I have noticed that many people are worried about the TFE section on the PAT because line counting does not work as well as it once did. I thought that it might be helpful to share a technique that I used during my studies that helped me learn how to visualize the image as opposed to relying on counting lines. I only used this study technique several times, but I saw considerable improvement afterwards.

Upon completion of a PAT test, both CDP and Achiever provide a 3D image of the shape for each TFE question. When I reviewed the TFE section after completing PAT practice tests, I would look at the 3D shape and two of the three sides in the question. I would then draw out what the third side should look like. After doing this, I would of course check my image to make sure that it was correct. You can do this for any of the three sides. Also, when given the 3 sides, it is equally (if not more) helpful to draw out the 3D image. This really gets you to use those perceptual abilities.

I found that it really helped me learn how to mentally translate the 2D images in the question into 3D. You begin to pick up on subtle patterns and train your mind how to conjure the image in your head, something very useful for the TFE section. It also helps you visualize what certain lines will look like and where they should be oriented if an answer is meant to be correct. You can eliminate incorrect answers more quickly as well.

I hope that this helps those of you studying for this section of the PAT. Best of luck!
