My GRE score expired!

I took the test 6 years ago in college and got 760v/800q. I thought I'd never take GRE again----even thinking of it makes me want to vomit. But, now I want a career change and apply for clinical psychology in the future.
The ETS does not send score reports older than 5 years. What should I do now? Are PhD programs ok with outdated GRE scores? I don't think I'd ever score that high again.

From what I understand, scores 5 years and older won't even show up on the record form. As far as they know, you may be a completely different person (aptitude wise) between your 760/800 score and now (nice score though). I'm sad to say this, but I think you'll have to take it again.

Yeah, I think myelin is right. I might end up in the same boat with you. My scores aren't quite that good, but acceptable, I think, and I also don't know that I could pull it off again. I'm wondering if my scores would be valid if I hurry and apply this Fall, when I took the GRE in December, 2003. Although I have applied to PhD programs before, right now feels a little like rushing things, or maybe it's just stress and cold feet. I will finish my master's degree this November, and then will be eligible to work as a certified professional counselor intern. That really isn't where I wanted to end up, but it is a lot better than getting $6/hour to get undermined by underqualified supervisors and assaulted by clients in residential treatment.

Sorry for the hijack there. So, if your scores are older than 5 years I think you will need to take the GRE again. I'm hoping that mine will get by for this year, and that I can motivate myself enough to apply this year because next year I would have to take it again for sure. And I don't think that my math brain is functional currently. I get a headache if I try to help my high school daughters with their math homework.

Vomit. Really why?

Even if you scored 200 points lower you would be competitive for nearly every program in the country and the likelihood of you scoring under 1400 is about 0. You are very bright (quite obviously) and this should not be stressful for you at all. Just walk in off the street and take the thing.

Your GRE scores should not be 200 points different, and statistically speaking should be within +/- 100 points of your old score. A 1460+ is good enough to get into ANY program in the country. Stop stressing.

I agree with Mark. While it's PITA to retake the test, your scores should in theory remain consistent. That's the nature of these tests (in theory anyway). I think if you reviewed the materials you'd do fine. You have a lot of wiggle room in terms of going down in score.

I had to retake it as well, though my verbal sucked the first time so I was happy to have them expire 😀 I was able to raise that, and my math stayed roughly the same.
