NSU acceptance class of 2011!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks Mickey for the detailed email!! I really hope they do away with the TRI by the time my class graduates in 2011!

BTW, random question... does anyone know the dates yet for when classes are starting next yr??? and what's with the whole week or orientation thing i was hearing at my interview?? something about week of welcome.... M2's and M1's interacting etc etc...? i heard this the c/o 2010 were the first ones to go thru this...
M1s have Orientation the first week of August historically, so that is my best guess. They have been changing orientation over the last few years, and is slowly getting better (I hope).

Dress code: see what Mikey said.
My only addition to the dress code comment is that they have not historically enforced it except on test days of M2 year.

kaikai or mickey... are either of you doing the DO/MPH program?? i'm REALLY interested in that... n had a few questions...

I am not, sorry...but I'd be willing to try to answer questions if you have them.

Since you're offering 🙂...what is the exam schedule like? I think it's every Monday, but I've gotten schools confused with each other! Also, do you know offhand what the passrate for the COMLEX/USMLE Step I and II is? Thanks!

I really don't know for sure what the pass rate was. It was somewhere in the mid 90s i think...but don't quote me on that.

Historically, we have had tests every Mon. We have complained about having every weekend ruined (which is good and bad--lots of time to study, but you get burned out after awhile somtimes), so they are working on moving some of the tests to Thursday (with Wed off to study). They want to keep us happy. 😀

Thanks a bunch kaikai128. Do you know where I get get information about the COMLEX and USMLE pass rate. I know that it is pretty high.

Once a week isn't bad at all. It's not too frequent where you think you're studying for a test every other day and not too infrequent where you slack off too much. I'm liking the sound of this 🙂

I like our schedule very much..its very rare...maybe once a week max where we stay till 5..normallly get out by 230-3...and every other friday is half day!! this is 11 weeks into 1st year...

Sounds fantastic.

My NSU fate was decided today:scared:
I was thinking that today DrKuba. 🙂 Crossing my fingers for you. By the way, you may not hear until Monday because of the conference that they are having this week. That's what I was told by another applicant.

grrr. If I don't get a call, do you think I can call them?

they usually call on Fridays..or Mondays....so be a lil bit more patient ..and best of luck.

So, I was trying to figure out why books and supplies for the NSU budget was a whopping $11k vs. other schools who estimate about $3-4K for that.

I called up the office and they said the larger value is to ensure that you can pay for all the books and supplies. Can someone account for the discrepency? That's a big differential! I'm figuring it factors in a laptop computer, but that should only run you about 3K and usually that's factored into the tuition?

That's one of the factors that makes NSU's cost of attendance a bit higher than other schools with comparable tuitions. Thanks in advance! 😀

lol..noone spends nowhere near that..from what ive heard..NSU allows for a bigger budget for "supplies" to help out the students that have to support a whole family "wife, kids, etc"...ie the non-trads..Books can get expensive..but if u shop online..u can save ALOT...theres more then enough money to buy a laptop for yourself..or twoo..🙂

Thanks for the answer!

That's great that NSU does this, but if you have money left over, can you use it towards next semester (assuming that there are two installments per year, one per semester) so you don't have take out as much loans or is that already predetermined at the beginning of the school year? In any case, it's extra spending money.

Two comptuers, sweet! One for me and one for my clone! 😀

Great question HOD, id been wondering the same thing. The price of living in FL is still getting to me a bit. I dont want to be down 200k after 4 years... heres hoping for research fellowship (oh, and the acceptance first:laugh: )

You think the COL in Florida is vastly different from New England? Maybe it's more expensive than CT, but not MA. The cost of housing in Davie and Plantation is much lower than in MA. The COL is about the same.

NSU provides students an allowance of $12000 for Room and Board per year. If you plan to live alone, you will probably use all that money. If you get a two a three bedroom place, the prices drop pleasantly. I could see myself in a $500-600/month condo rent and still have a decent amount for amenities and food.

Too early to look for roommates though. I've heard that people suggest that first years come down in April to scope out and put themselves on waiting lists. The closer you live to school, the more expensive housing is.

CT is more expensive than MA (about same cost + higher taxes.) But some of the other states I could end up are cheaper (ME.) I havent done any concrete research yet. but 500-600/month is not very expensive and I would definitely want roomate(s). When I get acceptances this will be one hard decision.

Im from TX where the COL is dirt poor..and i dont think the COL is that bad here..Just get at least a roommate.u'll be saving hundreds a month.. And yes..You can use ur money left over for next semester..OR u can just give it back..the smartest thing is to invest it ...And yes they give the money to you in 2 payments..1 at beginning of school..other after xmas

Investing in a condo would be smart..as the location around NSU is good..and you will be making some sort of profit in the end..

Yeah, ME is cheaper. It's Maine though 🙂 I have been impressed by the research I've done. Trying to get a place like that in Boston will probably run you $1000 per person/month...yikes!

If my friend gets into Nova, we'll be scoping out places around the school in the spring.

Yes, it is a hard decision. One that you'll hopefully enjoy making.

Most schools do not recommend investing on a house, but I guess a condo is much more manageable. Good idea. I know I'll probably live frugally and "play" at the end of every semester. This plan will probably be down the drain.

HOD, you are officially going to be my financial consultant. I am no good with those things, I just do science.
lol! That's hilarious. If we go to the same school we could be roommates. See you at UNECOM if not sooner on AIM.

Hey everyone -

I've done some research on this, but the more I do, the more I seem to get confused. When does a post grad need to do a transitional year (PGY-1) or so? Is it only for certain specialties that you want to get into? Searching through SDN gave a lot of information about PGY opportunities, but not necessarily the reason for them and the specialities. If anyone knows where I can be directed or could shed any light on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am asking this here because of Florida's added traditional rotation. Is that the same as transitional? On the match list, they separate them. Thanks!

Edit: Okay got some okay information on it, but would still like some more input or another interpretation. Thanks 🙂

A specific definition from a physician friend of mine at DFC:
Transitional = rotations in various specialties, typically for an internship year, before moving on to a several-year program in your residency of choice.
So, most residencies require an internshp year, and
if this is listed as their match ("transitional") then it usually means the person only matched for internship.

That's the impression I got. Thanks Orthodoc40!

But now, what is traditional rotating? I'm guessing it's the added extra year in one of the five states.

Basically the same thing. It is an extra year, just in the sense that you're sort of having to do an internship year twice. It might be that transitional is more likely to be linked into a residency. She didn't seem to know the answer more specifically than that

If you choose your traditional or transitional year wisely, it may count as your first year of residency.

Hi guys,

I've been accepted to NSU & I would really love to go there. But I have a question: they mentioned in the interview that a majority of 3rd & 4th yr rotations are done at one of 14 sites in FL. I don't plan on staying in FL after graduation, so is it going to be a pain to start my internship/residency at a place other than those 14 sites? I've seen the match list & all, so are there electives that you can do at places where you'd like to do your post-grad training? Hope this made sense 😳 Thanks 🙂

The match list shows where students have done their fourth year clerkships. The majority of the 3rd year rotations are done in Florida through the lottery. 4th year is open to you less the rural med, fam med and int. med rotations I believe. You can go wherever you want and can do three weeks in a row of a specific specialty.

I think Emergency med is in there too as a required for 4th year

Most likely. I know there is ambulatory care, but I think it's part of rural med or EM. Either way, there's a good chunk of time for your own electives.

I dont plan on staying in FL either...just go out of state during 4th year rotations...not a prob...

The only rotations that are in 4th year are Rural Med and Emergency Med. Everything else (Family, Internal, Surgery, Psych, Peds, etc) is in 3rd year.

Boy do I feel special. I now get to officially post in an official acceptance thread! Just found out I got into Nova, and LECOM, but I'd rather go to Nova. So it looks like for now, I'll be going to Nova, unless I like NYCOM or UNECOM or PCOM decides to give me an interview. But I'm thrilled either way. It's such a great feeling, and the school is gorgeous.

<---- Recent acceptee as well!

I loved my visit to NSUCOM and really looking forward to starting medical school in 2007!

Congrats you two!

I've gotta stop reading these posts or I will have to add my application to Nova soon!! Congrats everyone! :luck:

Does anyone know if the rural rotations in 4th year can be done at any point, or there is a required order of completing 4th year core rotations before getting to electives? Thanks.

From what i understood at the interview...there's no required order for the core rotations...everyone's pretty much on a different cycle...n how u get to choose when u wanna do what...that i dont know... maybe its the lottery system or they just assign it to u?

Does anyone know how long it takes to get the acceptance letter via snailmail? Also, when is the deposit due?

Thanks and congrats all!

I got my package about 1 week later, and $750 is due by Dec 14th, then $1250 is due by Mar 15th.

Totally random question that I probably shouldn't be too concerned with yet....

When you are setting up 3rd year rotations through the lottery you have the possibility of landing in places like Orlando or Tampa. Ok, so far so good. But given that the rotations are not that long, how do you handle housing? Do 3rd years typically craiglist an apt for a month? Is there hospital housing? Do you live out of your car?

Thanks!

I just had a question about the acceptance packets. There's a bunch of stuff in there, and I"m trying to sort it out. That accept or decline sheet, do we send it in with the deposit if we accept? Or can we send it ahead of the deposit and hten send the deposit closer to the deadline? Also, those bootleg postcard things, the ones that say first depost $750 and then there is one for the second deposit, I would assume that gets mailed along with our deposits? Thanks for the help, because I'm a little confused with the papers.

I intend on sending them all together if I decide on NSU.

from what I gathered at my interview date, they provide housing for you during rotations that take you out of the city.
