Anyone know what is going on? According to the acpe website, they're scheduled for an interim this spring.
Wow. I decided to skim thru some of the accreditation histories of other schools and i noticed that the number of schools going on probation have been recently increasing. It seems like ACPE is becoming much more strict.
I also think it's interesting how all the schools that are currently on probation happen to be in the southern regions of the US.
Probation does not mean they will losethier accrediation. It is temporary. As soon as they work it out, they will change "probation" to "Full Satisfaction".
I went to Nova for an interview and the school seems kind of messy and chaotic. The admissions office personnel didn't even take the applicants seriously, everyone was just sitting awkwardly to the side waiting forever for the secretary to come out. Even if I get accepted, I'm not going there because the staff, environment, and everything in general turned me off.
i'm a future nova grad, scheduled to graduate this may, and honestly after going thru the program... STAY AWAY!! it has been going downhill from the first day i had class back in 2005. THE DEAN IS TERRIBLE AND NEEDS TO BE FIRED. we have had accreditation problems constantly with him. right now the main problem is that we r 10 faculty members short (maybe even more like 17). we have lost ALL our best professors to other universities b/c nova doesn't pay well. the administration doesn't care about any of us and nova is all about taking money. if i could redo pharmacy school i would NOT BE AT NOVA.
my personal experience of 4 years at nova.. these problems won't be fixed.
the faculty problem i just mentioned is a major issue. we have lost 5 professors last semester and at least 10 since i've been there. i believe we r anywhere from 15-17 short to have the correct student:faculty ratio. we have added MAYBE 1 faculty member and they r incompetent.
accreditation status right now only affects the c/o 11 and later. my class and the year after me is grandfathered in.
if they do not get accreditation status back by the time they graduate, members of those graduating classes will have to take i believe a 72 hour course at another accredited college of pharmacy to prove they have met the standards to get a pharm.d and be a registered pharm.
once i finish graduating from nova, i want no affilliation with them whatsoever...
There are also other "possible" reasons why NSU faculty left...
- Subprime crisis has led to faculty members taking positions such as retail, pharmaceutical companies, or hospital to help pay off their mortgages.
- Some of the faculty/staff members were offered positions at Walgreens training pharmacist on MTM with very high salaries. For example, the Chief MTM trainer in south florida district was a former NSU professor.
- Pharmacy schools are opening like crazy in the south east region for ex. LECOM, and PBA. Also pharmacy schools in Florida have been increasing the number of students such as UF which require more faculty.
- KOS pharmaceuticals (a local pharmaceutical company in south florida) was bought out by Abbott in early 2007. A few of our professors worked for that company and were forced to take new jobs that require full time attention or were forced to relocated.
I would not blame entirely NSU's administration. These factors are not in the control of NSU's administration. However, something must be done to solve this problem.

How do you know?? I have to say that I would take the opinion of somebody who has actually attended the school (bonus for the fact their almost done) over somebody who has only visited and interviewed. No offense intended. I think they have a better idea. Now if some pharmacy students who are currently attending Nova comment that it's a great school then you have a case against them.
I'm going off from what P1's to P4's told me bc I know a few. You have to remember that there is at least one person who hates every single pharmacy school that exist lol. I know quite a few who hate UF believe it or not bc the program is so demanding.
I can't say the program is not extremelly demanding.I would agree that many excellent faculty member have left, and that they seem to have acquired lower quality faculty. The acreditation failed in those two areas, faculty quality and quantity.I hope they can fix the problem.
Nova is a great school & just bc one person doesn't like it doesn't mean many others won't. If you decide not to go with Nova based on what ONE person says then u definitely shouldn't go there and you are very gullible. The probability of Nova losing its accreditation is very very low. From what i heard Nova does have some problems with staff and teachers but it's a good school. As for Tracy Templin that woman needs to be FIRED for sure.
Did it ever dawn on you that the administrative problems may be impacting the admissions office. I am a P-3 student and Tracy was great with us, she had more support in those days now she has many more responsiblilites then she had before. She deals with 1500 students a year maybe you should stop whinning.
Assistant dean Deziel-evans is a Mercer Grad and a leader in pharmacy education.lol is gus the p3 in georgia's district?
now, don't get me wrong, i honestly believe that nova will NOT lose its accreditation. with that said, we r i believe at least 10 profs short, some say as high as 17. we have to get those positions filled by may is what i'm hearing. at bare minimum, to get 10 profs by may is a very HUGE task. it's not hard to get 10 profs, it's hard to get 10 QUALITY profs.
now despite that, NO MATTER WHERE U GO, U WILL GET A GOOD ENOUGH EDUCATION. it really depends on how much u put into it. everyone keeps saying UF is a better school than nova (in my experience), but after having rotations with people from UF, we all know the same amount.
the main problem is that the admins really don't care much about the students (not all of them). i am hearing assistant dean deziel-evans is set to replace malave, which if it's tru, will be AMAZING. i have had experiences with deziel-evans and she cares and listens.
as far as nova's rep and getting a good job/residency. it's not an issue. i have received interviews everywhere i have applied to residency to and i have NO extracurriculars besides working at walgreens.
for me personally, i would not go to a school with so much up in the air. if they make some moves quickly then i would reconsider. but would u rather go to a school on probation status or one that isn't?
my opinion is only one and i agree that u should get as many as u can. but from my personal experience, there r a lot of issues that would have turned me away from nova if i knew about them.
sidenote:
(cacace is another prof we lost by the way too, hearing about yuan reminded me of her)

the only reason i would go to FAMU is only due to the tuition. I guess i will pay it off my first year when i graduate, at least i wont have to worry about accredation in 2010.
A previous quote from Pharmpills:
Talk **** and see what happens to ur school! Talk about Karma. But in the end I still hope Nova does well despite the fact that Pharmpills is always bashing FAMU.
Why do you want to criticize him this way? Have you not done that before in your life?

in the end, we are all pharm.d.
Go ahead and quit going to nova. Who cares about you either? People will be happy if you do not go there, they will have a chance to get in pharmacy school.
There are ony 2 things that i might change the school: Accrediation, and tuition. Otherwise, there is no need to worry about how the school is. it is you who can change your life. No good professor can ever make you better unless you want to be better. That is my 2 cents.
amen x 2.amen🙂!
