No interviews yet....anyone in the same boat?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They wouldn't say it because they do want to encourage URMs with lower stats to apply.

And, if this is the case, they'd never say/admit it specifically because of the vast implications and controversy surrounding race. Can you imagine seeing something to effect of "Those below 32Q and 3.80 GPA are discouraged from applying except X"?

LizzyM, if one gets invited for an interview in January with the interview scheduled in February, is he/she pretty much interviewing for the waitlist? I looked up the profiles of applicants last cycle, and it seems that they got either rejected or waitlisted at most of the schools they got invited to in January.

It depends on the school... some schools don't make any offers until March so every applicant has a (theoretically) equal chance of being offered admission.

Another thing to consider is that the applicants who are interviewed late in the season either 1) applied late and/or 2) were not as strong as those who were interviewed earlier in the season. So, it might stand to reason that many of them would be waitlisted whereas those who were interviewed early are being recruited heavily with early offers of admission, merit aid, etc.

It is possible to interview on the last possible date and be offered admission.

LizzyM, one last question.

I just received my fall 2011 grades and I don't know whether I should send them as an update. I received a A- in Biochemistry, B in Analytical Chem, A in Analytical Chem Lab, Grade Deferred for Ind Study, B in Toxicology, and A- in Int Latin. The semester with a 3.42 (not counting the Grade Deferred for Ind Study) is a slight drop from my junior year GPAs of 3.72 and 3.63. Grade Def for Ind study most likely turns into an A so the semester gpa would be 3.52.

Thus, should I send my fall transcript as an update and emphasize my A- in Biochem (B- and C+ in orgo I and II) and how do the two B's (unfortunate) look?

You took Latin in med school :caution::confused:

Hi LizzyM, I'm on the same boat and I was curious as to how you view my situation.

c3.58/s3.6/36O (13/10/13) from California

submitted 25 secondaries mostly in August
so far: 1 interview, 2 pre-interview holds, 5 rejections (3 reaches, 2 matches based on stats; 1 pre-secondary)

Do you think my lack of interview invites is due to gpa, timing, residency, or something on my application?

Thanks :D

27O(9/9/9), 3.29sGPA. 3.44cGPA. excellent LORs and ECs
so far i have had one MD interview, 4 DOs, and been waitlisted at the MD and accepted at one DO. im still waiting on another state school to respond (would prefer to stay in state) just curious how an MD program views me

Not trying to burst anyone's bubble...but isn't this thread about no interviews?

Please don't hijack this thread to talk about your interviews in a thread about people STILL WAITING BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO INTERVIEWS.

That's disgustingly selfish and disrespectful to the people who come here for support.

Start your own thread and title it "Help me LizzyM".

If your semester gpa is less than your current total gpa, I'd advise against sending an update that includes grades.

Bingo. I'm facing my third application cycle- I don't want to hear about your interviews with a lower MCAT and similar GPAs.

Brother, I really respect your commitment. I really, really hope you get in. Don't quit on your dream, and keep fighting.

Brother, I'm in my third application cycle (with 0 interviews my first two cycle) and let me advise you with something. Your negative attitude definitely will not help you in the long run

I think if LizzyM were up for it, a thread along the lines of "ask a random ad com anything" would be extremely helpful to avoid thread hijacks in the threads where lizzym posts.

Good luck to all of you, I hope you get an interview after the holiday break.

I'm wondering if retaking MCATS and getting possibly high 30's like 39 or 40 will make a difference in getting an interview INVITE, if the jump is from a 36. Do you think that will grant me an interview somewhere? (currently sitting on 36 with not a single invite after applying to 13 schools. )

School list? (i.e. top tiers only, regional schools only)

When did you complete your application?

Thanks very much.

Unfortunately, my situation is not as simple as retaking a few classes and reapplying. If I were in more of a position to advance my competitiveness for next cycle, I'd agree with you that pessimism is simply wasting time better spent working to make myself a better candidate. Why did both of you two call me brother? Odd.

Keep seeing "Inbox (1)" on my perpetually-open Gmail tab... only to click over and see that it's spam.

If it makes you feel any better, I once woke up to six emails... all spam. Christmas is coming- I clearly must enlarge my (imaginary) penis (yes, this is a very common email). Also, I know how to meet sexy singles over 50, buy a genie bra, refinance my home, print coupons, buy viagra, buy an organic nonstick pan, and many more that I didn't read. In addition, I seem to get one email per day alerting me that somebody ran a background check on me. Also, I've gotten two today that had no sender, no subject, and no content. The worst of all, though, was an update from my top choice school saying that the email isn't an interview, but that their interviews will be finished by 1/20. That was fun. :(

Lemme tell you something then son, or sister (whatever you prefer if you don't like the word brother). Most people here who reapply, especially those who reapply for the third time, do not have it as simple either. We know that it's not just about simply retaking classes to make up your GPA or retaking the MCAT for a better score. Do extra volunteering, get extra clinical experiences, do something that shows your commitment to the community. As those experiences pile up, you will probably mature more, which in turn will be noticed by the adcom. Your petty excuses and venting about how you're in the worst situation possible isn't gonna help with anything. Maybe these traits of yours were noticed by the schools when they read your app and decided that you were not the right type of person for their school.
I know nothing about your situation, but one thing that I get out of your comments is that you're definitely not doing yourself any good by posting negative comments. Be positive, look forward, and see how you can improve yourself. Hopefully better luck will be with you in the future. There's plenty of people out there who has suffered through similar situations

P.S. My situation wasn't as simple, but I've made it through 3 cycles too, so if you want some advice, PM me and I'll be more than happy to help you there

BrandNewDay is a lady ("imaginary penis" mentioned in previous post). Haha, I think that's why she thought it was odd to be called brother. "Son" probably won't work either. =]

Thank you, Kangaroo. I'm sure the gender confusion has nothing to do with my penis-possessing avatar. IS IT SO WRONG TO BE IN LOVE WITH NPH?

Well, kind of, being that he's gay, married (I think), and has twins. But still.

Yes in hindsight I needed to apply wider range. I can only look forward and improve my app and apply early next cycle... But that is why I was asking whether it's worth trying to up my mcat to high 30s.

Holy-top-heaviness. Good lord.
Besides Jeff are those all top 25?

Yes, they are either top 30ish or have some of the lowest acceptance rates considering the number of applications.

Well, we solved your problem.

Boston, temple, mayo, jeff are not top 25...

I was about the rip into you for the ignorance and lack of perspective that this post showed, but other posters have done so more intelligently and eloquently than I could have hoped to.

I went by average mcats according to the MSAR. I don't see how you consider my chances grossly ignorant. Could you elaborate?

I wouldn't say your choices were ignorant except that you should have also applied to some "safety" schools with lower average MCAT/GPA (as opposed to lower rankings).

How is your GPA compared to the schools you applied to? (I know your GPA is a 3.66, which is only a little higher than the average matriculant for all schools, not just the top schools)

Also, we don't know much about your EC's. If your only at the average MCAT/GPA for these schools you would have to stick out in some other way.

Back to your original question: I wouldn't retake the MCAT unless you are 100% you could get a 3+ jump. At the level you're performing that will be hard. I really think it is just the caliber of schools you applied to, and applying earlier would help too.

Also, the season isn't over (except for Mayo, which I believe only interviews through the fall semester)! You still have time to hear back! Good luck! :xf:

Thanks for your encouragement, lilkangaroo, I really appreciate it.

Sorry ladies and gentleman...just got my first interview invite...OOS

Congrats! I think people getting invites from this thread gives more hope to others than anything else.

I heard Santa used to sit on the admissions committee at North Pole College of Human and Reindeer Medicine.

Well, the year is winding down.

Still just one II, one pre-secondary rejection from UC Davis (lulz), and well over a dozen waiting games currently being played. What can I draw from my situation? Does it mean they're just "holding" me for later? Have they not gotten to me yet? It's been at least a good two months for all schools since marked complete (one month for a few late submitted secondaries). The only shred of optimism I have at this point, II not withstanding, is the fact that I haven't been rejected anywhere. I guess the II means there aren't any red flags, although I don't feel 100% comfortable in making that assumption. Will I just be hammered with a slew of rejections come March? It'll be interesting to see what the next coming month or so brings.

Seriously, most people in this thread would be ecstatic to receive acceptance by an LCME-accredited school in north pole.

Hopefully next year brings some good news...0 MD interviews, 0 rejections. Happy to report I have 2 DO interviews.

Nj resident, 3.5 gpa, 32 mcat. No II, looking forward to next year.

I just got a few interviews in the last few weeks after most people said there were none left. Don't lose hope, they're still going out for sure!

Are they still giving out II from now to New Year? Or it only picks up after Jan 3rd?

Some schools work up to the actual holidays, but others take a slow route around the holiday times..I would expect it to pick up again after new years
