Hello Class of 2030 Applicants! This is the Student Development Office for the College of Veterinary Medicine. As you begin the application process, leave any questions you may have here and we will do our best to get them answered. You are also encouraged to review admissions requirements at the NC State CVM web site.

Hello! Quick question, I'm pretty sure I know the answer to it but want to clarify, when you calculate the GPA for OOS applicants, is it the GPA at the time of VMCAS verification? I.E. if my GPA at submission is 3.39, that's the one you use to evaluate candidates for the requirements?

Yes, we use the GPA calculation at the time we clear the application for committee review. For OOS applicants, that mostly happens Sep 1 - Oct 15.

Does the admissions committee read every recommendation letter for each applicant?

Also if I’m reapplying, how much info do you guys see from my previous application cycle, for instance if I change my focus pick from large animal to small animal would you know that? Just curious about the process

Thanks for your help !

Yes, the NC State DVM Admissions Committee reads all letters of recommendation submitted on behalf of an applicant.

The Admissions Committee only reads the application submitted for the current cycle. It doesn't reference applications from previous cycles.

Hello!
I noticed that the microbiology prereq had the following update:

NOTICE ***Starting spring of 2025 - MB 251 will be the required General Microbiology Course and MB252/254 will be the new labs.***

Does this mean that MB 251 + MB252/254 will be an acceptable course to fill the Microbiology requirement in addition to the courses already approved?

MB 251, with labs MB 252/254, are the new NC State undergraduate microbiology course(s) that will fulfill the prerequisite. We will still accept MB 351 and MB 411 (and associated labs) if an applicant has already completed them for the prerequisite.

Program selection and application submission will be available in VMCAS from May 8, 2025 for the 2026 Admissions Cycle.

How much weight does picking a focus group carry on the application?
I love large or mixed animal medicine but I work mostly in small animal right now, so I’m conflicted on whether to pick small animal or mixed animal based on experience, especially because I feel like peoples minds change during vet school?

Would picking mixed or small animal hurt my application at all?

The admissions committee doesn't place weight on any area of the application. The packet receives full consideration of the information presented in a holistic manner.

Hello! For prerequisites, are online labs accepted? I am aiming to take Organic Chemistry 2, but I need to get the lab portion of Organic Chemistry 1 completed prior. None of my nearby schools allow for the lab portion to be taken on its own (I had taken a lecture-only Organic Chemistry 1), and I need it done before the fall to complete all prerequisites in time for applications. The only way I could do this is through the UNE online program, which offers an Organic Chemistry 1 Lab on its own over the summer, but I want to ensure it will be accepted first! I understand it is a bizarre situation, so I greatly appreciate your help!

Would it be okay to have two letter Recs from the same hospital, with slightly different perspectives? Or would that be seen as basically the same recommendation

The NC State DVM Program accepts prerequisites completed in a classroom, lab or online at any regionally accredited two-year or four-year college or university.

Three (3) recommendations are required using the VMCAS Electronic Evaluation system (eLOR). Each evaluator should include a written narrative that supports his or her overall evaluation of the applicant. Applicants must submit letters through the eLOR system. Although VMCAS allows a maximum of 6 submissions, NC State only requires 3 letters of recommendation and prefers to only receive 3 letters per applicant.

It is highly recommended that two recommendations (2) are submitted by veterinarians or PhD scientists with whom the applicant has worked in a veterinary or research setting. The letters must describe the nature of the work relationship. The third letter can be from an academic advisor, employment supervisor or other evaluator of the applicant’s choosing who has some working knowledge of the applicant. Applicants should not ask relatives to submit letters on their behalf.

Evaluations should support experiences listed and validate maturity, commitment and work ethic with specific examples. The admissions committee may contact references directly if further information or clarification is required. You will be asked to provide contact information on the NC State supplemental application for veterinarians with whom you have worked who did not provide an electronic evaluation.

Letter writers can work at the same location but should write an individual assessment of the applicant's potential.

Do you accept "pass" or "satisfactory" for prereqs taken during covid? If so, what specific semesters are included in that?

Is the last 45 GPA calculated from the time the application is reviewed or the time you will graduate (Sophomore and Junior semesters or Junior and Senior)?

It is calculated on completed, graded courses at the time of application. The GPA are updated if the applicant is completing coursework during the admissions cycle.

The GPA for the Last 45 credit hours goes back a semester at a time. If a student completed 44 credit hours in his/her final three semesters, the College of Veterinary Medicine would go back 4 semesters to calculate the last 45 credit hours, meaning it may be calculated for 46 hours or more. The Last 45 GPA includes all post- secondary coursework (undergraduate, graduate, professional school, etc.).

NC State made the following changes to admissions requirements for the 2021 admissions cycle.

P/F grades: NC State will allow a Pass in P/F or Satisfactory in the S/U grading systems for prerequisites completed in Spring or Summer 2020
(a) courses submitted in the P/F or S/U scale will not be factored into the Required Course GPA calculation

Prerequisites completed in all other semesters must be completed for a letter grade.

Hello! I am taking an additional graduate level biochemistry and genetic course in the fall for my masters program. If I do better in those classes are they able to be be used instead of the generic BCH 351 and GN 311 from my undergrad degree as my designated prerequisites or would that technically count as "retaking it" and not be eligible to substitute. I have no outstanding prerequisites remaining, these are JUST for the completion of my master degree.
