Hey guys,
Just wondering about this lab coat order form. How do I go about figuring out my lab coat size. I've heard that I should use my suit jacket size and addd two but i'm not sure about this.
Thanks for your help

I don't know exactly what size you should order because I got a girl's coat. I do know that you should order a little big so that it can fit over your clothes.

Hello Guys and Gals,

My Dad has a retail store where he sells nurse clothes and sells the exact same make and style of labcoats that we have to buy from school. Now I don't know how many does he have. I haven't asked him b/c I am unsure if it is MANDATORY for us to buy the labcoats from the school. I looked at the order form and realized that the scrubs are optional so I will probably get those from my dad's store but I don't know about the labcoats. I think the reason that the labcoats might not be optional is b/c they will probably have our names and the school logo (which is copyrighted) and the vendor who sells the labcoats to the school probably has their permission. So...long story short....are the labcoats MANDATORY to be bought from the school.

I would think so because they are going to be given to us at the white coat ceremony.

Also, about the scrubs, you must make sure that if you buy them from someone other than Nova that they are the same exact color. This is what Su-Ann told me, but i am not sure how to compair colors without actually going to the uniform store that Nova uses. I just bought mine on allheart.com and i am pretty sure they are the right color. If they are a little off i don't think it will be a big deal. Anyways, you might want to call Su-Ann about the white coats.

😀

So about the lab coat sizing...any one know how to figure this out?

Dudes and Dudettes:

Get you white coats from Nova because Nova will embroider the Nova Dental insignia and your names on the White Coats. Scrubs, get it yourselves anywhere (allheart.com). If it's a little different in color, no big deal. Not all scrub brands have the same Dark Forest Green dye!

Know what I'm saying?

Wow, those scrubs are pretty cheap on allheart.com but the shipping is crazy on them. They were cheaper than what my dad sells at his store but than with the added shipping charge they turn out to be more expensive.
Also, my dad said that the Hunter Green color is in different variations in different vendors but it shouldn't be that big of a difference that the school will care. Also, he said some of the good name brands are Landau, Cherokee, Dickies and WhiteSwan...according to him they are the major competitors and have GOOD quality scrubs that will last.

I was just wondering if anyone is up for meeting up for some drinks or something before school starts. We don't have orientation till the 5th, and i move in the second. For the couple of days that i will be sitting around i thought it would be nice to meet up. Anyone?

Hello Everyone,

I was going over the Orientation packet Nova sent us. I am missing the Student kit documents in the packet. They are on the check off list in the front but I couldn't find them anywhere in the book. They are supposed to be right after the labcoats and scrub order forms. Is anybody else missing that info also????
Also Does anybody have an idea how much the students kits cost????? I talked to a student from last year a long time ago and he said they cost about $6000.
Also, does anybody know if the kits are going to be the same as last years?

As long as I know the dental kit + the computer all together will cost about 8K. Those things will be given to us on the orientation day - I think they say this somewhere in the brochure.

I would really like to meet you all guys before school begins. I dont know when I am moving in since I still dont know where I'll be living but I will definitely be there around the 1st of August. I think it is a great idea to do a "get together" night before school starts.

Also:

I spoke with Nova today ? they are about to send out information about the health insurance (it will go out most probably tomorrow or Monday). The cost will be about 1300 for the whole year. I was advised that the health insurance sheet that we are supposed to return to them could be filled with ?IN PROGRESS? and returned like this. Once we get the info in the mail we can sign up with the insurance company and then notify Nova about the coverage. I hope this helps ?

I didn't get a form about the student kit either.

I would love to meet up sometime before classes start...I went out when I visited and I had a great time. Probably the 1st, 2nd or 3rd....

Take care,
Jessica

I'll be moving down in a couple of weeks. My lease at Haciend Cove begins July 7th. I'm sure there will be plenty to do for the month before school starts 🙂 but I am open to meeting with anyone in the area anytime.

munbue...

Where is Haciend Cove?

Its about 5miles east of campus. The address is: State road 84, Davie FL. It's a little more expensive but their one of the only nice places that allows me to have my big dog.

^^^

Cool, i too will be bring a dog to school, i have a mini schnauzer. What kind of dog do you have? I have been wondering what i will do when the dog needs to go out in the middle of the day. I figured since i am living so close to campus i could just go home for lunch and let him out, but that will become a pain in the butt. What are your plans?

I will have two roommates, although one of them will be attending the DO program so his time will be limited as well; I'm hoping that between the three of us we can make some kind of schedule. I am concerned about that as well.....just have to wait and see how much time there will be.....I may also check into "Doggy Daycare" if time becomes an issue (two or three days a week at most).

Hey All you Nova SDN people,

I know it's way in advance, but those that are free, able and willing should mark their calendars for getting together either August 2nd or 3rd in Fort Lauderdale and have dinner and go out afterwards. It'll be loads of fun to meet you all.

I don't know any of the restaurants except the one that I ate in when I interviewed (named Lulu's because my dog is named Lulu, she's a Shih Tzu and, sadly, not coming with me to dental school). So someone else name the place and any date preferences and we'll get together then.

Jessica

I would like to suggest Caraba's. For those who have not been there, its is an italian resturant that isn't too terribly expensive. Its kinda like an Olive Garden but much better. Your looking at 15-20 a person. It is also pretty close to school, just on the other side of 595 and University, maybe about a 10 minute drive on your left hand side. How does this sound?

I move in the 2nd, so that night or the following nights will be fine.

Mango's on Las Olas is cool...I know they have live music a few nights of the week...Food is great, location too...and it isn't too pricey...Then you can go from there to the bars there or on Riverfront....

Will you part of the class of 2008 Ron?

I'll be in Fort Lauderdale with my girlfriend from July 1st-4th. I'll try to check-out some of these places for us to eat and hang-out. If anyone else is there that weekend I would love to meet up.

I have a dog too (border collie named Tiger) and he isn't coming with me either. I'm jealous of you guys that are bringing their dogs along for the journey.

That would be great if you could scout some places out kidcanada. I'm not sure if people would rather eat near school or eat near somehwere we could go out for drinks. That is why i suggested Caraba's, because its near school. I won't be in Ft. Lauderdale when you will, but have fun.

Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, let's all go out for eats and drinks!! I don't know much about what's fun in Fort Lauderdale, but i'm up for anything!

Lauren

When I was there, I was at some lovely strip of bars and restaurants in downtown that was on the beachfront. I think it would be fun to go there--although I have no idea where it is, but Carraba's has great food too! I think we should do it on August 3rd to increase the number of people we can get. (and so JRogoff doesn't have to stress himself out about going out the same night that he's trying to move in).

Jessica

Thanks Jessica, that is very considerate. Although i love Caraba's, it is most likely better if we eat somewhere near places to go out. It would be a big pain for everyone to have to park twice and all that. Plus we might loose people from one place to another. So i think we should find a good resturant near some good bars, any ideas?

I'm actually already here at NSU-CDM, I've been reading y'alls post and I thought I'd make a suggestion. I'm in the class of 2005, so if you have any questions, let me know...

If you're looking for a fun bar, Howl at the Moon is a dueling piano bar...had a blast there the other weekend...there's clubs and other stuff, but when you get a few drinks in you, Howl at the Moon is pretty fun...

Thanks for the suggestions Ron. I have been to Howl at the moon, pretty fun place.

I am flying down to Ft. Lauderdale this Sunday. If anyone wants to meet please let me know. I?ll stay there ?till Wednesday ?

I would love to meet any of my future classmates...I live in Miami, so it'd be fairly easy for me to meet any day for you all who are coming in from out-of-town.

I was just wondering if anyone else got the email from Nancy regarding left-handed students. I replied to her, since I am lefty, and I guess she didn't receive my reply so she called me this morning at home, seems important- it has to do with setting up rotation groups in sim-lab.

Hopefully someone who is already a student at NSU-CDM reads this...I was wondering if you could shed some light into our first summer, from D1 to D2. I know we will be taking Boards part 1, but other than that is there anything else you can share about that summer, or any other summer? Thanks a bunch...Bianca

there has been talk that for your class there would be classes b/w 1st and 2nd year, however, I'm not certain on what has been decided. I think they like the D1s taking the boards, but right now, if you do it, you have to take a Pathology class during that month leading up to the boards.

If things go they way they have in years past, and you don't take the boards, your summer is free to do what you want. you could do work study, or do what I did and enjoy the last summer you would have.

Summers after that first one you are in clinic seeing patients...much more fun than classwork...

hope that helps

Technically we have the whole summer off...Most of my classmates opted to take part 1 this summer. Since we don't have pathology until next year the school is giving us a Pathology prep class for 3 weeks followed by an anatomy review for 1 week.

As far as what else we are doing this summer...I know one guy is doing research at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, Maryland (he isn't taking part 1 this summer). Some went and did the army/navy scholarship summer thing (i'm not quite sure what they do exactly). I think 2 or 3 are doing a summer work study program (doing dental assisting) here in south florida. One girl is getting married...but basically aside from the prep course we have the summer off...Most of us took a long needed break right after our last final...a few people went home for a week or two...(I went to Disney World- and yes it really is the happiest place on earth =).

About the left hand thing...we only have one Dent Sim machine for lefthanders so they have to make sure they don't schedule two left handers at the same time. Usually your schedule is based on the quad you are assigned to...which is basically alphabetically.

hope any of this helps...

Man, I wish I could meet up with you guys but I am still in the process of figuring out where I am going to stay....hopefully I will find out soon. I am planning that once I get a place then I can plan to move sometime late July. I guess there will be plenty of opportunity to meet you future classmates.

I am left handed also and I replied to Nancy....I was told about that in orientation that there is only one sim module for left-handed people. Apparently I also heard that they have scholarships for left-handed folks...I didn't look into that in detail.

Also, Does Anybody have any opinions on Davie Crossings.....I might be staying there.

Chinpatel...

You might want to pm Yah-E (Andy), i am sure he could tell you about Davie Crossings. I just realized you are from NC, my family is from Asheville, you get up there at all?

I have a close friend from Asheville applying to Med schools, but I have never actually been there. Most of my family is in Charlotte, NC. Thanks for the response.....I hope Yah-E sees this and responds.

I have finally found a place to live in fort lauderdale. It's called Sunforest apartment(2bed/2bath) and it is very close to Nova. If anyone is interested please PM me. Rent is about 530.

Listen, Davie Crossing apartments is fine, but it's a ways away, just like Palm Trace. Y'all going to have to drive. It's Poinciana Lakes or Sun Forest or Cedar Key, these are the closest. Anywhere else, it's driving! Driving is fine, but if you get to the HPD parking garage around 10 to 8 AM or at 8 AM sharp, expect a huge line of cars getting into the garage.

Speed bumps are a b1tch at Nova HPD. It fcuks up your alignment to your car! There are only 500,000 speed bumps in the garage. You'll see. Nova loves speed bumps, don't know why....

Hey guys...

Down on the clinic floor some of the Doctors are saying that 90% or so of the graduating class passed the Florida boards...I think that may be our all time high...anyway, even though it may seem like the clinic courses are tough, I guess they know what they are doing....(keep telling myself that)

I have been hearing rumors that Nova's pass rate was higher than UF's this year? Can anyone comfirm this?

You mean "rumors"

For the post-Bacc program, or for the dental class?

Edit: Where did your post go?

I gotta agree with you there.

Back to the registration thing 🙂 I didn't think we could be awarded any financial aid until we registered for classes? Does anyone know more about this? If we don't register until orientation than we probably wont get any awards until after school has started (or so I assume, not that I know much about any of this 🙂). My buddy in the who is starting the DO program this fall said they recieved an email with the classes they should register for; soon after he did, webstar showed his award money.......... No rush on this, just wondering if anybody had heard anything.

Wow, I guess I should start proof reading before I post....

About financial aid award- I received an email from Nova, on my Nova email, that stated "financial aid award notice" and then it directed me to Webstar in order to access the amount and other details. Webstar gave me the entire cost of attendance breakdown, the exact amount I got broken down b/w Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized...I also received mail from Sallie Mae that informed me I had to fill out their official application for the loans, after Nova had notified them of my intent to borrow. I went online and filled out the relatively easy application Sallie Mae asked me to, and then printed out my official loan packet. If you haven't received financial aid yet maybe it's b/c Nova is waiting on some documents or other requirements you may have to fulfill. On Webstar there is a link that shows any outstanding requirements you may have. Maybe other students were notified about financial aid differently...

As far as registration goes, I think that happens during orientation.

Hope this helped

You ought to call the school about your aid...I called them like 3 times to verify that everything was ok with disbursement.

About registering-I don't know if they are changing things this year but last year we didn't register until orientation week (for the second semester we registered online). So far, my class hasn't registered for the fall but when we do we will be registering online.

anybody still looking for a roommate????
