She got into some new pharmacy school in the east coast or something with a 2.7? Wow, didnt think that was possible. Damn, this gives my other friend hope, he's getting a 2.64.

That'd be considered high in a few years when 20+ more pharm schools open up. By then, they'll start taking people with sub 2.0 gpas or something. With so many more schools popping up, the question is who wouldn't be accepted? Gift cards, rebate coupons, $4 generics, price matches, 1 new school every other week, your friendly neighborhood pharmacist barely hitting 2.0gpa in undergrad...yeah pharmacy is becoming a joke.

Happened to Psychology, happened to Law.

Problem: Too many people on this planet all wanting to do mostly the same thing.

Is this another thread where people complain about how others got into pharmacy school and they didn't?

Someone with a sub-par gpa got in. Big deal. I don't think it warrants a thread on SDN. I will say now, nothing productive will come out of this thread.

Although this doesn't look good for the profession keep in mind that most schools still require above a 3.0 gpa and still have plenty of applicants to choose from.

Or maybe it pisses people off who did get into Pharmacy school that their achievement is slowly becoming tantamount to getting a "Be a Phoenix" flyer in the daily post?

Not happening in medicine, not happening in dentistry

Solution: Number of people wanting to do the same thing should be limited somehow.

this thread is useless

1) did your friend have a BS/BA? competitive/ranked undergrad?
2) what was the PCAT score?
3) what was the trailing GPA for the final 2 years?
4) what was the sGPA?
5) work/research experience?

No, a not-so subtle nod to that thread.

You're not taking this thread seriously, are you?

Um, I'm pretty bad when it comes to reading between the lines...I completely missed the funny in your posts.

UCSF doesn't even require >3.0 GPA... If that's the #1 school of pharmacy in the country and they don't require >3.0, who does?

Okay but whats the average gpa they accept every year 3.6 3.8? Maybe they don't put a cutoff on it because they don't need one. And you know UCSF isn't accepting these students. These 2.7 admits are by far the exception to the rule and it would probably take someone ten years of pharmacy experience with an otherwise impeccable application to pull it off.

As I recall, it's in the 3.6-ish range, but their low-GPA is 2.92, so while they may not accept a low of 2.9-ish range students, it does occur...

I do agree, though, that they're the exception to the rule for now, but whether that's going to remain the same over time is up for debate, isn't it?

What's with threads that start out with boring/so what topics and end up in misplaced passionate pseudo-arguments and fear mongering? You should all be ashamed that you are so bored...

I'm pretty sure that student with the 2.92 was an URM. That's not to say anything bad about it but that is my guess and probably likely. UCSF loves URMs in their program (this is a fact).

I totally agree.

2.7 GPA = not fit for Pharmacy school.

Just IMO as one of the terribly privileged white folk.

It really depends. What if the applicant pulled 3.7+ their last two years of undergrad and got a 90+ PCAT?

maybe i should make a new thread stating that my friend got a 4.0 and didnt get into pharmacy school...gpa is just one thing that schools look at and im pretty sure it happens a few times a year for every school to accept ppl with lower gpa's...and apparently just because this one person got in with a low gpa the conversation of "pharmacy becoming a joke" and "pharmacy will become oversaturated with dumb students" starts again lol

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama all experimented with drugs in their youth and all scored positions as President of The United States of America. But that's not the full story either.

Wow, what an idiot. Talk about judging a book by it's cover.
I just got in with a 2.8. Oh, and I made a 95 on the PCAT had 4yrs of pharmacy work experience and 1yr of volunteer svc. And my GPA in the last two years (when I did most of my science classes) has been 3.6.

So, try to refrain from making sweeping generalizations as you will most likely sound like an idiot again.

This has been bothering me for a bit, but when you say someone got in with say so and so gpa, is that the gpa they have at the time of acceptance? What if you got in, in the fall, and improved your gpa before you graduate...then what gpa did you get in with??

well assuming this person has a low pcat, little exp, etc. What makes you think he/she will even survive in pharmacy school for 3-4 years. Getting into pharmacy school is just 1/4 of the battle to become a pharmacist...im sure ppl like this will get "weeded" out if they are not truly prepared..

This guy is straight trolling on us....

I am pretty tired of all the selfish fear mongering as well.

I can bet my first year's pharmacist salary that the school she got into was University of New England or Albany College of Pharmacy-Vermont?

Am I right????

Yes, you are. I mean she did work 2 yrs as a pharm tech so i dont know how much that counts.

lets not forget that just because someone gets into pharmacy school, doesn't mean they'll survive.

not saying that will happen to this specific person, but if you aren't cut out for this profession it will show.

As long as you work hard, stay informed, and have the patient's best intrest in mind - youll always have a job.

Im not sure what all the fuss is about.

GPA is simply a reflection of their study habits. If they continue with the same study habits through pharmD school, then chances are that they will not pass the NAPLEX or the Law portion to become a RPh...so that takes care of that😉

Yea she got into UNE, most probably, this school is Brand New, No Accreditation, so no Federal Aid, they make 45K/per student a year , so they could careless what GPA is, they know she will not get in anywhere else, thus, she will pay 45K/per year.....COLLEGES ARE BUSINESSES!! Their bottom line is $$$

Does your friend know that you posted this? If she is your friend?

I am going to assume that you are joking.
If not, you are the type of student that doesnt need to be in pharmacy school. Is that how you are gonna look at the URM patients that come into your pharmacy, if you get in?

Lets not tell people they should or should not be in professional schools.
Everyone has a right to their opinion whether we agree with it or not . thats what being open-minded means/

the way i see it, if therapeutics doesn't stop them, naplex will

GPA's are important, but that's not the ONLY determining factor.

A classmate of mine has a 2.7-ish GPA, but it was from YEARS before when he was an engineering major...bad choice for him, but sometimes when you're straight out of high school, you really don't know what you want to do. But when he switched majors to chemistry, he has gotten straight A's from then. Not sure how his pharm school searches went though.........but I thought his situation was understandable

A lot of schools will just look at your GPA to determine whether you get an interview or not. So if your GPA is low, APPLY EARLY. THat way, the schools are more likely to actually read your essay section about the 'descrepencies you want to explain.'

But if you started off with a high GPA and dropped to a low one, I would think that would be VERY bad.
