yes, will be in med2 this september.

So, DrRichie and mcdbruins, you both have interview on 9th? or 10th?

Members don't see this ad :)
Yes, I am having my HKU interview tmr.

PS: Just some updated information abt CU. The list for june and july interivew is out. And the admission is contacting ppl to attend either the June 17th or July 14th interview. If you choose the july one, details will only be sent out in early July.

Good luck everyone.

I also have mine tmr, what time u have urs? I have mine in the afternoon. Do you know if those who have their interview on 9th are those having higher chance to get accepted? or they just randomly assigned?

They are just randomly assigned I guess. But I request for a specific time and date as I have to fly back shortly afterwards for my finals and commencement.

Good luck to all of us today!

I think i did poorly>< i was too nervous today.
how about urs?
you hv any idea when the result will be released?

Don't worry, I think many people were on the same boat. I bombed it as well. Were you the girl (forth person) who walked into the waiting room? I was too nervous as well and missed a lot of important things to say.

Oh yea!!! I am the forth one, which number were u?
btw, any idea when the result will be released? I heard from my friend ( who got accepted through non jupas last year) saying that the result usually get released in 3-4 days, at most in a week!!!! Now getting nervous?
Do you know how much they weigh on the interview?? or GPA is still the most important thing they look at?

Hey , by the way, I heard there were like less than 48 ppl being interviewed these two days, so u know if that means more than half of us will be given offer?

Thanks for sharing the info DrPatricia and richie,=)

Hmm...I agree with DrRichie that many of us felt like we flunked the interview...dun stress out and sweat over it...coz you might have done a lot better than you thought. and it's done already...so there's nothing much that we can do right now.

I asked the 2 ladies who called ppl in and checked their IDs abt when we would know the results. According to her, the med. admin ppl will hold a meeting somewhere in late june...so she said we should be able to figure that out by the end of june.

but a week before the interview i called the faculty of med and the person whom I spoke with told me that as soon as both dates of interviews were done...they will have meeting to sort out the accepted ppl...and she said earliest can be 2-3 days.

I am not sure which one to go with...but...

darn it..i should be studying for my finals...but i am worry as hell....=(

So do you think Interivew is the determining factor ?

Good luck to us!!!

Hey Patricia, if you were the fourth person walking into the waiting room with me and two other dudes, I would have seen you in a flash since I was the first one being interviewed. Too bad I didn't have the chance to meet you. I think they put a significant amount of weight on the interview, like other countries (esp. since we applied through the non-jupas route). I can be wrong though. :)

However, like what mcdbruins said, it's over and there's nothing we can do anyways. Cross our fingers then and hope for the best .

mcdbruins, Good luck on your exams and have fun on your convocation. Don't forget to send me our pics :D. Take lots of pics on your convo and post them on facebook as well.

Patricia, if you are still in HK, we can meet up. :)

My frd, who is also an oversea degree holder, got an email from hku informing him that he got accepted and asking for his local correspondence address so that they can send him the official offer letter ytd. I then called HKU up and asked. The lady whom I spoke to told me that they had sent a few of such emails to successful applicants who do not provide them with a local address on the applications. And said that the results should be available Monday or sometimes next week online. I wanted to ask further but she seemed impatient....

so i guess even if u dun get such email, it doesnt mean ur application is in peril...I tried to get a confirmation from her that those who havent received emails still have a chance of being accepted...but she wouldnt tell me anymore....

so let's have our fingers crossed.

mcdbruins in despair....

T-T I feel my chance is getting zero. . .:(
is ur friend very brilliant from ivy league ?

The result is available online now. you can check the application status.
I got rejected....
Summa Cum laude, highest department honors, Senior Research Awards, UCLA undergraduate research scholars......etc...they dun care.

Good luck guys.

I just checked and I am still under consideration. ..
what does that mean. . .
I dont even get rejected or accepted. .
its kinda bothering. . :(

i called the lady but she told me the result should be available by the end of this week. . .
did u overlook ? mcdbruins?

I just found out I was rejected too. Oh well, I accepted CUHK's offer already. It might be a blessing in disguise. People working in CUHK are sooo much nicer and friendlier in my opinion...lol

I am the late comer to this admission game,as I have confirmed my interview on July 14th at CUHK (i think all the interviews at HKU is done by now and CUHK is looking at me the last batch of candidates). Just wanna ask for any general advice for interview, I am truly nervous. Should I wear suit? Please help for those who were accepted into CUHK. Thanks

I have received some PMs concerning the MBChB admission at CUHK. I figure I do post the answer here just so that it can be accessed by everyone interested.

Multiple interviews will be occuring in individual rooms at any one time. Each interview panel consists of 2 professors; one clinical professor and one research professor. They are all assistant deans of the faculty of medicine. An interview typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes and please DO wear a suit.

Now here comes the fun part. Interview questions. What kinda questions are asked? Well, be prepared to answer some of the typicals such as introduce yourself, why do you want to study medicine, etc.

And for many of the non-jupas kids, why medicine in hong kong? Be consistant with this one; you may be asked multiple times with questions phrased differently. I.e. Did you apply to canadian schools? Yes? so what if you got in? What would you do? Would you decline the offer because you like HK? Basically, they don't want you to treat CUHK is your back up. And if you have applied to HKU (accepted or rejected), make damn sure that you know the curriculum differences between the two inside out.

Ethical question may be asked. For me, it was "If a patient refuses blood transfusion due to religious reason and knowing that without such procedure he will likely die. What would you do?"

Anything revolving around your CV is fair game. REALLY knowing your resume is crucial.

Also know the current medical issues in Hong Kong. i.e. medical reform, private-public sector inbalance, the swine flu, etc.

Finally, an interview may conclude with "do you have any questions for us." Come up with something intelligent, don't ask "so when will I be informed of the result of this interview."

Have fun. All the best. Via con dios

Hey,

I got an offer to study medic in HKU under the non-jupas scheme. I'm from Malaysia. Another friend of mine got an offer too but he rejected it for NUS so I'm not sure who's next on the waiting list; if there is a waiting list.

Anyway, I'm very curious to know if there's anybody here who's going to HKU as well, or is already in HKU. I'm hoping to get to know a few people, at least, so that I won't have to feel too lost in Hong Kong since I'm practically going there alone T-T. Ahaha. Thanks! Nice to meet you! :D

hi yourfishyfriend, congratulation!!
I wanna know how do you and yr friend notify for the offer, from e-mail or offical offer letter?
Do you interview on 9/6or 10/6 or in early stage?

Thanks a lot!!

thanks. haha.

i was interviewed in april. can't remember the exact date. i was notified by phone call one week later. :) i think my application is slightly different from yours somewhat. i don't hold a hkid and i'm not a degree holder. not sure if this helps. all the best to you!

I withdrew my CUHK offer already, so there's one more non-JUPAS spot now.....Good luck to those you who are interviewing at CU in July.

Hello everyone...I am new to here~ Anyone got interviewed by CUHK last week? How did it go???

So all the nonJUPAS interview are over for CUHK, but I still have no news from them! :(

What about you guys? As well, How many non-JUPAS do they take ?

nah, its not all over...they still have a set of interviews to be done in late August (you might wish to refer to their website)...From what I have heard of, they will be admitting 50 non-jupas kids this year...SooOO, good luck and don't lose hope :p

How do you know the number? (secret connection???) That's crazy though, that's more than they promise on the website and so where are those extra seats coming from? (at the expenses of JUPAS or EAS?) and if not, does that mean they just increase the class size and hence the future supply of doctors? (last time I checked, HK has one of the highest doctor to population ratio in OECD, so why pump out more?)

not secret connections...only from their website..."The total intake target for first year Medicine in 2009 is 160 students." And from the lady I talked to, I was told that one-third of which would go to non-jupas. (http://www.med.cuhk.edu.hk/v7/s15_05.htm) And yes, both medical schools are admitting more students (10 more students from each route) this year due to the increase in future demand, sooooo good luck everyone. By the way APHL, were you interviewed? or are you already admitted?

It's not entirely true that they are increasing the number of intake due to increased future demand. They do it based on advices from the hospital authority. And if you have read the newspaper, the HA is losing a lot of public doctors to the private sector. Thus, the elevated intake is an attempt to staff the HA with fresh graduates. As you can imagine, a hospital with lots of inexperienced doctors lead by a considerably smaller group of senior staffs may create a problem. Not to mention that, the HA may not have enough resources to train all 320 (both schools) of us. Hence, we may be faced with a similar situation back in the days of 2002 when we graduate. It may be a good thing for those that are seeking admission now, but it's going to be very competitive in the long run.

So, Simpleblue,

Does that mean the hospital will be a training ground for private doctors and when the private market got saturated, we will need to ship ourselves somewhere else? Why would the HA have the authority to decide how many doctors universities are going to educate? I thought the HK medical association would have some say, too.

By the way, sorry for the rant, and please excuse my lack of knowledge, what was it like to be in the days of 2002? I thought 2003 was the nightmare (SARS)

All specialist trainings take place in public hospitals. So yes, in this regard, public hospitals do produce private doctors. The problem is the public sector used to be able to retain much more of its trained physicians. The HA can only recommend the combined quota of med students to be produced. It is nevertheless very influencial since HA controls all public hospitals through government fundings. Yes the medical council does have a say and as far as I know many of them are against the idea of increasing admission intake. Many feel that this is not a long term solution to solve the brain drain to the private sector (correct me if I am wrong here).

I don't remember the exact year actually. It may not be 2002. But what happened was that fundings (hence, the salary cut, long hours, etc) to HA were significantly reduced due to economic downfall. Consequently many of the fresh grads were unable to find placement in public hospitals. Note that this was fixed by decreasing the number of intake (it used to be around 160 per school too!). Read up on these issues if you are interested.

Btw APHL, did you get into cuhk?

Lol. I am never into the bruins vs trojans war. In fact, many of my frds are trojans..=) So I assume you have also applied to hku/cu this year? or just the US med schools?

Let me update my application process since I havent been keeping up with this forum after the decline by hku. So originally i was invited for an interview by CUHK on june 17th. But flying back on june 9th and leaving the same day for my commencement, I decided to postpone it to July 14th thinking that i would waste another ticket if i got into HKU. So abt two weeks after my hku interview I checked online and my application status was "rejected". Called the school and was told that the decision was finalized. No waiting list. No nothing.

On July 14th, I went in for the CU interview. Interviews were conducted in different rooms on level 2 and level 3. On level 2, there were about 5 rooms. Outside the room there was a list of the name and application number of the interviewees (each room has about 20-25 ppl for the whole day). I figured that those with an "s" behind the application number are most likely non-jupas applicants. There were about 5-7 of applicants with a "S" on the list outside of each room.

On July 21st, my dad received a call from CU asking me to turn in additional documents like my most updated transcript and something eg. HKCEE to prove my chinese proficiency. I sent in the necessary documents right away (4am LA times). About 6 hours later (HK time July 22nd at 7pm), my dad received another call from CUHK informing him that I was given an offer. Couple hours later, I received an official email.

So that's the end of my application process. Thanks for all of you who contributed to this forum. For those of you who are still waiting, dont lose heart. Things will work out in the end. If becoming a doctor is the only thing you wanna do and you are determined abt it, you will become one sooner or later. Wish you all good luck~

LOL mcbruins...my situation is EXACTLY the same as yours...got rejected by HKU and then accpted by CUHK a week after the interview...By the way, from your previous wallposts, I guess I might have seen you in the HKU interview...I was probably one of the guys that you saw in the waiting room~
Well, I did not apply to any US med schools as I am only a first year, have you? Got admitted by any of the decent ones? UCLA has a really good Medical School and it is definitely better than HKU and CHUK~

Hey you guys,

I'm also in the same situation!!! they called me up at 3am in the morning on wednesday to ask for the supporting document. I was sleeping then. After the 2nd ring, they ask for my name in cantonese. I was sooo surprise that I could actually speak in Cantonese in my half asleep state.

then the wednesday night, i got an email for acceptance!! I'm not as angry anymore for the wake up

Hope to hear good news from more applicants.

Great job to the acceptantees

Hmm...I was the first one being interviewed on June 9th. In the waiting room, I saw two other guys, both of which from Canada...so I guess the girl you were referring to was not me..=)

Yes, UCLA medical school is a really good one...and in fact many of the med schools here, at least the top tier ones are better than hku and CU. I would have no problem applying to med school here as I am a US citizen (But i havent taken mcat yet and will not be able to apply until next june)...but I guess for everyone else here from overseas who already have their degrees....they chose hku and cu becoz they wanna practise in hk...so yeah..see you in class~

Congrats on everyone getting their acceptance into either CUHK or HKU :)

HA! Mine was at 1am...when I was barely asleep :p

For those who got into HKU or CUHK (probably not that many of us here), I think we should do a get together in HK before school starts?

So silverdragun are you going to hku or cu?
Just my 2 cents, maybe we should set up a facebook group or sth for those who have applied for mbbs/mb chb this year!

btw, I always thought it would be a good idea to have sth, for it a blog/group on fb or whatever so that potential applicants can contact us for questions...afterall, it's kinda hard to find much insider's info/advice on the internet..at least that what's i felt...and that's why i started off this tread...

I love the blog idea!! Though who's gonna set up the account (I'm not very good with online design)? I would love to contribute about my experiences of applying to cuhk.

The sub sections could be:
Deadlines, Application procedures + tips, interview prep, the actual interview, and then each one of us can give a brief summary of our overall experiences + statistics (obviously we won't include info that are too detailed, but just got interviewed or not + date of notice, got accepted or not + date, gpa, location - the country, age range (20-25, 26-30, etc), and whatever is useful)

I'm definitely up for the idea, but we should get this started before the start of the school year (which i have no idea!!! When do we start anyways?, and when do we get to choose the hostals? eeeep) because we're gonna be busy with school work.

Kewl!!

I recommend xanga for the blog, but if there are better ones feel free to type up :D

OMG...THAT WOULD BE SOOOOOOOOOO COOOOLL~
But first, we would have to gather the required personal information...posting them right here does not seem to be a decent idea...
yEA...the first thing we gotta do is to find someone to be in leadership position, ideally someone who is good at computer and data processing :p
Sooo...who is willing to take the lead ???
DUDE, I dunno when school would start either...As for hostels, I guess we would have a chance to choose after the college selection process~
By the way, has anyone received information about the orientation yet? Orrr...will there be one??? Yea...I am totally lost...wondering what would happen in the a month~

hey everyonee :)
i just received an acceptance from CU recently and came across this forum.

for those planning to go to CU, are you guys all post-grads? and going into first year med?
i'm originally from hong kong but i currently study/studied in england haha.

Welcome to the forum medstudent18 :p
nah...not all are post-grads...for instance, I am a college undergrad :)
You? Just finished your GCE?
See you in the fall~
