Hi everyone! I know every year applicants are always wondering when they will hear back from schools. This past cycle out of state applicants heard if they were offered a seat on 12/21 around 5pm! In state applicants have a different admissions process where they heard later in the cycle. Obviously no guarantee that the timeline will stay the same but hopefully it will give you somewhat of an idea:)

Upon submission of the VMCAS/supplemental application, applicants will receive information (via email) on completing payment for the required supplemental application fee.

We wish you all the best in the 2025 admissions cycle.

POLICY on PREREQUISITES
Here are policies to keep in mind regarding prerequisites before submitting your application to the NC State DVM Program.

1. prerequisites may be completed in a classroom, lab or online at any regionally accredited two-year or four-year college or university.

2. applicants must achieve a C- or better in prerequisite courses.

3. NC State doesn't impose time limits on the age of a prerequisite.

4. If an applicant needs to repeat a course, he or she will have fulfilled the requirement if a C- or higher is achieved when the course is repeated (whether on the second or subsequent attempts).

5. An applicant may not take a repeated course during the cycle. A C- or better must be earned before submitting the application (exception: prerequisite courses not previously taken).

6. Advanced Placement (AP) courses can be used to fulfill prerequisites. The applicant’s undergraduate institution must list the AP course by name (Biology, English, etc.) on its transcript indicating the number of credits granted. AP courses are not factored when calculating grade point averages.

7. FOR CURRENT CYCLE All but two (2) of the required courses or labs must be completed by the end of the fall semester (FA 24) of the application cycle (2025). The remaining courses or labs must be completed in the following spring semester (SP 25). Required courses or labs can’t be completed in the summer semester (Summer 25) immediately preceding matriculation (FA 25). This is a TOTAL of 2 (two courses, two labs, or one course and one lab) in separate prerequisites (i.e., Microbiology and Microbiology lab = 1, Microbiology and Microbiology lab + Statistics = 2, Microbiology and Microbiology lab + Statistics + Physics II Lab = 3).

We hope this information is helpful.

Three (3) recommendations are required using the VMCAS Electronic Evaluation system (eLOR). Each evaluator should include a written narrative that supports his or her overall evaluation of the applicant. Applicants must submit letters through the eLOR system. Although VMCAS allows a maximum of 6 submissions, NC State only requires 3 letters of recommendation and prefers to only receive 3 letters per applicant if possible. All letters submitted will be read by the admissions committee.

It is highly recommended that two recommendations (2) are submitted by veterinarians or PhD scientists with whom the applicant has worked in a veterinary or research setting. The letters must describe the nature of the work relationship. The third letter can be from an academic advisor, employment supervisor or other evaluator of the applicant’s choosing who has some working knowledge of the applicant. Applicants should not ask relatives to submit letters on their behalf.

Evaluations should support experiences listed and validate maturity, commitment and work ethic with specific examples. The admissions committee may contact references directly if further information or clarification is required.

Additional information for reference writers can be found here.

The three (3) letters must be received by the VMCAS deadline of 09/16/2024 at 11:59pmET in order to count toward verification. Applicants with less than three letters of recommendation will not be verified and will not be reviewed by NC State.

NC State doesn't extend the deadline and will not accept letters of recommendation outside of VMCAS.

The NC State supplemental application questions are located in the NC State portal, "Materials Page," within VMCAS. Look for the "Questions" tab.

Both the VMCAS and NC State supplemental applications are due on the same deadline - September 16, 2024 at 11:59pm ET.

Upon submission of the VMCAS/supplemental application, applicants will receive information on completing payment for the required supplemental application fee.

We wish you all the best in the 2025 admissions cycle.

GENERAL ADVISORY (not specific to an individual's application)

A course in animal nutrition is a requirement. If you attend a college that does not offer an animal nutrition course, you may want to consider taking one via distance learning, such as an internet course or correspondence course offered by an accredited college or university.

Animal Nutrition courses are offered via distance education at:
The institutions listed above are links to the course that NC State accepts for this prerequisite. This information is also on our website.

We discourage the practice of waiting on a decision letter before enrolling in this required course.

The NC State DVM Program accepts prerequisites completed in a classroom, lab or online at any regionally accredited two-year or four-year college or university.

The university offers ANS 225 (summer) and ANS 230 (fall and/or spring) by Distance Education to fulfill that requirement.

Students can sign up as a NON-DEGREE STUDENT and register to take one of these classes.

These courses are administered by the university; not the College of Veterinary Medicine.

We thank you for your interest in NC State University.

GPA Policy Advisory

Candidates are considered academically qualified for review if they meet the following minimum academic standards at time of application:

North Carolina Residents: 3.0 GPA in three categories (Cumulative, Required Course, Last 45 Credit Hours)

Non-Residents: 3.40 GPA in three categories (Cumulative, Required Course, Last 45 Credit Hours)

The Cumulative GPA includes all college-level courses (undergraduate and graduate - if applicable).

The Required Course GPA calculates performance in prerequisites.

The GPA for the Last 45 credit hours goes back a semester at a time. If a student completed 44 credit hours in his/her final three semesters, the College of Veterinary Medicine would go back 4 semesters to calculate the last 45 credit hours, meaning it may be calculated for 46 hours or more. The Last 45 GPA includes all post- secondary coursework (undergraduate, graduate, professional school, etc.).

Determine your GPA using the following conversions:

A+ = 4.0 / A = 4.0 / A- = 3.7

B+ = 3.3 / B = 3.0 / B- = 2.7

C+ = 2.3 / C = 2.0 / C- = 1.7

D+ = 1.3 / D = 1.0 / D- = 0.7

F = 0.0

Multiply the numeric grade equivalent by the number of credits for the course to obtain the quality points. Divide the total quality points by the total number of credits to determine the respective grade point average.

Applicant GPA are not rounded. For example, a 2.99 Cumulative GPA for a resident or a 3.39 Cumulative GPA for a non-resident does not meet the requirement. Grades achieved in multiple course attempts will be calculated into the Required Course GPA, Overall GPA and Last 45 Hour GPA (if applicable). In other words, the lower grade(s) is/are calculated into the GPA (not dropped).

ALTERNATIVE GPA CRITERIA – NORTH CAROLINA RESIDENTS ONLY

In certain cases, applicants who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement (in one GPA category) may be considered for admission based on alternative evidence of academic qualification as determined by the Faculty Committee on Admissions. This classification helps identify applicants who may have had some impediment (medical issue, family illness, unrelated major) to meeting minimum academic standards. It is incumbent on the applicant to provide evidence of academic strength (usually a stronger Last 45 GPA or Required Course GPA) while detailing what strengths he or she would bring to the admitted class in light of the overall academic record.

Consideration under “Alternative Eligibility” applies only to the GPA requirement (in one GPA category) and not the other admissions requirements (C- or better in required courses, no more than two required courses remaining in the spring semester of the admissions cycle, lack of prerequisites, etc.).

Applicants should determine their own grade point averages in all three categories (Required Course, Last 45 and Overall) before submitting an application. To determine a GPA, simply divide the total quality points by the total number of credits using the grade conversion chart listed above.

NOTE: The NC State DVM Program doesn't make exceptions to the GPA requirement. Applicants who don't meet or exceed the minimum requirement shouldn't apply. If they elect to apply, the application will be disqualified from consideration.

Please contact the college by email ([email protected]) if you have any questions regarding this policy.

Question for the "English Composition & Writing or Public Speaking or Communications" requirement, what does "writing across the curriculum" mean? My institution has used the phrase "writing emphasis" for certain courses, does that mean the same thing? For example, a Biology course I took had a writing emphasis as we had to do multiple papers and it fulfilled the writing prerequisite at my institution. Would that count? Thanks!

"Writing across the curriculum" refers to courses that emphasize writing regardless of the course subject matter. Courses that are noted as "writing emphasis" or "writing intensive" in the course catalog satisfy the English Composition & Writing or Public Speaking or Communications requirement for the DVM Program.

I want to be an equine vet but I am worried aboout putting it on my application because I have majority of my vet experience in small animal. I did do horse 4-H and have been shadowing equine vets recently. Would this hurt my application?

Just to be extra clear, the supplemental application are the questions completed on VMCAS, correct?

It is best practice for an applicant to have experience in their professional area of interest. The applicant can use the personal statement and essays to explain their interest in a specific area and how their experience informed that interest.

Are kira talent interviews going out for in state applicants this year? also what were the stats of the class of 2028?

The NC State CVM will send Kira Talent interview information to the In-State pool later in the cycle (targeting mid-October).

You can read a profile of the Class of 2028 here and here.

So technically for in-state residents, a GPA of under 3.0 can still be considered for admission as long as it is just in one GPA category?

I was looking through my applications and noticed that the NCSU section of VMCAS says that directions for paying the supplemental fee will be emailed to applicants after they submit their VMCAS application. I submitted my application a while ago and now realized I never paid the fee! I paid it now, but am worried I missed an email or a deadline. I'm hoping all is ok!

NC State will receive the highest number of applications in the history of college (n=2000+). We will have a more definitive count and breakdown at the end of the month after VMCAS completes the verification process for the entire pool.

Thank you for your support.
