omg NEWS. got REJECTED by HARVARD this morning! LOL
I applied for MS epi 80 credit.
Although I never expected to get in. but still a little sad. But I can finally move on! yay!

Hey! I can't actually believe I'm writing this, but I was just accepted to Tulane! I've spent close to two years looking through all these posts to see people with similar stats as mine, so I decided to post mine to give some hope to future applicants. This process REALLY is holistic!

Undergrad School: California State School
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.15
Major/Minor: Hospitality
GRE (including date taken): 158v 144q ( yup… ) taken 1/6/18

I’m a career changer and have been working full time for about 4 years.

Interested in: migrant populations, youth sexual health education, HIV/AIDS
Applied(include the date of application): Tulane – international health & development; SDSU – Epi . SOPHAS verified 2/26
Accepted: Tulane! (3/6)

Just got denied from Berkeley HSB... I expected it but I wish I didn't have to wait so long.
Guess UCLA it is!

Does anyone have any opinions on epidemiology at UMich (MPH) vs. JHU (MS)? I'm particularly interested in research and biostats/methodology. I feel like Michigan has a it more of a basic science focus while JHU seems more clinically oriented? Any and all opinions welcome!

I was accepted this week for the MSPH/PHD in Epidemiology and the admit day is March 23. I know we may have applied to different programs, but just wanted to share what I know 🙂 Also, just in case you’re wondering, you should probably hear a decision back next week! They told me almost all decisions go out early to mid March. Good luck!

Not a dumb question as this ends up being a huge pain if not thought through ahead of time. The short answer is it depends, and the documentation that came with your award should say whether or not it is taxable. I believe most awards that just go towards tuition reduction/remission are not taxable but that fellowships and stipends vary. If it doesn't say in the documentation, ask someone in financial aid or the office of student employment because chances are whoever signed off on the award at the school/program do not remember the exact details.

Good answer. Most anything with a service component (assistantship, work study) is taxable if you're getting a paycheck. Emory's REAL program is an example

Thanks for the reply! I guess I’ll wait to see if I actually get an award and then assume that’s it’ll actually be less than it is due to taxes. But, I’ll defeintly contact someone when the time comes.

Hi everyone! This thread has been super helpful to me during the admissions process!! Thank you to everyone who has shared their insights on different programs and financial considerations etc.
Just wanted to chime in, in case anyone is wondering about Yale and Columbia-I was accepted to Yale's MPH in Chronic Disease Epi yesterday and Columbia's MPH Epi on January 22nd! I submitted all my applications around the deadlines listed on SOPHAS.
I am still waiting to hear back from JHU MS Epi, Harvard MS Epi, and Stanford MS Epi.

I'm banking on it. After next week, Emory's admitted student day is that Thursday and Friday and they told me they'll send finaincial aid packages before then. I think the same goes for many other schools who are having their admitted student day events at the end of March and/or the beginning of April.

Do NOT commit before they offer you funding! While you would *think* they would guarantee some kind of funding. I was admitted into a doctoral program which just told me they have 0 funding for me.... I am so devastated but so thankful I kept my options open.
My situation is rare, unlikely, and super ****ty, but it is better safe than sorry.

Thank you for your insight. I definitely won’t be committing without knowing my funding status. I just hope I get a fellowship or training grant!! Hopefully I hear back soon. I’m sorry about your situation, though. Hopefully everything works out for you.

Everybody breathe. At a lot (most?) schools, faculty and staff work through breaks during the semester and only really get any time off during the summer and winter. I would imagine more work gets done over spring break since they're not dealing with as many current students. You still might hear this week!

Just wanted to echo this as someone who used to work in financial aid! Spring break made no difference to the running of the office/the release of financial aid awards, at least where I worked.

After doing some google searches, I couldn’t seem to find any information on how much people have saved for graduate school - I have worked for two years after undergrad and managed to save around $25,000 in savings - I will be attending a traditional two year graduate school program .I’m pretty sure I will be taking the Max. Federal loans out to pay for tuition but wanted to garner thoughts on how much people have saved for cost of living/room and board and what people expect is a good ballpark for savings. Thanks for your help - finances are freaking me out a bit.

Thank you so much! Are you planning on attending on 3/23? If I get in, I don't think I can get PTO approved from work in time before then 🙁 but that just means I will be eagerly reading other people's notes!

I haven't been able to find anyone on the forum who applied to the same program as me - I am hoping for UNC's Public Health Leadership Residential MPH. I was a late applicant (submitted 2/3) so I know I have to be a bit more patient, but I'm hopeful it will be in the next 2 weeks! I did hear that next week is their Spring Break though so I'm guessing not next week...

Since I'm attending graduate school right out of undergrad, my savings are at $0.00. That's why the lowest cost option program for me is the best choice because I don't want enormous debt before starting my career.
