Does anyone know the exact qualifications for EFN? I was told by both the NHSC and my undergrad school that's since I received a federal pell grant in undergrad I qualify. I didn't have my credit checked so I'm wondering if that was a reason it was thrown out?

I don't know if this help, but I received federal pell grants as well, however I read into the EFN and did not receive a scholarship for EFN from my school. Therefore I'm not qualified under the EFN. I think it just depends if your school even has the EFN available or not.

I also received a federal pell grant in undergraduate and did not qualify as EFN for my dental school.

It's definitely confusing as there are no criteria for it. And I'm sorry to hear your school made a mistake on your application. 🙁

Well, I don't even know if my school made a mistake. The people I talked to multiple times from the BHW said I qualified so who knows?

I called them as well, they told me to qualify or EFN I would have to have gotten a perkins loan, not a pell grant. I'm pretty sure those people aren't the ones directly in charge of the NHSC SP since they answer questions for the NHSC loan, nurse corps, etc. That's why whenever I ask them a question they don't seem very confident lol. And I'm pretty sure the perkins loan thing is wrong too bc the document clearly states the name of the scholarship we had to have gotten in order to qualify.

I also got my credit checked 6/14. I didn't have the pdf issue.
 
What's the reason for a credit check? Just curious. Would having a car loan automatically disqualify you?
 
So now we wait for about another month, right? Last year the finalists were contacted on 7/21 and the year before on 7/24.
 
Just out of curiosity, how many of you identified as disadvantaged? I was not EFN but did apply with what appears to be Priority 2 status.

The EFN worksheet refers specifically to an old federal scholarship program that was discontinued in the 1990's. The reason why this is asked is because the NHSC gives priority to those applicants who never received the EFN. If your financial aid counselor indicated that you received that scholarship, they are either wrong or you are quite old. Receipt of a Pell Grant, institutional scholarship, or other needs-based award does not equate to receiving the EFN.

Whale, do you know the reasoning why priority is given to those who haven't had received it? I never received one and was surprised to hear that having received EFN grants was actually a disadvantage for priority consideration

This is mostly related to the NHSC Loan Repayment Program, but the reasoning carries over into the scholarship. The NHSC won't give scholarships/loan repayment assistance to students for periods that were covered by the EFN award. So you can't receive both an NHSC scholarship and an EFN. Less relevant now that the EFN has been discontinued for so long, but for some reason they still ask. It has zero bearing on your application at this point. They care much more about the certification of disadvantaged status form.

Thank you so much for your information. How did you find all of this out, what sources did you use (if calling them directly gets false information..) ? I am even more confused now lol
 
So uhh... Looking at last year's thread... 9 people who had their credit checked in June received the award. Only 4 did not. So I'm guessing having your credit check means you will most likely get the award?

Whale, this is great information. Thank you. Do you know, historically, what percentage of accepted applicants were disadvantaged?

Very interesting. If you look at the NHSC scholarship application guide for 2016-17, page 9 states that first priority funding is given to those who actually received EFN.

What you're telling me makes sense to me, but not sure why the application guide says that EFN status may actually prioritize an applicant.

Thank you for this! I think I didn't explain what I meant very well--you can't receive EFN & the NHSC at the same time, which is a moot point since EFN no longer exists. There is still no need to worry about not having received EFN as only very old applicants will have had that scholarship at any point in their lifetime.

Thanks again for this information, Whale. So, basically, at this point - there are only two tiers of priority? Since the first tier applies to a minuscule number of applicants?

It doesn't seem like we should put much stock into who gets their credit checked. It's in the guidelines that it's a normal part of the review process.

I think what we assumed was that in order to still be considered, you had to at least have had your credit checked since as you said, it is a normal part of the review process.
 
So I guess if my credit wasn't checked I must have screwed up the application technically? Good to know. Makes me feel better to be rejected on a technicality instead of that they actually don't want me lol

We don't know for certain. Someone posted earlier that maybe there were people that got the scholarship last year that never reported having their credit checked.

No I think you would need your credit checked in order to get the scholarship. It seems like a logical step in the process. I've come to terms with it lol. Everything happens for a reason. I can always apply next year and I'll likely be looking into the NHSC loan repayment program. So if anyone has experience with that second one, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

From what I've read in the many post of Loan Repayment Program, it is a 25k additional salary that you must request when working for underserved health clinic. Once approved of the site (required number changes throughout the year), you will get the 25k tax free bonus every year. Also, the longer you stay with a clinic the more of a boost your bonus will increase. I hope that helps. I wouldn't worry too much about it as many dentists usually apply for this in their 4th year as a student thats preparing to graduate.

That does help! Exactly, I'm trying not to worry about it yet, but it's nice to know that it's there, since I still do want to work with underserved populations. Hopefully it's not nearly as competitive as this scholarship lol. Thank you for the clarification!

I think you should put quite a bit of stock into getting your credit checked. It costs the NHSC money to do credit checks so I don't think they would do it unless you were being seriously considered. Especially because the majority of those who get their credit checked every other year on this forum get the scholarship.

I agree with @FatherOrangeJuice , from last year and the years before, those who got their credit check were in the finalists round. And a handful of them got the award thereafter. I understand everything is a process, but what isn't a process? You have to go through a process (filtration) in order to receive the award. Process is just another technical term for review and filtration.

Are those that are named finalists given the scholarship? This was my impression from reading the past few threads.

I think DO is competing with MD applicants for primary health. Whereas Dental applicants are just competing among themselves. Could also be due to the number of applicants for each fields. Dental was only around 300 (2015 cycle).

Don't worry. You got your credit checked... So I pretty much guarantee you will get the scholarship. Like 80% chance I bet.
 
@FlossBoss19 after further review, I don't think your theory of having your credit checked and having a complete application is correct. It seems that if you were not given the award last year, then that would make you the ONLY dental student to have their credit checked but not receive the scholarship.

If there are any dental students besides @FlossBoss19 from 2015 and @DentalElle from 2014 who had their credit checked and did not receive the scholarship, please chime in. I want to settle this credit check dilemma once and for all. Every dental student over the past few years who had their credit checked except for these two ended up receiving the award. Correct me if I am wrong.
 
My credit was checked last year but I didn't receive the scholarship last year

I was not the only one last year who did not receive the scholarship after getting credit checked. There were at least 4 others. Also I have friends at my school who also got their credit checked but did not receive it last year. Your theory that almost everyone who gets their credit checked gets the scholarship is not really logical because the credit this year and previous year was checked before the review period started (6/14/16 credit checked but review period is 6/14/16 - 7/1/16 according to HRSA) . So if they were going to award everyone who got their credit checked with the scholarship, why would they start the review process after checking the credit?
Go back to previous years' thread and check how many got their credit checked and how many of those received the scholarship. Many who did not receive the scholarship, ended up not posting anything when the finalist emails were sent. Also sdn in a small world, 500-600 dental students apply each year and very few of them are actually on here posting.
 
@portlandstateofmind, @cmbooth12, @madam noire, @aspiringdoc2019hopeful are some those who got credit checked on 6/11 last year but never said they received the scholarship. Maybe they can chime in?
Also I don't think credit check has to do anything with what discipline you are
 
Or they stopped posting because they were finalists.. I feel like people who didn't get the scholarship after having their credit checked are more likely to post on here and complain that they didn't get it... And in the last three years I only see two concrete examples of dental students who had their credit checked but didn't receive the scholarship. Even if sdn is a small sample size, there is still a good probability that the chances can be applied to those applying at large. If what you're saying is true about having others in your school having their credit checked but not getting the scholarship, then I guess I'm wrong
