It's a cool story.

I am interested how they managed OMTrash given her religious background. My school was militant about clothing so we can pretend to feel somatic dysfunction better. Seems like she made the arrangement work, good for her and good for the school.

Not very familiar with OMM but the article mentions same-sex OMM partner and long clothing. Most schools seem to be accommodating (considering there are a lot of Jewish and Muslim medical students). I’m honestly more amazed by the fact that she graduated first in her class.

There are undoubtedly many brilliant women in this community (and other ultra-religious traditional communities) who aren’t able to fulfill their potentials because of outdated, backward beliefs about womanhood. Dr. Friedman is lucky that her upbringing was in the secular world, or else she would have never received the basic grade school education that would have allowed her to pass introductory college classes, let alone excel in medical school. And she is lucky that her rabbi was “progressive” enough to permit her to further her education, when many would have told her to just focus on housework or part-time retail jobs.

It is not unusual to make accommodations for students in OMM. They get a dispensation from their rabbi or imam with respect to clothing and who they can examine or can examine them. We have a couple every year and seems to work fine.

What an amazing woman and family! Granted, older children often assist with the rearing of young ones, yet it is still is a spectacular achievement for her and the family, especially when their community wasn't very supportive. Makes all the complaints by others about the additional studying required for OMM seem rather pathetic. Congrats Dr. Friedman! Well done!

I understand, my school didn't really have tolerance. Maybe things changed.
