Is this pass/fail just for some particular schools or is it for the test in general? I can't find a specific answer. Also, what's the best way to plan to specialize if your GPA isn't high? Will there be a different test for each specialty or just one test for all specialities, etc? Anyway, does anyone think its even worth starting to study early since you know its going to be pass/fail?

I called ADA to ask abt it.

They said it is not yet sure that.

They will decide abt it on 01-01-12.

Hello kimdento,
Thank you for the updated information on pass/fail format in 2012. Could you please post the link to where you have read the format of new questions. Would appreciate it a lot! Thanx.

Thanks Dentdreamer for sharing this important piece of information. The link was very helpful 👍
Does anyone know if the changes in '13 decks are more geared towards the multiple MCQ style & extended matching. If so then they won't be helpful for prep for exam given in 2011.

so i took part 2's early this month, just found out yesterday i didnt pass, got a 74!, anyway ive already taken wrebs, law and ethics exam, everything is ready to go, just needed to pass part 2's! my question is this, i know on the testing website they say you need to wait 90 days between re-examinations, however im certain ive heard of students being allowed to retake it much sooner than the 90 period. has anyone had this situation or know of anyone thats failed part 2's and been able to re-take it quickly? thanks.

With the exam being pass/fail, will the study material change drastically? Reason I ask is I have already purchased old dental decks/kaplan material (at a fair price).

You do get a score but its not released. They moved to pass fail system bc in the past the "competitive" nature of some forced them to look for unreleased questions.. Now by not giving a score they are hoping that this goes away. As for specialiing, the best way is to see if you can find an internship as a junior especially in a area you want to specialize and network. If they like you you have a good chance of getting into that program. When I was a freshman a senior got into OS and he ranked in the lower end.

Hi everyone,

I took part I in 2009 and scored 80. I dont think that is a very good score to get admission. I have also passed part II with 77. Now I was thinking maybe I should try to improve my part I score before Jan 1st 2012. Do u all think it will make a difference by trying to improve score? it is going to be pass/ Fail anyway so I am already a PASS????

My understanding is that you can no longer retake NBDE just to try and improve your score. So what you earned is what you earned, plus you run the risk of lowering your score. I would be happy with passing and try to improve your application to specialty in other ways like networking and making close friends with the faculty at the specialty program you want to get into.
