MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Found it! For all those that are wondering the same thing, this is what I found earlier in this thread.

I read somewhere that applications are ranked based on some algorithm and only the top 20% of applications are reviewed each Wednesday. Presumably your application will only be reviewed when you fall into the top 20% of the current applicant pool, which somewhat undermines the apply early motif (seeing as how someone with excellent stats that applies late will be reviewed before someone who applies early with poorer stats). Anyhow, this likely explains why acceptances are being given out of sequences.

I'm not sure how the ~20% reviewed undermines the idea of applying early. You have basically contradicted yourself and explained exactly why it is important to apply early. If you have low stats and apply late, you have minimal chances of acceptance compared to an identical applicant who is available for review on Wednesday #1.

It's a rolling cycle and applying early gives you a huge advantage.

Yes yes, I understand. I just took that paragraph from earlier in the thread. Those are not my opinions; should have clarified.

I'm hoping I hear something from them soon. I've been complete since the beginning of August and no word yet. 31 MCAT and a 3.5 cGPA. This waiting is no fun!

I'm in the same boat with similar stats. We'll hear soon!!!

I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned what site they are confirmed to. They sent some site confirmations out on the 25th.

btw: The adcom meets Wednesdays 8a-10:30a, so your acceptances won't arrive any earlier than 11am.

Hi and congrats to all who have been offered a spot at MSUCOM! I am a US citizen but not a Michigan resident and am trying to figure out what funding options exist for out of state (OOS) students, other than loans. Someone mentioned that many OOS-ers are offered scholarships that basically put tuition at in state levels. Does anyone have information about that? How are you all (in state or OOS) planning to finance med school???

also, based on a quick review of the new curriculum, it looks like MSUCOM students won't have a summer off after 1st year. Am I reading that wrong??

I think those were for people who deferred last year.

I've been complete since 9/22 (that's when my final LOR was received). I'm wondering how long it took people to hear back from MSUCOM? I know it's late in the game to get a confirmation, but I honestly got things out as soon as possible (late may MCAT).

I was thinking of calling and asking about the status of my application, but I don't know if this is considered rude or pushy.

advice?

You should definitely call them. It's been more than a month since you submitted your application. It would show your interest.

If you look through the thread you'll see a number of individuals discussing how long it took for people to hear back from MSUCOM. It's not THAT late in the game...people will continue to hear acceptances up until the beginning of orientation. Be patient. The waiting game sucks, but you'll eventually hear back. Some people have heard back within a couple weeks, and for others it took a number of months. I wasn't complete until mid October last year and was accepted early-mid December.

It's probably because they are getting a lot of apps now, but I don't see harm in calling to see if you are complete.

so its 11:30
anybody hear anything yet?
I havent...:-s
Pleaseeeee let it be this wednesdayyyyyy :xf:
been complete since 2 months now 🙁

Just got rejected from MSU CHM (MD program), that being said, I probably won't be getting any love from COM. 🙁. I suppose there is still hope though. I need this!!! lol

So........
My secondary has been complete since 8/11/11
3.52 cGPA
3.44 sGPA
28 MCAT
~600 hours of volunteering
MI resident
3.5 or 4.0 in basically all upper level science classes

I know my volunteering is lower. Do you think that is what's holding me back/do you think I still have a chance?

Any other thoughts??? Thanks!

I've been complete since 8/23 with similar stats. It's still early in the game so we still have a good chance. I wish it would happen sooner than later though 🙂

Your volunteering isn't low (in general), but I spoke to admissions a couple years ago when I still attended MSU and people usually have 1000 hours or more at MSUCOM. Whether or not people are truthful about their hours is something I can't comment on (I was truthful on my application, but you never know).

I called today to double check about the status of my app (been complete for over a month now) they said that if you got the completion email that you just have to wait and there is really nothing you can do.

I'm gonna start looking for jobs

Accepted! Super happy!

First acceptance, and I was thinking the MSUCOM boat had sailed without me. Congrats to those others accepted today. To those not getting the email, maintain hope. I think they keep doing this Wednesday notification thing through the new year, and maybe longer. 😀😀😀😀

Also 8 years of direct patient care in EMS, and teaching A&P at a local college.

anyone interested in the DO/pHD program??

the 8+ years seem long...esp as a mature candidate

Accepted!

GPA - 3.4/3.6 BS Neuroscience from the University of Michigan
Work/Volunteer - only in the hundreds; but I do work as a ER scribe at Henry Ford currently.

I did too!!! I'm so excited/surprised/relieved right now! =) Received the email at 12:38pm. Good luck to those of you still waiting. Stay positive!

Dude, either that was Eastern time or you traveled to the future and back to check your email! Either way, congrats!

Hahaha no I'm just a ***** but I'll blame it on just getting back from Chicago and my excitement...

but thank you and congrats to you as well!

For those who have gone to the visit day in October, can you describe how the day went? Also, did you dress up as if you were going to an interview or was it more casual?

I wonder if canadians are eligible for further scholarships on top of the $20k/year. Can we apply for the OOS scholarship?

The day is informal. Some people were dressed up and others in jeans. Basically they will talk about the curriculum, matching and professionalism. The tour is basically of the OMM rooms and some classrooms. We didn't go upstairs where the Simulation clinic was. The student tour guides also spend time and answer questions after the tour.

Dr. Falls would be the one to email regarding scholarships. I don't think Canadians are eligible for OOS ones but there may be some general scholarships with no residency stipulations.

Hey guys,

MSU-COM is my first and only choice. I am currently doing my undergrad in MSU. My stats are sciGpa: 3.21, NonSci-GPA: 3.61 and total GPA: 3.36. I have 820 hrs of volunteering and 2 years of research experience. My MCAT is 23P and 26N (11PS, 9BS, 6V). I was complete on Oct 3rd. I know I am late in the cycle and with low stats, I am really freaking out.... Any thoughts would be helpful.....

I think you still have a chance for this year, especially the possibility of a waitlist offer...but if you don't get in this year try again next year but much earlier..for me having to reapply gave me some clarity and kind of humbled me and I think that was reflected in my new application.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your advice. I really hope I hear back from them soon. Do you think it would be helpful to make an appointment with the admissions at this point in application cycle?

I don't think it will hurt you to talk to them...but meeting with them won't give you a leg up this year as far as I know. I met with Katie Molina early this summer to talk about my reapplication and she was very honest and helpful and encouraging. If you don't get in this cycle I would definitely recommend meeting with her.

The frustrating thing about MSU is that you really don't get a rejection until the end of the cycle....at least I didn't. After my secondary was complete last year I didn't hear anything until the morning of my last day of undergrad (mid-April)...I mean I pretty much figured it wasn't gonna happen after March came and went, but waiting for a rejection was a little depressing.

Accepted! Super happy!
-IS Nontrad
-3.6/3.7, Biology from U of M, 3.8 MS (will finish next month)
-31Q
-Complete 8/19

BTW, Congrats!

maybe they won't have room for guests or something. i dont know lol

i had a similar question prior to my visit. when i asked them over the phone, the lady said she wouldn't recommend bringing along family. but then the lady who greeted us at the door said everyone's welcome! about room, they do have room, lots of it. but mostly, there were just students there.

So since the site selection process is different this year....does it not matter when you send your acceptance application and $1050 deposit (as long as it's before the deadline)? Or should you still send it in ASAP?

There is no other schools!! LOL I withdrew all other apps!
