MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OMG you all are CHATTY! lol
I came back after a day and it's been 10 pages.
Columbia just sent out a short email to apologize for the mistake. Anyone else got it?

As someone who actually is in the medical field, my only advice to ssabrina is to talk directly to admissions office at several med schools. I dont know about elsewhere, but med schools in CA (LA region) will primarily base your gpa on undergrad years because we all know grad school's gpa is very inflating. That info was directly told to us by the admissions office when we went through the process. Therefore, ssabrina should definitely talk to the admissions office at some med schools bc her situation is about online vs on-campus mph, potential hands-on projects at the med school vs ...?,

My whole post was 99% for @ssabrina and 1% of saying I disagree. Of course ssabrina can talk to anyone, including various admissions offices. My advice was in response to their dilemma, not to dismiss that specific advice of contacting admissions.

Sounds like we're both in the medical field... I think being a medical student qualifies as "actually in the medical field" as well 😉 I didn't even mention you specifically in my post at all lol
I am not going to engage in an anonymous petty online battle about whose opinion reigns supreme due to whatever street creds we have. Byeeeeeeeeeeeee 👋👋👋

If ssabrina or others have question, feel free to message me!

For anyone who applied and was accepted to NYU, how long did it take to hear back and which concentration? Thank you!!

For people who were accepted into BU where did you see the scholarship amount?

I checked my portal (which I didn't even know I had) and it said "Congratulations on your acceptance, [my name]". Didn't get any email notification so I'm not celebrating just yet.
This happened the last few times people got decisions and they were accurate. I just wanna see my scholarship lol 😂

You should try the link above that’s I what I did and found out I was accepted today. Applied 1/15 routed for review 1/27
Thanks! I’ve been checking and nothing 🙁 also I was routed for review on 1/29 (after having to email them) -_- so maybe early next week I’ll hear back 😢

I emailed Columbia about being a priority applicant that should hear back by end of January but now they just emailed again saying that I should receive a decision no later than March 1st (separate email than the one about portal mistake that was for everyone). I just thought priority applicants hear back earlier than that.

I’m with you I got my GWU awards letter yesterday saying no merit scholarships feeling ~defeated~ because I got 30% from BU
yeah idk what they look at i asked

This group is on fire!!! 30 minutes, 30 members already. Looking at the diversity of profiles, I am both, amazed and humbled!!!

I am loving the fact that so many people have joined the group. Up to 85 now.

As everyone is making their decisions, I'm trying to decide between BU (still waiting on the formal email with scholarships) and JHU MPH part-time/online. Both programs are fantastic and I'm hoping to do a mix of online classes and school part-time while doing research at my current job at a big hospital in Boston full-time. BU is convenient solely due to location and possibly financial aid wise, but JHU is THE top dream program. My plan if committed to JHU was to do the first year or so completing my core classes online part time while working in Boston (lol I psychotically mapped out which classes I could take online vs on campus) and then move to Baltimore to finish the rest of my degree in person, which I'm not sure is insane or not. I'm planning on applying to medical school later and the JHU name and connections would really help in combination with my great hospital job not going to lie. If anyone has any advice on how they've been making their decisions or how I can get closer to a decision please help haha I've been making pro-con lists all day trying to figure it out haha

This is a situation I am considering as well. As I continue to hear back from schools, I know my MPH won’t be my terminal degree as I’m hoping to apply to med school this upcoming cycle. These are the things I’m considering that might be helpful to you as you figure out finances and etc.:

1) When do you plan to apply and matriculate to medical school?
2) How are your stats so far? Would your app be considered competitive without your MPH?
3) Do you want to go to medical school at any of your MPH schools?

JHU is also my top choice for MPH, but I also wouldn’t mind going to my state program because it’s tied with a decent medical school and I would save money lol. I’ve been told the JHU connections can be quite useful— at least, that’s what I’ve heard from an MS3 who took a research year. He said it helped him match into an emergency medicine residency he otherwise was not very competitive to due to borderline STEP 1 scores (before they went P/F). But I have also seen and been told that your connections, which can be made during your MPH, are also useful if you plan to attend medical school there too.

Just my two cents from going through this journey with my partner who is an untraditional medical student. I see we have some various first-person medical student opinions which are so good to have as well!

My says the same thing. Did it mention any scholarship info?
Not really, just a generic statement saying that my scholarship (don't know if it's actually saying I will get one though) and other financial awards from the school are secure.

People have been saying that it may vary by department. I applied to Yale HPM back in October (application complete November) and I still haven't heard anything.

@Sunshine2021 @KaramazovB @Pwny

Thank you so much for all of your inputs! They've been really helpful and I appreciate what you've all said and all your different takes really help me think from multiple perspectives! I have a lot to think through this is gonna be stressful haha

Does anyone have an idea of what school there mostly going to?
lol i was leaning towards gw idk now but i also have connections and could get a job to offset costs? it’s difficult to decide honestly

I am honestly shocked they didn't give you anything, your stats are so good!!! Definitely ask and see if there is anything they can do. But yeah apply for jobs in DC. A lot of companies here offer some form of tuition reimbursement so that can certainly help, if all else fails.
😭 yeah i’m definitely gonna look into it - i have no idea if they’ll even answer my email.

Keep us updated! I'm not quite at the point you are (still waiting to hear back from JHU and others), but will likely be more in your mindset in the weeks to come haha. Congrats on your acceptance to JHU!

Pretty sure I will be going to Columbia unless I get into Brown and they give me a lot of aid! I'm still waiting to hear back from UCLA and UMD as well but I'm hoping to work in either New York or London after graduation so I think Columbia will be the best school for what I want to do. Would probably go to either school if I get in with a lot of aid as well over Columbia but we'll see. I can live with family if I go to Columbia but can't do that at the other schools which saves a lot.

Feeling really discouraged right now, my SOPHAS application was verified 11/25 and my supplemental for Boston was filled out at the same time. My application didn’t go into review until 1/27 and people who applied in january on here for MCH got acceptances already. i’m getting so worried and frustrated that i haven’t heard anything🥺🥺

Has anyone heard back from Johns Hopkins 11-month (regular, in person) MPH? If not, any clue on when we'll find out - I don't see a time on their site.
I heard back on Wednesday! Applied 11/23 I think.
