MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks! I'm leaning towards Emory (global health) - I visited the campus last year and really fell in love with the school, but my decision will largely come down to what the financial aid package looks like. Unsubsidized loans are no joke! I might defer for a year to save up more money...

What about you?
Make sure to think about what you'll be qualified for currently-- most short-term jobs out of undergrad barely pay above the cost of living, so while you may save a couple thousand, it's unlikely to significantly offset your loans-- but it will take away a whole year of full-time work after you have your degree. I'm a big fan of taking time off to find the right career or to become more competitive, but think that, in your case, the time would probably be better spent just starting the program rather than deferring.

Has anybody heard back from Harvard? If so, when did you hear back? The admitted students day is a month away and I need to be able to plan ahead gahhhhh!!!

I could be wrong, but I was thinking that @busybee13 has been in the workforce for a while and would therefore be able to save more than that in a year. I don’t plan to defer, but I’ve definitely thought about it since my starting salary post-MPH probably won’t be much higher (if at all) than where I am now, especially when you factor in interest rates. 😱

I need advice! I've been accepted to UMN and my state school, OHSU-PSU. They would both result in no debt post graduation, but I've been struggling on a decision. UMN is well known and has a robust Epi program, while OHSU-PSU is not well known but has a small program/incoming class (which could be a benefit). I'm hoping to get a PhD after my MPH (with time off in-between to gain more work experience). Does anyone have insight into either program? Or how much does prestige matter in terms of where you get your MPH if you are interested in PhD?

Honestly, if you will be in little to no debt after attending UMN, then I would go there since it's highly ranked.

Based on the time point in 2016 and 2017, Harvard releases its result on the last Thursday of February, which is today! Is anyone also waiting for the 45-credit Health Management? Figure crossed!

Me!!! I'm so frustrated. Hope we both get in.

Good luck to both us!
BTW, do you have any thoughts on the accelerated Health Policy & Management MPH program at Columbia? I will probably take this one if I do not hear good news from Harvard.

Emory is my top choice and I'll most likely end up there. I'm thinking about defering for a year as well! I'm going to the Visit Emory event and I'll make my final decision afterwards. I have a lot of worries about starting school this fall and if the current students and faculty can calm me down, then I'll feel more confident about enrolling this fall.

Yup, I've been in the workforce for a few years now and I'm in the same boat about my starting post-MPH salary probably not being much higher than my current salary. Through my various positions, I've met a mix of people that have their masters and are unable to find a job, are still completing internships, or are making just about the same salary as I currently am. Of course, there are also those who are happily employed and your degree is what you make of it, but I've found that the job market competition is so incredibly high, especially in major cities. To me it's pretty scary to make a commitment of thousands of dollars and not know how long it will take before it pays off-or in this case how long until I pay it off. In the end, I think everyone's situation is a bit different and they have to find what works for them 🙂

That's a good point. I initially was going to take two years off after undergrad but I didn't have much luck in the job market, so I made the impulsive decision to apply to grad schools. Defering for a year is slowly beginning to not sound like the best idea for me. lol

How long have people waited after they received an "Application Complete" email from Yale? I received that email Jan 29th but still, no updates on the decision. This is the last decision letter I'm waiting for so I'm kind of anxious about it.
I got application complete on January 16th and haven't heard back from them either

Congrats! Any word on $$? I got in last month and am anxiously awaiting any word on scholarships...
Not yet - I’ll update if I hear back, too! Congrats to you as well and I hope you hear back from them re. scholarships soon!

I don't think that is a hard rule, one of my seniors actually received his acceptance on 02/13 for the 2017 cycle, which is no Thursday or Friday
That being said, I do hope we all hear from Harvard before the weekend since I myself feel like it has been ages

What tracks are people being accepted to/rejected from for Harvard? Any MPH-65 global health?

(Also, yes, I have creeped back on people's intro posts, but many people didn't do one)

I heard back exactly six weeks after I received the application complete email. But, I’ve heard other applicants have a much faster turnaround

Whelp, I received my application complete email way longer than 6 weeks ago 😛. Guess I will just have to wait it out! Thank you for your input and congrats again!

I don't have experience with those programs, but I recently asked for guidance from a faculty member at my research institution. He told me if I wanted to go into academia, choosing a higher ranked school might help with getting into a PhD/DrPH program. He also mentioned that it is worth visiting the schools to gauge how well you fit into the program, if they have appropriate mentors who fit your research interests, and the other students around you, among other things. I'd agree with the other person who responded to you that going to UMN, if you have little to no debt afterwards, would be the better choice based on your career trajectory afterwards!

Hi! Sorry I don't have advice, but when did you get into OHSU-PSU? I got an e-mail from them this morning regarding Financial aid/portal access and got excited but no official acceptance yet.
