MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Alright...but I'm still convinced that only I can think of such a unique and genius profile

Haha my thoughts exactly on myself. I originally had my actual name but figured that was a bad idea. My life revolves around med school applications and my cat (sad to some I know lol) so it's pretty much the only thing I could come up with! plus....i really like the doctor cat cartoon. sorry! 😳

I received an email yesterday, I've been put on the waitlist🙁
Does anybody know how the waitlist works? How quickly it moves? Is there anything I can do to help my chances? Any info would be appreciated!

Does it say you are in the high waitlist? I've heard from last year that high waitlist means if you dont get off, then you are guarenteed admission for the next year. I also heard that rarely anyone gets off the low waitlist because they come after the high waitlist people.

Hello! How long did it take for people to hear about admission and/or waitlisting once their secondaries were complete?

I sent my secondary ~ second week of September, and got accepted 2 weeks later.

When did you submit your secondary if you don't mind me asking?

I submitted my secondary the first week of September and was complete within 3 days. I got accepted the first Wednesday in October. Last year I was complete Nov. 29th and got my "rejection" the last week in April. In my experience things really slow down at this point until March and April when the waitlist movement really picks up.

Turned secondary in Oct 10, it got verified Oct. 11 and I was accepted Oct. 19. Crazy :O

Hey guys, does anyone have an idea of how full the class is? I just received my seconday today and should have it all mailed by the end of the week. I was just curious of the odds of getting an interview at this point.

There is no interview for MSU and the class is supposedly, full--but that doesn't mean that everyone offered an acceptance will take it.

Ahh I didn't know that about the no interview situation. So they merely select you from your secondary without a face-to-face? So there is a high-wait-list category which means there is a high chance of eventually being accepted? I have a 31O with a 3.65 GPA so I'm hoping that with my extracurriculars makes me competitive.

how do you know the class is full already? are you basing this off the current month? i am just wondering. thanks.

high waitlist means you are guaranteed acceptance for c/o 2017 and have a decent chance of being accepted of the waitlist for c/o 2016. Low waitlist has no guaranteed acceptance, and there is supposedly very little movement from that list.

And the first years get updates during their classes about how our class is coming along and they have passed on the info that the class is full, which means it will be waitlisting from here on out I would imagine.

If you get high wait-list and would join the class of 2017, do you get the same offer as the MD school to obtain Michigan residency and then pay for in-state tuition? Thanks

this happens with the MD program? Wow, that would be a nice move for DO. Please keep us posted. Thanks for the info.

No problem, I will have my app submitted soon so I will let everyone know what I hear. I'm guessing it will be quite awhile before I get any news though.

Canadians cannot get US (michigan residency)

nobody has heard anything today? what a sad, slow wednesday 👎

... my application is fully complete as of today (as in, secondary as well)- how does this work? Do they evaluate you based on a wait-list since it's so late into their app cycle? Or are you evaluated, accepted, waitlisted (last) or rejected in a traditional sense?

Someone up there just said the class was full. Is it?

Just a little curious. Thanks amigos.

Congrats to those accepted today.

I'm frustrated I haven't heard one thing either way. I even played my hand to them. I'm excited that I sit with 2-offers and 1-wait list from another school but since this was my first choice I wish they'd either cut me loose or tell me where I stand. I've decided it's probably a no go here but at least I'll be a physician in the end.

Good luck to those still hoping and waiting.

Wow, really? Not a single Michigan residency will sponsor either H1B or J1 visa ? If that is the case, it really sucks.

I'm assuming he's saying that canadians (or really, all f-1 and probably j1 and h1b visa holders) wouldn't be considered michigan residents for tuition purposes

Yes that is what I'm saying. I was assured at the EL visit that visa sponsorship for residencies shouldn't be a problem in MI.

What does that mean for a qualified applicant who's application was totally completed as of this morning (and MSU confirmed)? Are there just no more straight acceptances?

Also, does the committee that evaluates the applications meet all throughout december? God, I feel terrible. My final letter of rec got in today at noon, right after they probably evaluated.

Got my "hi-wait list" email last night! I know it's not an immediate admission, but I'm at least gauranteed for c/o 2017! We'll see how my interview goes at Midwestern in AZ. If I don't get in there, then of course it's going to be MSUCOM, but I don't know what i'll do if I get offered acceptance to AZ. Good luck to all those still waiting - it took me over two months to hear back from MSUCOM. Don't give up hope!

Mind if I ask your stats? 🙂 I'd like to get a feel of what you would need to be on the high waitlist...

Hotandcold, that would probably mean you would get a high waitlist spot...although someone on here got a straight acceptance today so there must have been at least one spot open...I'm assuming maybe some people dropped before the December 1st deadline? Last year the committee met at least 2 weeks our of december but didn't meet all month due to the holidays, I think there was a snow day in there somewhere too. I'm pretty sure they still meet until at least March deciding on waitlist positions, even well after the class is full. I was complete Nov 30th of last year with a decently qualified app (good enough to be accepted this year) and I didn't hear anything until April when I was given the thanks but we are full email.

With Rolling admissions applying early is key.

Thanks! I'm a tad bit hopeful, but have a great contingency plan for occupying myself next year. I figure if I apply early next year (right when I can) I should be set- just circumstances. And there's always a chance I get a high waitlist and lock in for the c/o 2017.

I did contact MSU, and they said that next week's December 14th will be the adcom's last meeting of the year. Meetings are going to resume mid January. <--- just for anyone who wants to know.

I got my high-waitlist email yesterday! At least I know I have somewhere to go if I don't get into any other schools.
Congrats! Wish you the best of luck with the rest of your schools.
:xf:For next week's review.

3.5s GPA
3.38c GPA
Extreme upward trend (first year GPA was 1.4 - I was a lost soul)
28M MCAT
2 years part-time/full-time work in ICU and OB
Lot's of EC's (500+ hrs) including volunteer work
Got my application in Oct 3rd

I don't know if family situations played a part in the decision, but I am married with a 16-month-old daughter; I put that as an emphasis on my application. I think I heard somewhere that family situations factor in.

hey guys..did anyone get the enrollment letter yet, after submitting the paperwork and acceptance deposit??

Is there an enrollment letter? Does it have anything important in it we have to turn in or something? I got this email after submitting my things
"Hi everyone.

I am sending you a link that you should keep and bookmark for future reference. Please note that this link is your source for any upcoming information, important dates, information needed, etc.

I am fortunate to have admission offer from MSUCOM this year. I need to indicate my preference for campus location. What are the differences between the locations?

I have to pick between:
East Lansing, Detroit Medical Center and Macomb Center

@DrMeowMeow: heyyy, yea i got this same email... the enrollment letter's mentioned in the welcome letter on this link...so I just thought of asking you guys if any of you had already received it... i wud need it for finalizing my loan...

btw, i'm in suchh a lazy mode nowadays... i've taken an online course, just can't make myself start studying:scared:anyone else on the same boat? =P

@canadanon: other than the location itself, and class size, no other major differences i think... macomb and dmc will have around 50 students, and east lansing 200...

Loan? I thought you can't fill out the FAFSA until January. And yes I am having trouble focusing now that I know it's not the end of the world if I don't get all As.

yepp...i'm also following the "minimum C grade" point quite seriously...

oh, no FAFSA for me.. i'm canadian...so the bank loan hassles.. =(

Congrats to everyone that's been accepted so far! 😀👍😀

Quick Question (or two):
Have any of you received acceptances even though you haven't finished all of the pre-reqs yet? And do you know what kind of Biochem course they require? My school has a "Fundamentals of Biochemistry" course that I was thinking about taking for the Biochem pre-req.

yep, i did get acceptance w/o finishing all the prereqs... i think just about any biochem course, with the "biochem" in the title would meet the biochem requirement..just email and ask them if the course ur describing will be ok..
