MSUCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay! They finally processed my LOR's and am officially complete!!!! Only took 2.5 weeks, but I'm complete!!!!!

Oh, and I am sure they are offering admission to people every week, we just don't hear about it.

Thanks

You're words are so comforting for all of us who are waiting anxiously! :barf:

i'm sort of confused. I heard that MSUCOM ( from MSUCOM admissions ) had stopped doing interviews - and now accepted people based off their application and lor's..is this not true? 😕

They generally dont interview, unless they are uncertain about something and would like to learn more with an interview.

Good news for everyone who is worried about hearing from MSUCOM!

I spoke with the secretary and she said that the committee didn't meet this week. They will meet again on Tuesday the 23rd and we can wait until next week to obsessively refresh our email every 45 seconds.

😛

I wonder if that is because the office staff has been so backed up entering application materials over the last two weeks. That is really good to know though!!!

Thanks HCN! Good work on digging up the info.

If the spartans get 23 off of the osu defense, it will be an act of God. I'm predicting 38 - 10.

🙁 Rejection Letter yesterday arrived in mail. Sigh!!! After I came back from work I checked my mailbox at 930 pm, and Lo and behold there it was. I was angry initially but now I'm just disappointed by the way I was treated. The letter said after a review of my community service, osteopathic interest, academic performance, and interview I was not offered admission. INTERVIEW WHAT INTERVIEW, My wait-list email from last year said I was guaranteed atleast an interview. I atleast thought I would be offered a wait-list spot. I was thinking about calling the associate dean and talking to him what happened? I did everything he had asked me to do. I don't think my MCAT was that bad. I had such high regard for the school, my brother is an alumni, and this was my second year applying there. Well everything happens for a reason right?

I sat on my bed last night holding the letter for 20 minutes as I was completely blindsided with this. Now I have it pinned to my door to remind me everyday to push me. Hopefully I will get an interview and acceptance somewhere (god willing). 😀 Good luck to all you that will be attending there next year I wish all of you guys the best, their faculty is great, and teachers are real caring. I was sick of E Lansing anyway maybe this change will be good. 😎

Life moves fast, what a difference a week makes. I really learned a lot about myself that week when my luck was completely down. Now I am thankful to God that its finally turning around, hopefully for a long time. 😀

I was accepted a few weeks ago. I just replied that I would like to attend. 🙂

Reviving this thread in hopes of GL tomorrow!

Best luck to y'all.
hope we all take the same class next year

great-wait list for me🙁

Are you a Michigan state resident?

yes-with a 26N Mcat, a 3.55 Science GPA, 10000hours of volunteer work and great LORs from DOs.😛

And I don't do the waiting thing very well!

speeter, Do you really think the class is already full? It's only been 2 months... That's not comforting news.

I bet it's close. The stats of those accepted seem higher than their past averages, too. Look at how many are already accepted on the SDN thread. I think if you multiply that by 10 you are pretty close to being full. (I'm assuming 10% of applicants use SDN). I know there are 8 in the facebook group, a few of which are not on sdn.

To fill a class of 210 they will probably offer admission to approximately 350.

how long does it usually take to get a response from them after you are complete?

also, i sent in my secondary and my evaluators sent in their letters at the same time. however, one of my evaluations got lost or something, so everything was complete but one letter of eval. pretty much my app was sitting there for 2 weeks without the second letter of eval. i asked them how that would affect my application and they said it shouldn't. i really hope not.

i also doubt its full. my friend is a first year here and he said it wasn't filled until December when he was applying.

LOL all the seats are not gone. To make all of you feel better the deposit due date is early December, alot of students that are waiting to hear from other schools (ex: wayne, msu-chm) start withdrawing starting December and January. Every year its been like this, all the higher stats people get accepted early to MSUCOM but let go of their seat once they find out from MD schools. The MCAT average for the past 7 or 8 years for MSUCOM has been around 25-26, its NOT going to jump to 29-30 in one year. People get pulled from the wait-list till June, so just have some patience.

Waitlisted with guarantee seat for 2013 class.
oh, well.
Good Luck everyone~

how long does it typically take to hear back from them after your secondary and letters of eval are complete?

Does anyone have friends, or know anyone that was accepted yesterday? You would think the adcom would have send out a whole bunch of emails after being on a 2 week hiatus.

If your application has been complete for several weeks and didn't hear anything yesterday, I highly suggest that you call the admissions office. One of my LORs was lost and the admissions let me know who it was so that I could ask that person. MSUCOM is generally pretty quick about letting people know if they're in or not, waitlisted or interviewed. The staff in the office is extremely nice and helpful.

Also, if you're waitlisted, I wouldn't freak out yet😀. Yes, they probably sent acceptances to around 200 people, but many of them will not be going to MSUCOM. A lot of people in-state apply to both MD programs and MSUCOM (as a back up) and many end up choosing Wayne State, CHM, Toledo, etc., over MSUCOM.

In the end, if MSUCOM is your first choice and you don't get in, ask for an advising appt. Someone from the admissions committee will go over your application with you and tell you your weaknesses. Then you can always try next year! Contrary to popular belief, most first-year med students are not 22 yrs old.

My email came 3 weeks after official completion FWIW.

Yeah, I've already called the admissions office. They informed me that my application was complete, it just hasn't been reviewed yet 😳

I am just hoping to hear back from them before Christmas...hopefully an acceptance...that would make a nice Christmas present.

Did you check your status on their website before calling? I don't want to bother them. It says all my materials are in, and they have my MCAT scores. I don't think anything is wrong. Do you think I should still call?

MSUCOM admissions staff is nice but careless. They make tons of mistakes with applications. Someone posted this on my MDapps profile (I edited the language of course):

"Hey, I got a 41 on my MACT and a 3.9 at MSU, and I was FINALLY accepted to MSUCOM last week after they f*** around with my app. So, fear not, they like f*** with their alma mater grads. You'll get in soon, you've got their cut-off stats of 3.0 and 23MCAT. Maybe we'll be classmates? Good Luck."

LOL what I don't understand is why this guy cares about MSUCOM, he can get into John Hopkins...

17 points my friend, and they held the OSU offense to 24 pts. They came close, so close.....🙁🙁🙁

Did you watch the game? 14 of those 17 were scored by the defense against the second string OSU offense. That game was not as close as the score suggests. I've got nothin but love for MSU though.🙂

If it makes anyone feel any better about waiting, I have some info:
One of the three people on the admission review board (the people that make the ultimate decision on acceptance) told me,
"No news is good news. If you haven't heard anything for several weeks do not be worried, that means your application is competitive, your stats and ECs are right in the mix." It is up to the admissions staff to pick the best applicants (top 25%) during that review week (this can include apps complete in July or those recently completed). Just hope that, you're the most competitive at the time.
For people on waitlists or people reapplying for next year:
Being complete as early as possible is to your benefit. By waiting 5 months in the application process, or longer, you significantly reduce the amount of weeks that you could be in the top running.
I had average stats last year and was complete at the beginning of Dec. No waitlist, no acceptance (they told me in March). I did well in the winter semester (4.0gpa), but still had average stats (continued doing same ECs). Then this year I made sure I was complete asap, I had my primaries done by July, and was complete by the beginning of August. APPLYING EARLY WITH ROLLING ADMISSIONS IS KEY! Good luck there is still a lot of time before June classes start.
:beat: Sorry to beat a dead horse.

MSUCOM Class of 2012

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted to COM! I look forward to meeting you all next year.

In response to questions of has the class filled up yet / average stats, I don't believe it has. The admissions committee had offered only 90 acceptances a little less than a month ago, and the admissions committee is still actively meeting.

The average stats for the Class of 2011 are: 8.67 MCAT, 3.55 GPA.
3017 applicants, 211 students.
195 in state, 16 OOS.
Average age: 24
109 Females, 102 Males

If anybody has any questions about COM, feel free to send me a PM.
Good luck!

I am trying to learn a little more about MSUCOM...
How are their clinics....? I know majority of MSU clinics are scattered all around Michigan (which isn't a bad thing).... But I wanted to know from some of you folks who have visited MSU or are currently attending, how is the clinical experience vs. some of the other schools in the US

I like the school alot, but I want to apply to schools that give thier MS3 & MS4 the most clinical experience.

MSUCOM has very good core hospitals.
