MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Colorado contacted me to let me know they didn't receive a transcript from the school I studied abroad at.
Do schools typically need this info? Grades and courses for that semester are on my undergrad transcript, and the only way to get a copy of my transcript (even unofficial) from my host school is to physically pick it up... so that won't be happening, lol

If the courses and grades are listed on your US transcript, then typically I have heard that they don't need the other transcript. Maybe you should reach out to them asking whether it is still required since those courses that you studied abroad are listed on the transcript. I would suggest speaking to them over the phone. Sometimes they may be unaware that it is listed on the latest transcript and are going based on what SOPHAS sends them.

I haven't seen too many folks on here who applied to University of Washington (Seattle). I applied to their Epi program and it's one of my top choices. Does anyone know when they typically release decisions?

I am!! From their portal, it seems to be by the end of February? I'm not sure if that means they'll release all the decisions then or if it's supposed to start trickling in at some point earlier?

Emailed NYU a couple days ago inquiring about decision timeline as I've been under review for two months now... No reply yet so hopefully this means they're busy reviewing applications lol
From experience with NYU I got more of an answer from the websites chat box function than email!

I emailed back explaining my predicament, so hopefully they get back to me!
Yes, you need transcripts for all schools that you got your grades from. This is why some people end up sending 5-6 transcripts bc they have a few grad degrees which have courses linked to other schools, etc. 😅
Ugh, there is literally no way for me to get one- I studied abroad in a tiny Pacific Island country and they don't do electronic transcripts. When my school (undergrad) received my transcript upon my return, it took over four months. Everything I consulted before I started this process said that if the courses are on my US transcript it shouldn't be a problem, so hopefully they just overlooked those courses on my transcript!

It depends. You should read through SOPHAS and their transcript requirements for study abroad. I studied abroad through a foreign program (DIS) where you don't need to send the transcript through that program, but it does need to be on an US official transcript (it's on my undergrad university transcript). I didn't list the study abroad program in SOPHAS because of this, and instead in transcript entry noted the study abroad courses. IF you listed the study abroad program as a school in SOPHAS, the system may still expect a transcript from you (and schools may still expect that transcript).

It is very confusing, but hopefully that helps?

Anyone else still waiting for Columbia and Emory? I’m EH for both and I’m nervous. My GPA is low, like a 2.8 but I have solid LORs and a good SoP. I also have a lot of volunteer activities. I’m also a military veteran and currently serving.

also, I have a few rejections so far but applied to like 14 schools. Is it possible that I will get rejected from ALL of them. God I’m so nervous.
I just received my acceptance today for Emory for EH. I also have a low GPA so that was my main concern as well.
I'm no expert but based off me looking at the threads for MPH apps from 2020 and 2019 I BARELY saw anyone denied from Emory. Obviously things could be different this year especially since there are applicants who deferred from 2020 to start this fall. When I attended EH department info session, they seems very willing to take questions and since the dept is reviewing the apps they may give you more insight than just the general admissions people.

It helps a lot! I did something similar to you, in that my study abroad courses are on my US transcript, and my host instition was not listed as an additional school. Hoping they just overlooked that part!

Maybe I'm just still in disbelief but has anyone else who was accepted to Columbia not received an email from them? I found out via the portal and it is still there (thank god haha) but I would assume I would have gotten some sort of email from them! I got in to the Epi MPH by the way!

Is there a professional in-person pick up mail delivery service or something like that?

Some programs are very strict. They require all transcripts.

I just received an "Application Complete" email from Yale which also let me know I have been moved to the review process. I submitted to SOPHAS 12/14, app was marked as received 12/17, and was marked complete 1/20. Wondering if it also took ~1 month for other Yale applicants to be marked complete and move on to review?

Thought this entire time I was already under review but must have gotten my info. mixed up!

Yup. I submitted 11/28 and got the email for complete 12/23.

After reading through the thread, I'm wondering if anyone could give me advice on if I should submit an addendum addressing my GPA? I have a 3.17 sophas verified GPA, major GPA is 3.5 (health sciences). The reason its so low is that I had a really bad sophomore year, I failed a class and had to retake a course. I did poorly for no reason, I just was having a hard time adjusting to living off campus and was unmotivated. I didn't address it before because there isn't a reason for the bad grades. But since then my grades increased each year, showing an upward trajectory and I got a 3.9 in my final year. Is the failed course worth addressing?

They can mail it, but again that takes about four months to reach the US and is incredibly expensive. While I was there, I had one thing mailed to me- it cost close to $400 usd and when it was mailed they "could not guarantee" it would reach me- point just being about how unreliable mail in/out that country can be. No other school has asked me for this, so I'm assuming it's an error on their part. If they reject me for it, is what it is!

Thank you guys. This whole process has me questioning the strength of my application. COVID has ruined a lot of potential interactions I've could've had with professors. Should I've taken the GRE? I also thought about taking the GRE but decided against it because programs were making it waiver able.

Has anyone heard back from JHU MSPH in Global EPI?

Do you mind if I ask which program? Part of the reason I'm a little bewildered by this is that I've applied to more selective programs and haven't heard this from any of the others. Then again, it could just be early.

I prefer to not tell because I just dont want to affect that program in any way. I ended up abandoning my app with them.

anyone know what it means if an application status on sophas says "manual"

@Spartacous1 Please do not stress on this at all, it's just not worth it. Should there be the highly unlikely event that you do not get accepted into any of the schools that you applied for, strengthen your application for next year. That is something that seemed to have worked for me. I have an undergrad in engineering and masters a business management, and far from anything to do with public health.

But, I am currently enrolled in a grad. cert. program in PH and taking classes in epi, bios and others, to show my passion and commitment towards learning PH, and I think I found my purpose in life. By the way, my GRE scores aren't worth submitting. Forget that, I would not even show it my asian dad (if he was alive)! Nevertheless, I got into 2 good schools.

You have given it your best shot! I do not think you give up on yourself just because of what happens now. Any "disappointment" this year, will only make you come back stronger the next!

I applied with a 3.097 and a 2.7 major GPA and got my first acceptance (Columbia) yesterday! Don't worry they're holistic!

I didn't bother to address it either because mine was also terrible adjustment and hating my major.

Very wise advice.

I would like to also add that in the very highly unlikely event that you dont get accepted anywhere this year, arrange time to meet adcoms of several programs early on. Email them your resume and personal statement before meeting them so they will have a chance to take a closer look at your stats. Ask them what you can do to improve your chances of admissions, given your stats. Be sure to follow up with them throughout the year up to your admissions.

When it comes to grad admissions, it is not all about your grades. It is about you as a person and your interest in the field. This is especially true for the field of public health.

There are different ways you can bring up your gpa. One of the ways is to enroll in classes at a comm. College. Take some public health courses, math, or even stats to strengthen your app for next cycle. Talk to adcoms about this, ask for advice, act on their advice, follow up to show them that you acted on their advice and ask for more advice, repeat the same process until you get admitted.

Best wishes.

Just got an email from Columbia. Apparently, one of my LORs was cutoff at the bottom and they wanted me to reach out to the professor directly and have them submit the letter. They said after that, they can complete my review and send me a decision.

I just emailed the professor.

I also still have not gotten an email but was accepted at about 10:00 this morning.

I'm thinking HPM admissions might come later than the other departments because as far as I know they are the only department that is conducting interviews. Maybe they will release decisions when they are done with the interview process?
I was accepted at like 10am today for the HPM program, so I assume decisions are starting to roll out!
