I hope it didn't sound like MSUCOM is my backup plan. It's definitely not. I just have to play this application game to the end with all the schools I applied to before I settle into a decision. I'm truly honored and grateful to have been accepted to MSUCOM. It's an amazing school.
 
I received a non-resident student scholarship today from MSUCOM (12.5k for fall and 12k for spring semester), but that only brings down the OOS tuition to about 54k. However, I remembering hearing several people on SDN claim that the school can lower the OOS tuition to something close to the IS rate (37k). Anyone know how that's possible, or is that simply an exaggeration?

This was my first choice school. Received a Rejection today.

And I was in-state too.
I thought they didnt reject people till the end.

Just want to jump off a building right now. This is the most depressing letter in my hand right now

Yes I applied to other schools. I've received rejections/holds from most of them. But yes I do have an interview at LMU coming up in 3 weeks. It's my only shot now.

IS is 37k??? I thought it was 32k per year

Stolis, how do you apply for the non-resident scholarship? Was it automatically given to you based on your stats? (would you mind sharing them?)

I would like to hear about lowering the tuition rate for non-residents to IS rate also, please. Any current students not from Michigan care to share?

I didn't apply for the non-resident scholarship. I'm assuming it's given out based solely on your application, since I didn't provide the school with any financial information.

got accepted a few weeks ago
trying to decide between which site I want to attend. Is there a thread about pro's and con's of each site? If not, can someone comment on that?
 
in terms of living costs, is there any significant difference between the three sites?

Hey I also applied here and its my number 1 choice....I'm also a Michigan resident and was complete on 10/18. I was just wondering how you recieved the letter. Did it come in the mail?
When were u complete again?

Speaking as someone who went to EL for undergrad and grew up in the metro detroit area....

Macomb is probably your cheapest bet. I have friends who rent in the area who pay as little as $300 for their own bedroom/bathroom set up. That being said, you have to take parking and car fees into consideration. I don't know anyone who lives in that area who doesn't own a car so...might add to your fees if you don't have one.

I've never lived in Detroit, but the apartment complex I'm looking at on the river is around ~550 to 600 per person (with my own bedroom/bathroom).

I lived in some pretty ****ty places in East Lansing for around $300-400 but those are in the undergrad areas which are noisy and usually kind of run down. A decent apartment in EL will probably be in the $450-650 range.

Of course if you opt to share a bedroom/bathroom with someone then your costs will go down considerably.

Personally I prefer to have my own space. Also I've been living in DC for 2 years so a $600 rent sounds pretty good when you're paying $1400 to live in a tiny apartment.
 
So would you say that, taking into account the need for a car, that the cheapest place to live would be detroit?
 
I was thinking because you could find an apartment near DMC, there would be no need for a car.

Most of the people that live near the DMC campus do still use a car (by close I mean in midtown, some live downtown too). However, I do know of others that ride their bike to school. It is an opinion, with a lot of the viable apartments around.

I wouldn't live in Detroit without a car. It's not a pedestrian/biker friendly city. Also, you would probably need a car to get groceries.

If you don't have a car your best bet is probably East Lansing. The buses there are decent and although the campus is big, there are a number of apartments within a 10min walk of Fee Hall
 
I declined the acceptance offer and withdrew my application today...So another spot opened up for another applicant..good luck everyone 😍😍

+1 to really needing a car in Detroit. Like I said I have classmates that ride their bike to school, but for other things a car makes things very convenient. Unfortunately the same thing can be said for EL and Macomb in regards to needing a car to get around to other things besides school. Michigan doesn't have much to offer in regards to mass transit in general.

So I'm hoping to get some support, but I was late applying.
Was completed late October.
3.64/3.2 gpa
25 MCAT
1900 volunteer experience
Lots and lots of research, 2 first authored published papers in journal of molecular breeding, and diabetes.
Hopefully I will be meeting Dr. McCormick in the next couple weeks for an interview!

Also I have quite a bit of insight on the admissions process, this is my second time applying, and I have tirelessly visited and revisited advising.
This is what the lady told me when I saw her for advising in August
So every applicant is ranked once your secondary is complete:
-40% of the weight is given to volunteer hours (advisor had told me that last year the average number of hours was 1600).
-40% is grades/gpa
-20% is MCAT

Its been mentioned before, but seriously MSUCOM wants to see volunteer hours, anything and everything!
 
Word on the street is the class is full, and they are slowly releasing the acceptances.

Detroit doesn't have very many places to buy groceries.

not everyone that has been accepted will be going for sure, so if you want to go to com, send it in! seats will open back up.

I thought the average volunteer hours was 800!!
 
800 what they recommend and often state as their minimum. I do think it a bit ridiculous. She had told me to put down anything from helping an old lady carry groceries to her car, to volunteering to drive siblings to school, etc.
It just seems silly, b/c so there is no way someone can officially account for these hours. So I bet a lot of ppl just made up a bunch of stuff

...That is the point. However, Detroit does have more groceries stores than you would think, good ones too. They just aren't big chain ones, although there will be a Whole Foods in midtown in 2013.

It is a bit ridiculous, but apparently the incoming class has an average of 2000 hrs of community... so who knows.

Also the class is technically full at this point, but people do drop out and others get put on the wait-list. So if you are still waiting to hear back there is still a chance you could be contacted.

They tell us these things at class meetings. I wouldn't worry there is always a lot of movement the rest of the year with people withdrawing and such.
 
Just out of curiosity, it sounds like they might have sent out rejection letters. Has anyone else received one? I thought they usually waited until the end of the cycle. Thanks!

So I am formally depressed right now🙁 I find it frustrating the system and I guess I should have put every ounce of volunteering I did down and not relied on decent stats and almost 10yrs of health care experience and a MI resident.

So I'd agree it sounds like some rejections have gone out, anyone now how to find out if your waitlisted and where at on that list. Can you update your app if you've done new things to improve chances?

I guess moving is around the corner. 😕
 
Does anyone know whether or not I would be able to extend my deadline to reply to an offer of admission to MSUCOM? Dec 1st is the deadline, but I'd like to extend it for a week or so for personal reasons.
