NO INTERVIEW CLUB

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to Tuoro, Buffalo, NYU, Tufts, BU, Stony Brook, Rutgers, Maryland, Temple and Meharry

Hopefully we will both soon be writing that we are leaving this group! Goodluck to you!

All, I will be honest with you and everyone reading this forum. I am starting to become a little worried that my stats are not good enough, and will not grant me any interviews. I still do have a little hope that someone will find the treasure buried within my application, but I don't know. I really hope I do not need to do this process all over again.

I'll copy and paste my response from the Marquette thread, because it basically explains everything in a nutshell. I applied to Marquette, Tufts, Minnesota, Louisville, A.T. Still School of Dentistry (for community service), Midwestern-AZ (rejected already), UoP in California, and University of Florida just for kicks and giggles (their OOS is really, really unlikely). I've heard no word from any school but my rejection from MWAZ. Anyways, here you go:

Little below the Average DAT score (medical issues, in which I did not try to obtain accommodations for (I know it's my fault) played a role in my poor DAT score and have been addressed to all schools via explanation letter that I requested to be attached to my file.), little low of a cGPA (3.33 - still finishing one semester in undergrad); however, the rest of my application is extremely strong:
  • 1,500 volunteer hours, including volunteering in an underprivileged dental clinic for 2 years
  • Decent shadowing hours
  • Hundreds of hours of undergraduate research experience (researching by myself and 2 advisors) that relates to the dental field and has not been researched in the world before
  • Letter of recommendation from a professor that teaches at Marquette school of dentistry
  • 2 other letter of recommendations from top science professors at my college,
  • and a letter of recommendation form a doctor (volunteer supervisor) that serves on the admissions board at a medical college for residency
  • President of the Pre-Health club at my school
  • perfect personal statement.

It's probably my DAT and sGPA that hindered my chances. I've already been offered and guaranteed a spot in the Pharmacy school that the Medical College of Wisconsin is just opening up which is only 3 years long, but I just can't see myself as a pharmacist. I'll work on re-taking my DAT if nothing happens elsewhere this year, and possibly find a dental assistant job.

I come from a family background where my dad never obtained a GED, and my mom obtained an accounting degree, we are financially unstable and everything that I own, I had to work for. Not saying working part time and going to school full time is my excuse for poor GPA, but I think it plays a role (no, I'm not trying to get sympathy).

I suffer from clinical diagnosed depression, and this whole experience, between a crappy DAT and no interviews is taking a huge toll on me, currently. However, I'm not giving up until I accomplish my dream. It would have been just really convenient because all of my family lives in WI, and it would be my state school, but I just need to roll with the punches.

I'm so sad... It looks like every one in here start to leave this forum, except for me.

I'm still here starting to get a little nervous now that everyone is getting interviews to the schools I applied to.

Hey all, just hang in there! I know I hated it when people said it to me, but it is still early. I finally received one interview invite earlier this week. I didn't even think I was going to get one to be honest. I have friends in dental that said that the time to worry would be in late October so we are still far away from that. Continue to surround yourself with positive vibes!

What are your DAT scores? It sounds like you are pretty confident in yourself with everything else....

Embarrassingly a 17AA, Highest subsection score of a 20 in PAT and lowest subsection score of a 16. I think I'm screwed due to my low DAT and GPA, unfortunately. This sucks, I wish I could prove myself to them somehow. I wish I had an extra $440 to take my DAT again, this minute, to just show them I'm worth it to their dental school.

It seems like you obviously have potential, there are many people who don't have a 20 in PAT. Look at it from a positive angle, we still have plenty of time to be offered an interview. And if (God forbid) you've got to go at it again next cycle then you've got room for improvement and at least you know where you can strengthen your application!

Do schools keep extending interviews week by week? Or is it like one large batch of invites and then another batch months later??

That I'm not too sure to be honest. I've noticed some schools do it on a weekly basis, whereas Marquette for instance seems to send all OOS invites one day and all in-state another day. Just my observation, so don't quote me on that 😛 This whole process is just a circus.

Your correct about Marquette's process.

Do you users think that I should give AT Still a phone call today, or would that be too pushy on my part? My application has been completed with them since 8/17/16. Have heard nothing for a month now.

It won't matter if you do or don't. They'll tell you when there is an update, you'll be notified by email. Any updates you have to share, notify them by email. If you feel like it, give them a call. It won't make or break you.

Quick Question... what is the difference between "application complete" and "application under review" in AADSAS? and does this really reflect the application process?

From my understanding, "under review" could mean that they are checking if you have all of the required documents for a complete application or they are reviewing your application to see if they want to invite you; "application complete" just means that you have all of the required documents in and your file will soon be sent for review by the admissions committee.

So is one better than the other?

I am sorry you were rejected from MWU-AZ, you sound like a great applicant aside from your DAT. I would borrow money from a family member or drive for Uber for a few days to scrape together the $440 and prove that you can handle the curriculum. This is your investment in your future, don't let a few hundred dollars decide where you will go to school and whether you will get in.

Marquette and Tufts will be very difficult with your DAT, and UoP will almost certainly not happen (they average a 22 or 23aa if I remember correctly). You may have a chance at A.T. Still, but they are far more selective than their stats would have you believe. They get like 3,500 applicants and only accept ~150 students (80 of whom actually attend). I don't know much about Minn or Louisville, but I do think that you should do whatever it takes to retake the DAT.

Im in the no interview club as well! It's pretty nerve wracking and the dental school nightmares are beginning. I applied to Ohio state, wvu, Louisville, and Vcu. 3.79 overall and science gpa. 21 aa, 22 ts, 21 pat

@Caution keep your head up buddy you have good stats and im sure interviews will come. Its still very early and I believe with your drive to become a dentist it will be achieved. Stay positive and try do something you enjoy daily to help keep you sane. I've been going to the gym and playing sports to stay positive and distracted from checking my emails every 10 mins.

0 interviews STILL 😢 completed 7/15, 24AA/24PAT, ~3.8GPA, won 1st in a research conference, tons of ECs/shadowing/volunteering, and I wrote the personal statement of a lifetime, which was thoroughly edited and eventually praised by my friend who is a D1 at Harvard. I poured my heart, soul and literally my entire life's worth into this application.

I have no idea why I have no interviews. Maybe the DAT was just a cruel joke played on applicants by dental schools, because clearly it has no bearing on admissions chances? I guess that's good if you have a low DAT... anyway, guys, let me be an example that stats don't matter at all.

Maybe it's because I'm a member of the LGBT community and that isn't cool with dental schools? I did write about my struggle with that in my personal statement and how it led me to a career that will allow me to break down injustices in healthcare inequality. I actually can't think of any other plausible explanation.

My heart is breaking.

This is so odd. I am sorry you haven't heard back with any interviews yet :/ You seem like a top notch applicant with everything required to be competitive, with more than just amazing stats.

Which schools did you apply to?
Maybe you should give each school a call to see what is going on with apps and if they have even looked at them yet..that has to be the only explanation. Let's hope it is not discrimination

Thank you for the kind words <3 I applied to 10 schools (6 (OSU/UM/Harvard/Penn/Conn/UC Denver) were complete 7/15, I applied to 4 more (Case/Iowa/Minnesota/Buffalo) more on 9/15 because I'm terrified). I haven't heard back from a single school yet. What scares me most of all, I think, is that if it was discrimination (which I seriously doubt and hope would never happen), LGBT discrimination is still legal in this country so I couldn't do anything about it.

I willing to bet the house that you'll eventually get multiple interviews.

I hope you're right. I have a friend with very similar stats, and he's already interviewed at 2 ivy schools, so I wagered him $50 that I will not get a single interview because I am just the least lucky person on earth. So far, at least it looks like I'm making $50 😉

Have you ever considered maybe it is because of what your family did to the Starks that Dental Schools are not being friendly to you? All jokes aside, I'm not sure why you haven't received anything. You're right that stats don't matter all the time. Don't give up. I bet you will get an interview soon and many more will follow. Where did you apply?

I listed the schools I applied to in the comment above 🙂

But like, come on, you know I don't affiliate myself with THOSE Lannisters... I'm my own man (plus Daenerys, a few armies and some dragons).

I'd be willing to bet that you will have had to choose between multiple acceptances by April 1st.

Hang in there everyone! We have a long, long way to go. Whenever I start to feel antsy I read old Interview/Acceptances topics from previous cycles. It's pretty comforting seeing people post the exact same concerns around this time last year, only to now have "class of 2020!" in their signature.

@PeterDinklageDDS Many of those schools are public schools that extend interviews to few OOS so no matter how great your stats are, they can find someone As good or better suited to what they are looking for.

Next, you have chosen some of the hardest private schools to get into, Harvard as well as UPenn.

I'm willing to bet you will definitely get some interviews down the line, HOWEVER, you applied to none of the mid tier schools such as NYU BU Tufts Roseman etc etc.

Thus it is not suprising you have no interview invites yet. You just applied to some of the hardest schools to get into OOS. You might not ever get them. Also you did not apply to ANY of the lower stat schools: Lecom touro une ecu etctec

I'm willing to bet money that if you had chosen schools like nyu bu etc etc you would have had invites. You are banking on having great stats to land you interviews and trust me there are plenty with better stats. Just gotta bite your pride and apply to some other schools.

I cannot apply to the schools you listed because I don't have a DDS rec letter or because I used AP credit for some pre reqs. I applied to every single school that didn't eliminate me based on those criteria.

Even if I could apply to those schools, I'd rather attend my instate school (which actually hasn't even given IS interview offers yet) than every single one you listed. And I have a better chance of getting into my state school than the ones you listed. So I'm not sure how applying to additional private or for-profit dental schools will help.

Finally, your point about OOS schools would make sense if it wasn't for the several OOS SDN members with lower stats that submitted to the same schools after or around when I did, and got interviews within weeks. I'm thinking stats don't just not matter much, they don't matter at all. The problem isn't my application, it's me. I'm not trying to get 10 interviews, dude, I'm just trying to get 1.

Just wait a bit more man. As you said your IS hasn't even responded yet. Also many many people get in on post dec interviews. It's the end of September, but you just gotta be patient. There's still the whole month of October.
