if that actually makes a difference to employers.

I totally understand where you're coming from! Having to make these kind of decisions such as where to go to school and where you see yourself working at is pretty stressful. However for me, its petty clear where I'll end up. 😉 The question for me is whether I'm ready to take the big step into my career pursuit. When I look at where people are coming from in terms of where they have been working or doing since undergrad, i feel inadequate and unprepared in some way. The job I'm at now is totally unrelated to my undergrad degree and my masters program. I'm debating whether or not to defer till next year and try diligently to find a relevant health related position somewhere. I'm hoping to have an idea of how to move forward by April 16th. Lol

Its overwhelming at the moment, but I'm very excited for what the future holds! Congratulations everyone and i can't wait to see where we all end up! 😀

I haven't heard back yet and mine was submitted in November so I've already figured it's bad news.

I would reaaaaally encourage you to just start school. People on this forum are way more qualified and experienced than most people just starting MPH programs. Classes will start assuming people have no prior experience in the topic. The schools who admitted you wouldn't have if you weren't qualified. Don't fall victim to impostor syndrome before you're even there!

Also, it's hard to find a public health job without a public health degree. I tried for ~8 months and had two interviews for positions which were ultimately given to people with MPHs. If you want to work to save up money, that's a different story, of course. That said, theoretically you'll be earning more after your MPH than you are now.

Long time lurker, first time poster, because guys I've been accepted to 5/6 programs I've applied to and I'm only waiting on the last one, Harvard (because of course, that's the last one!) and I'm getting so anxious, and you guys are like the only people who understand!

I am debating but most likely. I did not buy plane tickets yet because I am highly considering accepting Berkeley's offer, dependent if a scholarship pulls through. Did you apply for their travel grant?
Yes but I haven't heard anything so far. So are you going to Berkeley's admitted students day?

Long time lurker but I was a SUPER late applicant to all programs (My SOPHAS app was submitted on 2/3 and coursework was verified 5 days ago on 2/15) but I just got an acceptance this afternoon around 2:30 from UC Denver's MPH in Global Public Health within FIVE days! I'm so ecstatic!! I also applied to UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill, UMN (dual MPH/MPP) and Johns Hopkins (lol, that will never happen), but I am guessing I won't hear for quite a few weeks. Just thought I'd finally chime in and see if anyone else is considering Colorado??

CONGRATS!!! That's awesome! Did you JUST get an email, as in after the admissions office closed for the day? Or did you check the portal and it was changed? I'm so anxiously waiting to hear about the ScM epi decisions!!!!!!!!!!!:nailbiting:
I checked my portal and my decision was there! I've been checking all day, so my portal must have changed after the admissions office was closed.
