I am applying for 2009 and wanted some of your thoughts about my particular situation. I initially went into undergrad at an institution ranked in the top 10 party schools every year and this is one of the reasons I wanted to go there. I definitely had a great time but did not do so well in my classes (2.0 gpa according to AADSAS) because I did not study at all and I had a drug problem. I transferred to a small private liberal arts college, stopped using the substances, and eventually graduated cum laude in bio and scored in the 95th percentile on the DAT.

My question is this: I know I may have to explain my previous poor academic performance on supplementals or interviews so should I tell them my substance problem affected my grades or should I keep that one to myself and tell them it was immaturity or something of that sort?

umm don't write down you had a drug problem. Even though you are suppose to feel proud of people who stopped using drugs, but they are going to say, well... why did you use drugs in the first place...

Just write down other things that prevented you from doing well in school. Maturity would be good since it shows clearly that you have matured and graduated with honors and excelled in the DAT.

Drug problem = bad idea...

hey..don't beat yourself up..who hasn't had a drug problem once in a time in their life

lol dont mention it just say you were immature and weren't focused lol.

yea dont mention it especially since as a dentist you will have access to controlled substances....

Did you go to Arizona State?

Yeah, I wouldn't mention it either. If someone truly has a drug "problem" and doesn't just occasionally abuse substances...generally

1. They can't stop cold turkey as you did and
2. Any small temptation may cause them to use again in addict fashion

I can't judge you, but it seems like you just wanted to party but never became addicted (or you would likely still be struggling to stay sober) and so didn't truly have "a problem". Look at it that way.

I think probably 95% of people in here if not 99.5% have abused a substance sometime in their lives without being an addict. Junior year my grades went down because I was going out all the time drinking with my friends. I never had a "problem" ... for that semester for some reason I just didn't care. Don't bring it up. You are responsible for your grades, not the drugs.
