MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It makes sense that they would choose to do it differently because of this though. What other reason could they have to wait to place people? That is not rhetorical question. I am legitimately asking.

Simply because they don't give any benefits or remote concern for those with families, spouses, kids, houses, etc. You will see this when it comes time for base hospital choices.

Believe me, I would be happily proved wrong if it's for preference for those with families, etc. However I would guess they are actually doing it for reduction of administration work.

hey all

I came across this video, it gives the aerial view of MSU EL campus. I thought it's pretty cool!

That's too bad. I was really hoping they would give preference to those with family, etc. How are base hospitals placements given?

I had mine completed in July as well! Still waiting!

Good luck everyone! I signed up for the campus visit Oct 28. Hope to see some of you there.

Ready for tomorrow everyone?

Nothing yet here! I'm really hoping today is the lucky day.

Last week they came out around 1:30 (with a few in the morning for Canadian students) so good luck everyone! 👍

Congrats to everyone with acceptances! I'm a 4th year at MSU COM and I've been extremely happy with the education that I've received.

Each base hospital has a set number of positions. Everyone goes through an online system to request one base hospital. If too many people choose the same hospital, then that hospital goes to lottery. Whoever "loses" in the lottery gets to choose from the hospitals that didn't fill. Occasionally, people have to participate in multiple rounds of the lottery if their subsequent choices are also popular. You can apply for special consideration which allows you to pick your hospital without participating in the lottery, but you need to have a good reason. Good reasons that I'm aware of include have included a child with special medical or educational needs.

I know it's been posted before, but I can't find it -- how does the application committee rank their applications for review?

My cGPA is not phenomenal (extensive medical issue my junior year), but my MCAT this year, 8 years out of undergrad, was a 32T, so I'm crossing my fingers that they take that into account and bump mine up a little. Oh yes, and I'm in-state.

Congrats to everyone accepted! If I am blessed enough to join you, I don't care which campus I get -- the single with no kids thing has an advantage. 🙂

how long do you have before you have to confirm your acceptance?

"• Those accepted prior to November 2 will have
until December 1
• Those accepted between November 2 and January 14 will have 30 days"

Taken from page 47 of the Osteopathic Medical College Information Book. Basically the MSAR for DO schools. Download it. Its free...

If your application is solid, go ahead and apply! I think there is a link to an eval (MSUCOM's "LOR") somewhere in this thread so you can get it to your two letter writers (they can be anyone that knows you well--you don't have to have a DO writer). I wasn't complete until late October last cycle and was accepted a little after Thanksgiving. Good luck! 🙂

I'm just wondering, for the people that have been accepted, how are you planning on financing your education? Does the school itself give out loans? Tuition for Canadians I think is around 53k/year.
