Every year has a proposed academic calendar. The Class of 2011 has a proposed summer vacation starting May 24, 2008 and starts up July 2, 2008, so a month and a week. If you join the Class of 2011 Facebook group, you would get information about housing, financial aid, health insurance, and the academic calendar. Look at my links, for the link to the group. Hope this helps!

The advantage of getting only one month off the first year (and starting second year earlier), is that we get more time off to study for boards than many schools.

Our systems courses (we have other random things to do for a week or two) are over the second week of April this year, and we start rotations the first Monday in July.

It is a tradeoff, but one that I would definately prefer. 🙂

So, how many of you guys have filed your fafsa application already?

I whole-heartedly agree. The boards can make or break you.

Filed.

orientation is 1 week b4 school starts..and medstart is the week b4...so im assuming 7/30 is orientation..7/23 is medstart..medstart is totally optional as i did not participate in the activities last year

Medstart was new with the class of 2010, and participation was elective since it was a new program. I believe it is going to be mandatory starting with the class of 2011 (or that was the initial plan).

Please verify with any paperwork you have received from the school or with Rachel, but to be on the safe side--be prepared to go to Medstart. I will try to ask tomorrow when I am giving tours to see if Medstart is going to for sure be mandatory or not.

FYI: Here is the pertinant section of the "Proposed 07-08 Academic Calendar"
July 23, 2007 M1 Fall Semester Begins
July 23-August 4, 2007 M1 Student Fall Orientation/Med Start
July 30, 2007 M1 Student Fall Registration Ends
July 31 – August 6,2007 M1 Student Fall Add/Drop Period
August 5, 2007 Opening Exercises/White Coat Ceremony (Family)
August 6, 2007 M1 Classes Begin

You really need to search for AOA Board Resolution 19. This resolution essentially is eliminating the transitional year and it will be going into effect as early as 2008.

This is from an email I received from administration.
" The changes do remove the requirement of a FREE
STANDING/Unattached traditional rotating internship year. However, in
practice since 1989 reforms, more internships have been linked to a
residency, and counted towards residency training. Because of this,
Osteopathic training time for the vast majority of residencies has
been identical to Allopathic for years. "

A lot of it is a change in the wording, but essentially what this is going to do is to eliminated the need to do that Traditional Rotating Internship year. The first year of residency will automatically count (and there are requirements of the breakdown of that year) and therefore in those magic 5 states you don't have to do the rotating internship year anymore.

Much love from the class of 2009.

do you know when i going to go into effect?

Thanks Kai, you're awesome!

It is put into effect this coming year. The Class of 2011 is required to attend MEDSTART and the program this year is a lot more structured as you can tell from the schedule.

PS - The NSU Class of 2011 Facebook Group has this information on it. Join and peruse through information on financial aid, housing, orientation, etc.

i was accepted to NSU, how have your experiences there been so far?

Feel free to search my name to look for my experiences @ NSU. I have had a great experience, but with all things in life--they are what you make them. I choose to look at everything as half full. I came to medical school to learn about medicine, to learn to become a great clinician, and to maybe have some time to enjoy the weather--NSU has completely met ALL of my expectations in these categories.

I have a great class, all of which work very hard together to be cohesive and to keep the people upstairs happy (administration). Note to incoming first years: get to know your classmates well, and choose your class officers carefully. Having good leadership and being cohesive is VERY important...this was one of the best pieces of advice I received before starting medical school.

All in all, I think that NSU is an amazing school, and I am getting an amazing education. This specifically became apparent to me when I was at some training last summer with 60 med students from all over the nation (MD and DO), and the 3 NSU students there kicked ass. We know as much as everyone else, and in MANY many situations--we knew more. At many moments in the week, I was asked--WOW where do you go to school?

Some poeple are petty--and complain about the little things, and you are always going to get this (I simply don't spend a lot of time with these ppl). Although everyone in medical school is legally an adult, there are some who don't always act that way. There are some people who always choose to find things to complain about in life, medical school will be no exception.

Anyhow, if anyone has specific questions--feel free to PM me and I am more than happy to answer (as always).

...and to any first years reading this in the middle of their hell months: please remember to just take a deep breah, step back, keep your heads up, and look at the big picture. Life really is rough for you right now, but it gets better. Every semester is gets more enjoyable and easier. You are almost thru the worst of it, and in the end you are going to be a doctor!!!

So, how many of you guys have filed your fafsa application already?

Done and Done, did it today after I got the call, and I just did my taxes a few weeks ago and just got the return so that was nice, but what isnt nice, having a wife who makes money my EFC is about $18,000, OUCH! Ohh well, hello private loans.

Arrrggh!!! Poopies!!

What happens if you might not be able to make it to the MEDSTART portion? I thought it was optional and made plans...

Why not just call 'em and find out? NSU's admin will probably give you a better answer than any of us.

3 Br/2.5 Bath, one car garage, less than 5 min from the HPD, only one red-light away. Quiet safe neighborhood at Pine Island and Griffin. Perfect for any of you that have a family. Big fenced back yard that opens onto a large park with a play ground, basketball court, and volleyball court. Just across the street from large lake. Our landlord is great and is just right down the street! $1900/month and utilities are reasonable since it's a newer house! PM me and I'll get you more info.

Little advice for just housing in general, don't live north of 595 if you'll be coming down university or pine island. Good luck guys, enjoy yourselves while you have the time.

Ok, so I know you guys have tests every week. But are the tests cumulative? E.g. you have a test at the end of week 1, and then week 2. Would the test at the end of week 2 cover everything from weeks 1-2, or everything after the week 1 test?

no...but depending on the class the final is cummulative...biochem mainly...cant think of any others at this point

There is a test every week, usually on monday...but for different classes. For example, week one is a biochem test and the following week is physio.

Do you guys find that you can't have any fun on weekends because of the exams every monday?

No weekend studying for myself, thanks!! Actually, since class is mandatory, I'll just use that as study time, with the scrubs acting to lend verisimilitude. 👍

Is it just me...or do this mandatory med start thing sound totally ******ed? I mean, I just want to start medical school...I really don't need to be a week earlier in some pre-med society!

I agree that it may be a bit much, but I really don't think it's a big deal. If you're moving in from out of state somewhere, then it's probably best that you move in at LEAST a week prior to classes anyway, so you can get settled in, get a feel for the surrounding area/campus, etc., so you can have a smooth transition into med school. It's only like three hours a day, and there's some fun stuff involved too.

Besides, if for some reason you really couldn't make it, I'm sure you will be able to work something out with the admin. I highly doubt they'd kick you out for not attending medstart 🙄

do we get our ids during orientation or medstart?? is there a way to get into the rec center before we get them?

I really like the idea of Medstart... most schools have an orientation period anyways. You have to get BLS certified, register, sign up for clubs, etc.

You guys see the doc2b post in the osteo forum - "Dont go to NSU"...I find these threads really scary. I know people say med school sucks...and you will always have complaints...but I just don't see this much negative backlash from other schools (particulary MD students in FL).

orientation and medstart are totally different...MEDstart is where you just do mainly social outings, at the pool, wine tasting, D&B..and a couple of lectures on like stress management or some crap. Orientation is stuff you need to take care of b4 school starts, HIPAA cert, FirstAid cert, etc. Pretty much a week of saying congratulations 20 different times.

its only 1 internet post...take it with a grain of salt, he prolly got unlucky with the lotto or something...And yes the worst thing about the school is the administration but it doesnt really affect most ppl.

I do dislike this forced rural internship and the lottery system...I'm not typically a lucky person and the fact that I have to rely on luck to get the most out of my clinical education does make me feel uneasy. I mean you do the best you can, spend some serious $$$ for tuition and when all is said and done, it's the luck of the draw that determine where and when you will rotate. I mean if the this forced rural rotation is hurting student's residency choices...the school should re-evaluate. The truth is that I have no choice....I'm going to NSU for geographic reasons.

As far as the lottery is concerned, is it a matter of when you rotate into certain areas, where you do your rotations, or what facets(specialties) of medicine one can participate in. Is there a chance that one can not be allowed to have a rotation in EM, surgery, etc.? I am fairly certain that I want to go into EM, but with posts like, "Don't go to NSU", I guess it just brings a little fear into the equation. If I go into the NRMP without a rotation in EM, it is going to be harder to catch a match in an EM program, right? Was that guy just pissed off, or is he really getting screwed? 😎

there are unhappy and bitter people at every school. thats life.

I believe that this year, MEDSTART is highly structured. It doesn't seem as relaxed as last year's schedule, unless they didn't include the social outings into the itinerary.

Lottery isn't based solely on luck. Granted that each class makes its own lottery system, but I believe each class has a chance to trade off the clinical sites so that the vast majority of students are happy. As for the rural internships, it comes with the curriculum and since NSU has been doing this for years, it must work to some degree.

You say that you have no choice so I guess it's a null point. 😕

You are required to do an EM rotation. No one can graduate without doing one. It is "scheduled" for the fourth year, but I know of some students who have squeezed it into their third year.

Instead of a lottery, why not base the rotation selection on class rank?

I'd rather have somewhat of a life outside of studying and not try to undermine my classmates to get ahead during the first two years.
Agreed. I'd rather have a cooperative class than a competitive one. Never knew Hasselhoff was so cut throat!
