Anyone know anything about Medical University of the Americas. It seemd to be LOTS cheaper than U.S. schools and they have a M.D./ Psy.D program that i have not seen in any U.S. school?

Is this a good school? Descent Rep? Any info would be appreciated

i have heard good things, they are a spin off of saba. saba has done well in a short time, and seems to be a reliable indicator for this school. don't know about the program, but the little i have heard has been all good.

good luck

just as an aside, no matter how good it may be, it is a caribean school. go to a school in the us, or an established med school that has educated the doctors of its country and is affiliated with reasearch and univ hospitals to be sure that you are getting the best education you can. the caribean produces many fine doctors, but i venture to say that it is not the best medical education out there...if that is what you want, stay here, or go to australia, ireland, europe, etc...if you want to get your md and practice, MUA is a great option

How hard is it to get a family practice residency in the U.S. after graduation though?

I've recently been accepted to MUA, to which I decided to apply after several months of research. I plan to go in May '03. While I can't tell you if it's the best school for you, I encourage you to keep an open mind to your options, continue your research, and make a decision that you are comfortable with based on your individual circumstances.
As far as FP, I have been reading a lot of statistical info....which you can view at the match site. (try accessing through AMSA, and similar organizations, I don't have the site at my fingertips at the moment). Anyway, the info. is all there regarding how many FP positions were available over the past several years, including the most recent Match of 2002. It also lists how many positions were filled by US Seniors, and by 'other applicants' which means those med. grads not from the US. That's inclusive of IMG/US, and IMG/non-US students.
The FP and IM positions are hurting for people. There are still plenty of unmatched residencies as I type this....I say this because I just visited the site and printed out the info last night.
From memory (so don't quote me), only about 35-45% of the matches were US grads. The remainder are IMG's and unfilled positions.
Best of luck to your on your research. FYI- as far as Carib. schools go, I've summarized from all my readings that ROSS, ST. GEORGE, AUC, and SABA are top choices. MUA is a newer 'sister' school to SABA and thus could be considered a riskier decision/choice for some, but keep in mind there are pros and cons to each school.

Oh, I found some links for you:
