New York COM (NYIT-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My girlfriend just got an ii this morning. I remember her submitting in the secondaries 3 weeks ago. (3.62s / 3.6o / 28 / in state)

95% of schools will try to recruit the top stats first, then work their way down the list.

Do you think they are doing IS students first or do they have higher stat requirements for OOS? My stats are pretty much the same as those who got ii and were complete after me.

Hi Everybody,

I'm new to SDN but applying this cycle. I got an ii email yesterday and set up my interview for the beginning of December today.

I'm IS.

Good luck to everybody applying!

I'm not sure if they are inviting IS first but I do know that OOSers need higher stats to get an invite.

It's only true to a certain extent, I've seen some OOS on here post stats that aren't crazy high to get ii's. Its not like OOS need a 30 while IS only needs a 26. But in general I would say an OOS would probably need a min 27 MCAT.

I hope your right cause I'm OOS and I really want an ii. Have you heard anything back yet? I think we were complete around the same time.

If it helps..

If you call the admissions office, they will be able to tell you whether or not your file has been reviewed yet. I called a few days ago and they told me that I have been reviewed already by the adcom. No II here yet though, which is not a good sign for me.

Thanks. When were you complete? Hope you hear from them soon.

my primary was in on one of the first days available for submission. secondary was marked complete on 8/28. from what i gather on this thread and previous years, it seems as if the former is the more important date.

I actually hadn't completed my NYIT secondary until two weeks ago when someone from their office called me and inquired about whether or not I would complete my file by submitting it. I was pretty impressed they would call me individually, so I completed it right away, and by the next day, they extended me an interview invite. So now I'm interviewing on November 20th, during the afternoon block. Anyone else interviewing then?

I wasn't initially as interested in this school as I am now, as I've been working with an osteopathic physician in the ED I work at that was a graduate and spoke highly of it, and is a competent physician in her own right. I'll definitely be going to the interview and seeing how it turns out. Fingers crossed!

You must have something impressive on your application.

Had some but I would say pretty standard applicant, no major awards or publications.

Hi, do you remember when you submitted your secondary or how long it took for you hear back from them? thanks

They actually called me to complete my secondary and I sent it in a couple days later. I was complete 3 days before I was offered an ii.

IS student here applying next year. What are the IS stats like this year? Did you guys get interview invites yet?

they dont have any. the questions you see are the entire secondary.

Hey guys, current 1st year here. If you have any questions about applying, the school, the city, or anything else feel free to PM me or post. Good Luck to all this cycle!

I see on your MDAPs profile who had a nice selection of schools to choose from. How'd you settle on NYCOM?

Also, what's the housing situation like? Do most students live within walking distance to campus or commute?

What's the lowest MCAT score any of you heard of gaining admissions?

I am OOS, interviewed in January last year, and had an mcat score 24 (ya terrible). but i managed to be one of the first groups accepted. There is hope for you low MCAT score people. and obviously they didnt care much about me not being instate.

I had a 4.0 all through college though, and volunteer.. blah blah.

Hi All!
I was just wondering, but did anyone who got an ii have their interview yet?
I have an interview on Dec. 3rd and I could really use some feedback.

Good luck to everyone applying!

My app was complete the last week of July and still haven't heard anything. I'm OOS (NJ), but i feel like my gpa and mcat are competitive. Waiting foreverrr 🙁

Things seem to be quiet around these parts. I wonder how they will fill the 300+ seats at the pace they're going.

I have been complete as long as you have essentially, and I'm probably going to withdraw my application soon. I have no desire to live on Long Island. The SDN posts I have been reading about the relatively high attrition rate at this school is also disconcerting to say the least, especially vis-a-vis the high tuition and cost of living.

What made you apply if you find Long Island unattractive?

I'm only considering NYCOM as a last resort.

When I started this process, I didn't really think location mattered all that much. I now have a different opinion. The only DO I know went to NYCOM and loved his school. So I applied.

Same here.

OOS with 3.5/3.5/30 and not a word, been complete since July as well.

I'm interviewing 11/20.

I'll post my experience here and PM you to give you some insight/feedback about the interview afterwards.

No worries mate, interviewers are a blast!

I applied to NYCOM b/c I have 3 family friends who are awesome surgeons in the NYC area whom are all alumni. I am from out of state and was worried about moving to long island, but personally i think the area is beautiful and was and still am pleasantly surprised. There are beaches within 5 mins of my house that I study at frequently (i had no beaches where I used to live), and the city is only a 30-40 min train ride away. After exams we go to the beach and drink, and alot of us go into the city. It is the best of both worlds if you ask me. Also the drop out rate may seem high but i'd say most of it is due to people realizing medicine isn't right for them, rather than failing out. Some people dont realize how much time and dedication medical school is until they are in it. Most of the faculty is great, supportive and readily available if you reach out to them. So I wouldn't let the rate get you down, if anything it makes you that much cooler if you are able to stick through it.

Also everyone who is worried about interviews, NYCOM interviews alot later than almost every school. They dont even start their first interviews until november (most start in august). We haven't even started the "ambassador program" aka tour guide program to prepare current students on giving you guys tours of the campus. So don't lose hope

Interviewing here in a week I'll also provide as much feedback as I can.

Does this school send out complete emails?

I am also interviewing soon, Nov. 5th...is that when you will be there? I am surprised to see this school starts to interview so late (quoting Martian11). Do you think our interviews will be the first?

This Wednesday for me, not sure what the timing is like but if this is the first set then it does seem late. Other DO schools have interviewed by now right?

Yeah definitely... I know some that started in Aug and others start in Sept. I have only had one so far, but hopefully more start rolling in! Good luck to you!

Can you IS students who received interview invites post your scores ? Both MCAT and GPAs please

Hi Everyone,

I am also applying here. I am from Cali so I am hoping for some OOS love.

Congrats on the invite! I have similar stats as you (except my huge upward GPA trend was in grad school) with tons of ECs and am really, really hoping for an interview. A great college friend of mine who I really respect and admire has nothing but great things about NYIT and his first year there. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving-week interview and that you enjoy the school. Good luck! 🙂

Not a word my dude

I'm an OOS applicant hoping to get some NYIT love. Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but do you know if they have a preference for IS applicants? Or does it just seem like it because there's probably a greater proportion of NY folks applying? When I called them earlier in the cycle, they said they'll notify me of their interview decision sometime between now and March... :O

yes they do have an in-state preference. Their class profile from last year is In-State: 70% and Out-of-State: 30%

Hello guys,
I am a FMG who just migrated to USA.
I am confused about what i can do in USA right now!
I came across the EPP program by NYIT COM. Anyone here know more about it then on the website?
Also i read that NYIT-COM is known to weed out students from their program regularly,is it true?

Also the fees are pretty high for the program. Are all students given financial assistant. 55k a year is *_*

I would appreciate any help i can get ! 🙂

1st year here ! Pm me if you have any questions about NYITCOM, I'll be happy to help 🙂

For those of you who have interviews, how long did it take for you to hear back about the ii after you submitted your secondary?
