any thoughts about the strength of Northwestern's program, specifically if one's goal is cards?

As a graduate of the Northwestern IM residency program, I can tell you that residents of the program have traditionally fared well in securing a position in their desired fellowship. There are some excellent faculty members in the Department of Cardiology.

The chairman, Dr. Robert Bonow, has been there for a long time and is well known nationally and internationally. He is also the President of the American Heart Association. He is one of the most approachable attendings I have ever worked with. He really cares about the residents in the department and has a strong interest in helping them reach their goals. Many of the other faculty members also place an emphasis on mentoring and advising residents interested in pursuing a career in cardiology.

One of the keys to securing a fellowship position at your desired institution is to have a supportive faculty. You need their guidance, support, and when the time comes, strong letters of recommendation.

If you haven't done so already, take a look at where their graduates have done cardiology fellowships over the past few years. I, myself, haven't seen that data and certainly that's an important part of your decision-making process.

Hope that helps,
