NHSC APPLICATION 2015/2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I figured out the roles tab dilemma, if you login from different portals (such as the NHSC admin portal) with your account you will have a roles tab because it shows every portal you've used to login. They have many different portals, and your NHSC info will work on all of them.

The list of currently approved dental specialties (which you can choose to do by delaying your service commitment) are:

1-year GPD
1-year AEGD
2-year Pediatric Dentistry
2-year Public Health Dentistry

You cannot specialize in something other than their currently approved specialties. I believe they change them or at least review and assess whether they need to be changed on a yearly basis, so in 4/5 years, the list of approved specialties could be entirely different. However, if you think about it, those 4 specialties are the only ones that tie in really well with the service orientation of the organization, so I doubt they'll change except to potentially include some of the new 2-year GPD/AEGDs that are starting to surface.

Just so that we're clear on the differences between residency and specialty programs, GPR* and AEGD are not considered specialties, per ADA (http://www.ada.org/en/education-car...stry/dental-specialties/specialty-definitions)

Apparently NHSC doesn't care what ADA considers a specialty. That "approved specialties" list was quoted directly from the NHSC material. The wording doesn't matter - those "programs", if you will, are allowable according to NHSC. Yes - correction on GPR and not GPD.

FYI, this message is now posted on the NHSC site:
"Please excuse the inconvenience, but the site will be down for scheduled maintenance from 6:15PM to approximately 8 PM EST on Friday, August 21, 2015."

This MIGHT mean updates, since they did happen around Aug 21st last year!

Finger crossed we'll hear back today and this is the maintenance we've been waiting for!

Has anyone received ANY updates at all? Any countersignatures? Emails??? Talked to any reps? The wait is agonizing!

Haha she gotta sign it right after I posted. Got my counter-signature as well. Congrats everyone! Now I'm just waiting for the official email and then off to celebrate 🙂

I hope the countersignature means we are getting the scholarship but I still won't believe I am getting the scholarship...until I actually get the e-mail notice saying so!

From the contract: "Section 338A of the Act requires applicants to submit with their application a signed contract stating the terms and conditions of participation in the Scholarship Program. The Secretary shall sign only those contracts submitted by applicants who are selected for participation."

Jttran, YOU JUST MADE MY DAY. Thanks for, unlike me, being a thorough reader!

I hate reading legal documents, so I don't blame you. To be honest I only skimmed thru it and just that particular paragraph caught my attention 😛

Being a finalist meant you were getting it, but paranoia is understandable.. lol

Any finalists not get countersigned today? Cuz I didn't

I'm a finalists and didn't get a countersign. Does the countersignature appear in your application status?

It appears under your electronic signature on the contract. My status is still same as before.

Is this for the dental school class of 2020? Or 2019?

Countersigned! Congratulations everyone.

Applied for 4 years.

Credit Check: 6.11.2015
Finalist Notification: 7.21.2015
Counter Signature: 8.25.2015

Got mine countersigned today, too! Would really like to get the official confirmation email soon.

Is this for the dental school class of 2020? Or 2019?

It's for classes 2016-2019 depending on how many years of funding you requested. If you're going to be class of 2020, you can't apply until the next cycle, which usually opens in the middle of March, because you need a form filled out by the dental school that you're attending that you've been accepted and will be matriculating there.

Awesome. Thank you I was worried I missed my chance to apply

Countersigned Today At 10am. I guess they do have a lot of contracts to sign, but being patient is hard haha

Do you guys know what's the deal if our loan is applied already? Since they're not going to distribute the funds until october

I'm in the same boat as you. My loans have already been signed for and disbursed so I can start dental school. I spoke with my dental school's financial aid person in July and she said that once the money from the NHSC comes in, she will cancel all the loan money that I have taken out. It'd be a good idea to speak with the financial aid person at your school.

Does anyone know when the NHSC sends official word (if earlier than Sept. 20) to accepted scholars after they counter-sign? And also by what method (i.e. snail mail, e-mail)?

I have a few questions:
If you receive the scholarship for D1, do you have to competitively apply with everyone else again to get it for the rest of D2, D3, and D4? I thought once you "got" the scholarship, it was for the full four years. And if the latter isn't true, then is the commitment to service time still proportionate to the scholarship?
For example, if you got the scholarship for D1, but not for the rest of dental school, would you only owe one year of service back to them?

When you apply for the scholarship, you can specify how many years you are requesting (1-4 years). If you decide to only request funding for one year, the program will ask you at the end of that year if you would like to continue. If you decide to continue, they will just extend your contract. You have to give back one year for every year that you receive funding. If you choose to only request funding for 1 year, you would still have to give back 2 years.

@Myce So if you request funding for 4 years, is there a good chance they'll approve it?

They definitely will approve a 4-year request. I requested funding for four years and was approved. Let me know if you have more questions. 🙂

I was reading that last year the NHSC scholarship program received 1,844 applicants and gave out about 190 awards. I was watching the 2015 cycle webinar this week and, if I recall correctly, it said they received ~ 5,100 applicants this year and gave out about 190 awards. Does anyone else who attended the webinar remember that being that case? If so, that seems like a pretty dramatic increase in applicants compared to the last three years.....

You are correct. They said they had 5100 applicants and gave out 196 awards. It is a dramatic increase, but with the rise of student loan debt I'm not too surprised by the increase.
