Nbde Part 1 Experience And Score

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just took Part 1 today and thought I would share some words of wisdom that I wish someone would have told me before I took it 🙂 Overall, it wasn't too bad. Lots of basic questions. I mainly used the decks and the First Aid book to study. The decks I think helped a lot more. A few points of interest...
1) Know EVERYTHING about the TMJ. There were TONS of questions about it. Seriously know it like the back of your hand and you'll be fine.
2) I was really suprised with how easy dental anatomy was with the exception of there were a lot of really random details about primary dentention.
3) I really didnt see too many repeat questions from old tests, that kind of suprised me.
4) Apparently there are multiple versions that they give at the same time (my friend and I were talking after we both took it today and we had TONS of different questions)... so dont rely too much on what any one person says.
Overall, don't stress too much. Hopefully my score will reflect my studying. Good luck to everyone taking it soon!! I'm sure you'll do well 🙂

hey guys..i just took my part I today...and i would like to tell you guys straight out what i thought.

1-its not like everybody hasnt said it enough...but DO TMJ....know all ligaments, muscles, compartments..what attatches what....especially Lat pteerygoid and Temporalis...both their heads, where they attatch what they do. I cannot emphasize how much detail they went into...at some points i just wanted to slap my mouse because they just kept going ON AND ON AND ON AND ON about TMJ.
2- adjust ur sleep cycle...i had a habit of studdying late into night (sometimes 4am) and wake up at 11 am......change it!...i caught myself yawning even w/ so much stress...but it wasnt because i was bored, it was because my body wasnt sure what was going on. all that physical inactivity just doesnt help your body stay alert.
3- take breaks...even after 1.5 hrs...take a break, drink water...even if for 3-5 mins.
4- there is more than enough time to attempt the questions. do the easy ones first....if u are even 20-30% unsure about a q...mark it, move on...come back.
also, do not keep going back to the questions.....i can promise u...the more u go back, the more u'll change ur answer...i was sitting at a q for like 5 mins and i was going...a,b,a,b,a,b,a,b,a,b....do not do that.
5- before u begin ur exam....write down eruption/calification/tables/charts on the sheets they give u...that way u wont be wasting 'exam time'
6- do ur basics...do ur basics...do ur basics!...do not go into high fi stuff....seriously, sometimes it just came down to....what tooth is tooth replaces tooth B in primary dentition (not always that easy but just giving an example).and i was like....SERIOUSLY?
7- eat well, sleep well, dont stress ( coming from me, i dont even know what else to say)
8- personally, i thought 1st half was harder than 2nd.
9- clical vignettes are pretty straight forward...but read ALL HISTORY ETC.....
10- panicking will make u lose conc...when i came back from break..i was SO panicked....that made it hard for me to conc on about first 30 mins of 2nd part.
11- i dont know how i did...i personally felt so WEIRD/depressed.......for some reason i did not feel releived....god knows what the result is....but all i know is...i did ALOT MORE THAN I HAVE EVER DONE. ....
12- there were some qs from released papers...my suggestion would be to keep time to go over released papers twice. get urself in the habit of reading question carefully....learn the answers....if u have enough time, learn why other choices are wrong....i only had time to go over released papers once...wish i could have done it once more.
13- kaplan q bank..i felt was only good for its explanations....scoring/toughness of qs....i would say about 50 qs were AS tough as kaplans....other than that, things were straight forward...
14- some questions came out of left field....i just marked and went on and came back to them.
at the end, u can only do so much....I did what i could....Now it is in the hands of god, right where it belongs.

Good luck guys, and thanks to all those who helped me out in any way.

i hope it will work out for u like u want it to be..
i've been reading ur posts in last couple of week in both forums and i wanted to thank u for the sharing of ur thoughts..

i have few questions..

1) in kaplan q bank at least in the anatomy, there a lot of hard q's on the upper and lower limb.. in ur impression does corrolates with the real exam?

2)neuroanatomy- how much focous should i put on that? to know all the pathways and histo of the compartments or more on cranial nerves?

3) how does the exam is built? 50 anatomy and than u do 50 bio/physio
or everything is shuffeld in 200 q's?
4) how many breaks can u take? only after u finish the first part? (after 3.5 hours ) or is it up to u when and how long the break will be?

5) most important.. what woild u do different? in each section i mean..
which books did u use for each section and did u find them satisfactory?

tnx and all the best! looking forward to ur reply

thanks Smilinghokie and Indian graduate for sharing the experience....and hey IG,didn't u change the examdate ....but anyhow u took the right decision as it never helps much ....
GOOD LUCK TO BOTH FOR UR RESULTS:luck:

Indian graduate,Smilinghokie ,we miss seeing you around discussion threads.good luck with your results.

1) in kaplan q bank at least in the anatomy, there a lot of hard q's on the upper and lower limb.. in ur impression does corrolates with the real exam?
my advice would be to not go crazy w/ upper/lower limb...to be honest, i didnt even do lower limb....but that was a huge risk i took and thankfully no q came....thank god...kaplan upper/lower limb is TOO MUCH....what i did do for upper limb...i learned main muscles and their functions, main arteries/branches and nerves and what they supply....in brachial plexus...know roots/branches etc etc

2)neuroanatomy- how much focous should i put on that? to know all the pathways and histo of the compartments or more on cranial nerves?
==> know tracts/nucleus for each nerve....which nerve crosses/supply to what part etc

3) how does the exam is built? 50 anatomy and than u do 50 bio/physio
or everything is shuffeld in 200 q's?
==> shuffled
4) how many breaks can u take? only after u finish the first part? (after 3.5 hours ) or is it up to u when and how long the break will be?
==> u have to take a mandatory break after 3.5 hrs...but in between u can get up whenever u waant...but keep in mind, ur time keeps running....u cant stop the time.

5) most important.. what woild u do different? in each section i mean..
which books did u use for each section and did u find them satisfactory?
==> i mainly used kaplan and wikipedia. didnt go around picking too many books.

tnx and all the best! looking forward to ur reply

hey porcelain258, i ended up not changing date....figured its another 2-3 days with stress...and i was already BURNT out.

Hello indiangraduate so u r finally done with it gr8.How was ur study plan in total,i see u r the 1st person to have not mentioned anything about decks🙄,How did u find the paper in general, was kaplan a good aid to rely upon? What wud u suggest for the pathology part,i mean kaplan gives so much info so do we really nee that much info on each organ system?Lastly do hey ask ques on syndromes related to organ systems?

i am SO SORRY guys, not to mislead you...but Yes, i did decks also....i have NO idea why i skipped that.
But...i would like to mention, decks have mistakes....so if u think something given in decks is fishy...CONFIRM IT.....and the funniest thing is....there was a REALLY BIG DEBATE on sdn on location of mandibular foramen....decks said below occlusal plane and post to molars.......OFCOURSE we all know mand foramen is above occlusal plane....and I HAD THAT QUESTION...i wanted to pull my hair out!!!!
anyways....so, yes, i did decks also.

dentogel, lets just put it this way, if i had a way of eating all the information and digesting the information in kaplan...i would have done it.....yes, they do overdo some things....but u know what...i would OVERDO something ANYDAY rather than underdo it...u know what i mean?

coming to terms, no, i mentioned above, not too many qs on occlusal movt or intercuspation...but LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of dental anat questions....location of cusps/ridges/cingula etc..

Thanx indian graduate and all the best for ur results, hope u come out with flying colors.I am worried abt pathology, coz many of the ppl say that the exam stresses more on general pathology than systemic pathology, so i wanted to confirm that whether that is really true?I am an international dentist and so am not that well versed nor do i have any frnd persuing their dental career so i am totally lost and hence need ur advice&guidance.I have found sdn a very useful and informative than any other site and more so the participating members, who really take their time off to help others.Gr8 job, hats off to u all

like i said earlier, u cant pick and choose what ur gonna study and not study..if u have the kaplan book, decks u should be ok

Thanx a lot once again indian graduate, maybe i m getting really tensed,i'll try my best with kaplan and decks.Anyways wish u all the best for ur scores. One ques -how much time u think one really needs to put in per day?did u do any ques banks,if so which one wud u suggest?I'll be taking my exam in august last week. Can u suggest a good study schedule according to ur experience plz:scared:

Everyone studies differently... but for me I really studied for 3 weeks... the first 2 weeks spending about 5 days a week studying 5-7 hours a day and then the week before the exam studying for (no lie) about 15-18 hours a day. Haha that last week truly was hell, but I really needed to go back over everything one more time. I did dental decks which I found to be VERY helpful... I went through all of them in detail twice. I also used the First Aid book if there were any topics that I didn't feel really comfortable with. Granted I haven't gotten my score yet, but I think my study method seemed to work well. But, I don't want to specialize, so I was just aiming for passing. We even have people in my class that are studying every day this summer 8-5 and aren't taking the boards till december! So to each his own! I felt the questions on the actual exam to be very straight forward and very similar in format to the 2004 pilot exam. If you look that over, you'll have a pretty good example of what to expect. Good luck to all!

hi all,

Thanx for ur advices and guidence. Tell us also abt questions regarding, biochem, physio, micro and patho. What organs or system discussed more in ur exam? I have my exam on 24th and hopefully I will perform well due to ur guidence.

hey indian grad...

so u are finally done with exams............gosh i know must be stresses out but atleast you are finally out of it............
well i have somethiing to ask..............
if u got any ques from upper limb, were they simple anatomical or clinically oriented
and how was anatomy and dental anatomy in all????
how would you rate the ques

we all rely on your exp and suggestions

thannx a lot for sharing all of this............

gud luck........................

i know all the questions are for indian graduate but i think he is busy partying rite now...
what i can tell is this that do upper limb from kaplan...n u should be fine i just had one question on u limb n tht too was about brachial plexus which i think u guys should be thorough with.
i dont think there is ne need for lower limb.
do tmj from kaplan decks plus the questions in released papers....
n onething which is not given in detail in kaplan is Collagen....please do it from somewhere.... wikipedia etc but do it in detail like synthesis structure....

check out ada specifications here, they dont need u to do lower limb

Hi all,

Recent part 1 takers please post ur experience of exam, materials used, hours of input, duration.

thanks
i took part1 17th july 2008.I studied dental decks only but i reviewed them 3 times.about 70 to 75 percent of the questions were from privious questions which are released and from decks.the extra books that I used was dentessential of kaplan and first aid.I used them when I need to understand an object.I studied all pathways from denessential of kaplan and they are in the first part of the book.my advice is that to study the decks only beacuse they cover all the subjects.no other book can give you such a brief idea, beacuse after the exam i went through some books to find some answers but i could not and some pionts in the decks that you can find nowhere in the books.so study the decks but study completely.

ha ha ha .indian grad.ya we learned def imp about her ............
