NBDE Part 1--How are we scored?

I'm so confused on how we are graded for the NBDE PART 1. I know that NBDE part 1 candidates are not graded on a curve but against a pre-determined standard....Can some explain this to me on an elementary level? b/c I don't understand it. I hear so many different explanations from different people on how we are graded. Do they measure us against everyone who has taken it that month, week, or day. Please let me know what you think.....
