So this is my second application cycle and I think that I will not get in anywhere again :/. Im a Texas resident and I applied only to texas schools and a few OOS MD schools.

my main stats
3.8c GPA
3.7c GPA

27 mcat 10 7 10

I was hoping to hear from TCOM at least but nothing so far. Not even an interview. For next year I want to apply DO. I didnt this year because I was not well informed about DO schools until late in the cycle and by that time I was not prepared well for it. So my delima is what to do in my 3rd gap year... I spent last year working as a scribe for a few months and retaking my MCAT. I previously received a 25. This year I am working on putting in some serious community service hours and clinical work. I was thinking of applying for TCOMS SMP and maybe a few cheaper SMP but I would mainly be using this as a filler for a year. Any input?

Apply outside of Texas for DO. You need more eggs in your basket. Your stats are high! Did you ask last year what could be done to strengthen your application? You should have a couple interviews by now. Good luck!

Hm, don't really know what to say.

Next year apply more broadly to osteopathic schools. Perhaps shadow a D.O.; that would help you a lot. TCOM is actually pretty picky about who they accept; I have absolutely no idea whether I can get in or not, even with good stats. :shrug:But don't give up yet! Realize it's unlikely but still possible.

I think that your MCAT trend of 25-->25-->27 will probably lock you out of most M.D. schools. Your GPA is fantastic, so an SMP probably won't help. But I'm not sure about that. If you are looking for something to spend a year doing, TCOM's SMP is relatively cheap ($7k?) and has a good track record.

OP is something preventing you from applying to OOS DO schools? Or are you determined to only stay in-state?

Your stats are competitive for a lot of DO schools and it's only October, which is still relatively early especially for DO. Just apply broadly NOW and see what happens. You will likely get a few interviews. Applications are cheap compared to spending another year doing an SMP etc.

That's true too, although I don't think it's "relatively early" anymore. More like "relatively late." But definitely not hopeless.

I have nothing against applying OOS. It's that I don't have a letter of rec from a DO and it would keep me out of a lot of schools that I'm interested in. I wasn't totally prepared to apply DO this cycle.

Many schools just require a physician, it can be either MD or DO. Some schools don't even require a physician LOR at all.

True but I don't have either. And if I'm gonna get one it would be a DO since it's more logical. I'm actually going to shadow a DO next week and she has agreed to write me a letter so I'm hoping to check that off.

October is not that late. I was like you and didn't have a physician letter until later in the application cycle. I applied to two DO schools in like November and got into both. I used an MD letter too.

It would be the beginning of November by the time I would be able to submit everything. Would that be to late?

NO DAGABBIT! APPLY!!! Submit your primary NOWW. Youll be verified by the end of November anyways and if you submit your secondaries early December youll have a decent shot at many OOS DO Schools. Screw Texas (no offense). Theres plenty of great DO schools!

OP, it's up to you. But as a Texan, it is kinda a shame to give up in-state tuition. If you shadow a DO sometime from now until next summer, and find a compelling statement for why osteo, I think you have a very good chance at TCOM. One of the best DO schools plus in-state tuition. Something like 80% of their students do ACGME residencies, which is amazing.

Waiting another year may be worth it.

But then again, if you really don't want to wait, then submit your AACOMAS primary asap. Look for schools without a regional bias and you might get some love.

Well to be honest I have no idea why I didn't get any attention from tcom. I feel my stats r within their range and I have decent ECs. I don't know if shadowing a DO is the whole reason why I didn't get some attention. I don't really want to wait 3 years to go to medschool. Idk I would love the instate tuition but it might not happen.

Then go apply in AACOMAS now 🙂 go make a What Are My Chances thread to get input on school list. Good luck!

The DO letter or shadowing experience is not a hard requirement at TCOM. Very few people I know had it. Apply broadly, and you will be accepted somewhere. Best of luck!
