NHSC Application 2016 is Officially Open!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a question for you guys that have applied for this thing. I'm definitely planning on applying for it next cycle, and I'm also considering applying for the HPSP military scholarships. Do people ever apply for both? I'd much prefer the NHSC scholarship, so what happens if the military accepts me and I don't know if the NHSC people accept me? I have a friend who got the NHSC scholarship and they literally told him after his first day of dental school, haha.
If you're not disadvantaged, go HPSP. And yeah you don't find out about it until September so if you apply to both, you'll probably find out about HPSP way earlier and either have to accept or decline it before you find out about NHSC. Pick one.

Status isn't shown when accessing the mobile site. Thus, my assumption was based on his avatar wearing a stethoscope, which dentists don't wear. How silly of me.

You do realize what a stethoscope is for right? Some dentists actually check heart sounds and blood pressure on patients before performing a surgical procedure on geriatric patients.

I'm not getting into this petty argument that you're desiring. Of course I realize what a stethoscope is. Surgical procedures on geriatric patients are a very small percentage of the business. I am very confident in saying that the vast majority of dentists don't wear a stethoscope around their necks. Now, can we get back to over-analyzing the NHSC credit check procedures?

HAHA don't worry, he's one of "those" people... Same kind of people you won't want to be friends with once you get to dental school

Leave @UKalum alone. He's doing a lot to analyze the NHSC details for many of us right now.

I was just trying to say it's not out of this world to have stethoscope on his avatar as a dental student? I'm out of this thread.

But it is out of this world to have your location as "My sisters pants"

Blame Jamie not me.

Anyways, I've got nothing to contribute to this thread. And of course this thread isn't about stethoscopes, so my mistake. Goodluck on your NHSC applications, I hope you guys get it!

No harm. Thanks for the well wishes.

Does anyone now what base pay is for a commissioned officer?

Pure speculation but the status checker website notes of site maintenance tomorrow night. In previous years it looks like when this happens at times it means a change in status.

What is the new status suppose to say?

Maybe "participant"? But this doesn't usually change before the finalist emails are sent out. The portal could be down for maintenance to update some of the other NHSC scholarships like the nurse scholarship or the loan repayment.

The NHSC doesn't determine the base pay, it depends on the site you select to work at. You pick a site that is NHSC qualified and has a high HPSA score after interviewing. It is the same as working for a community health center straight out of school but if you are a NHSC scholar, you have to pick a site with high HPSA score. So the base salary would really depend on what the site you choose offers. I would say around 90k-130k. This is what I have heard from other scholars.

+1.

Location determines the salary. For dentistry Floss's figures seem pretty reasonable from what I have heard from previous year. I have always heard expect 15-25k lower that what you'd generally expect. The more rural you are the higher than salary tends to be. Searching through merritthawkins for primary care, I have seen some in the 200s for primary care so I guess it is possible (makes mention it is a NHSC site but doesn't seem to be too salient on the actual score) but I would not count on it (paralleling this for dentistry salaries) being the norm.

Does anyone think that NHSC reviewers judge applicants based on the school that they go to? Would they look down on applications that are going to one of the priciest schools? just curious, what you all think…?

I think they must consider it, but that said, the 6 people I know who have the scholarship go to some of the pricier private dental schools. So there is hope! 🙂

Hmm, Okay, thanks for your input!

Also, I am an incoming dental student this fall and I had my undergraduate school fill out the verification forms for my disadvantaged status and I am wondering if this was a mistake. Like if this would have hindered my application from getting a credit check for further review? Additionally, does anyone think that you have more of a chance getting the scholarship once already in dental school as opposed to applying as an incoming student? All of you seem to know a lot so I'm just getting all the questions swarming my mind out, thanks 😉

I can't speak to the verification form question, but I can say that I applied last year (before I had started dental school) and didn't get a credit check. I haven't done anything astounding in the past year, and I didn't fill out the application any differently, but I did get a credit check this year. So maybe already being in dental school matters? All I know is I'm going to keep applying until I receive the scholarship or graduate - whichever comes first.

Yes that is exactly what I will be doing as well. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate it!

I believe your dental school that accepted you must fill in your disadvantage form.

gosh darn it, they told me on the phone twice that my undergrad school could fill it out (which I assumed was more convenient because my undergrad school knows more about my financial situation than the dental school which didn't even have me send my financial documents until June) . I almost feel like this makes me not want to ever be part of the NHSC because of all these discrepancies but of course everything on here is speculation. Thanks for your reply 🙂

No worries! I too made the same mistake but my undergrad school caught my mistake and told me they could not do it. But of course I sent it to both undergrad and dental school to be safe. And my dental school filled it out after I answered some questions and provided documentation of those answers. The NHSC are horrible with answers, as I'm sure the ones that answer the phone are unaware of the answers themselves.

Wow, that's so good your undergrad didn't sign it and you got it in! I guess I will know for next year if I reapply! I guess it was naive of me to believe that the people that answer the phones of a government agency would know the answers when it is their job to know... Lol

True about finding out the HPSP before NHSC, but I wouldn't tell anyone to base it off of disadvantaged status. I am one of the least disadvantaged people you could find (dad is a dentist, got full-ride scholarship to undergrad thus no undergrad debt, etc) and I still got the scholarship. Apply for both, especially since they aren't at the same time. If you get HPSP, then keep it. If not, try the NHSC.

...Although, that doesn't really answer the original question. You can apply for both, but only in the order I said above, which is lame, but the only way to do it unless you want NHSC over the HPSP, then maybe try NHSC and then HPSP for a 3 year? Although I hear those are rare nowadays.

Coo, can you give us a bit of insight to the process? When were you actually notified of the award? Did you get a credit check Mid-June?

If you have no established credit, how could you check and see if they had did a credit check on you??

Does anyone know how many applicants there are this year???

Go to credit karma or the equifax website. Regardless if you have no credit or not, it will show it pulled, if I remember my finance background correctly.

Would I have to make an account?

do you guys know when we should hear back on the final decision?

Base on last year posts, late August is when ppl start consigning contracts.
I think that if you are named a finalist, that means you will receive the contract. I believe that may be decided sometime later in July if it is consistent with the last couple of years.

I got my credit checked by Credco 6/14 . Just checked it through equifax... had to pay the $15.95 to see it but I saw it! Does that mean I have a good chance of getting the scholarship?

My credit score is not the best, but it's good.
