Hello,
Is anyone aware of any pharmacy schools that do not require physics as a pre-req? I'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma right now. I only have a handful of pre-reqs left before I transfer, but it doesn't appear that I will be able to finish them before fall 2011 admissions because all of the classes are sequenced. Basically all I have left to take is Organic 2, Calc 1, and Physics 1 (and 2 depending on the university), but I cannot take physics until I finish Intro to Principles of Physics and Calc 1. I cannot take the Calc 1 course until I take Pre-calc/Trig. I only have 2 semesters to fulfill these requirements. I hate the idea of waiting until 2012, an entire year, to be able to transfer just because of 1 or 2 classes. Are there any pharmacy schools that don't require physics? I'd appreciate any advice! 🙂

I dont know any schools that dont require physics. But why not take the algrebra based physics and ask the school if it transfers. it seems like you are aiming for the calculus based type.

I remember U of Pittsburgh didn't require physics a few years ago, not sure about now. Anyway, I think AACP or someone else has a website of what schools require what prereqs, not sure where it is though.

Edit: here we go, took about 10 minutes of googling, but I found it.

There are quite a few schools that don't require it.

Community colleges tend to be more lenient when it comes to pre-requisites for intro level classes; if you haven't looked into that yet, that'd be my next step...

One of my friends asked me that the other day since he doesn't have the physics requirement either. I looked up a couple options for him but didn't do the whole list. Below is the list I came up with but if these places are not where you want to go, you can look each school up individually at PharmCAS.

Samford University

Touro University (CA)

Regis University

I believe UGA in Athens also does not require physics but you might want to double check that. Also if you're not from GA, it looks like they only accept 2% of their class from out of state.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to take a look at the links provided now. I really appreciate the help. 🙂

Alternatively, you can take the math placement test to get out of the pre-req for calculus. That's what I would do. Most schools require (at least) one semester of physics. Also, I have never heard of a school that requires students to take the Intro course before the General course.

Even though it's required I feel it's better to take it to get ahead of the game.

Both of the Canadian schools I'm applying to this winter don't require physics.

😕??? How have people not taken calculus. That's 8th grade stuff -_- At worst ... should have finished it by 10th or 11th grade in HS...

Calculus in 8th grade? Really?

Took it at caltech during the summer between 8th and 9th grade. My parents actually thought I should have learned it sooner...

And a lot of my graduating class in hs finished calc by 10th/11th grade.... I'd guess probably at least 60 or 70 people out of a class of 500.

In case you forgot, I have two engineering degrees :-/ I'm woefully over-mathed for pharm school.

I think it's more that you implied that its unusual not do have calc done by 8th grade in your post.

I was done with pre-calc by the end of my freshman year in high school, but I was the only one in my grade who had done so. It's not very typical to reach calc at such a young age.

Exactly. My son just started at a magnet middle school for math and science. He will complete 4.5 yrs of math in the three yrs of middle school according to their schedule. Right now he is starting pre-Algebra. I assume by the end of 8th grade he will be part-way through pre-calc or ready to start AP Calculus, but I will find out at the open house. This is a very accelerated program in our public school system and rather unusual. Most kids in this system would be lucky to be able to start Algebra in 8th grade, and most don't due to lack of opportunity (and preparation by the school).

When I went to school in the dark ages, the track was Algebra 1 in 8th grade, then Geom, Alg2 and Trig, and Advanced Math/pre-calc, culminating in AP Calculus in 12th grade. That was considered accelerated back then.

shrug. most students I know from asia and the UK learned calculus & trig by age 16-17. If/when I have kids, I'm not going to have them settle for american educational standards ... its weak...

And I meant it's unusual to not have taken calculus by the 2nd year of college .... thats a LONG time to finish off 1 math class.

Wow I kinda feel inferior about all this Cal work. I took Calculus my junior year of HS and I thought it was moderately difficult! :/ Gonna take it once i finish trig and pre-cal in my local CC

Am I supposed to clap? I dont get it.😕

Too bad many schools don't accept classes that were taken more than 5-10 years ago. So if you took Calculus in 8th grade, you may have to take it again...........IN COLLEGE (*GASP!!!!*) :diebanana:
