I've been to Maryville (close to Knoxville, right?) and there didn't seem like such great malls around......actually, not much of anything. I'm from NY too, and i'm perfectly happy w/the shopping situation down here. And it is all so close to school!!!

MUAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH! I don't think I said it but I'm from Maryville. (Pronounced Mar-vil for those that are from here) We have a mall....its just kinda small....and the movie theater is across the street...and that theater doesn't take credit cards.....and ....well you get the picture. It does have an electronic Boutique and a good bookstore so all is ok in my book. Thanks for the help you rock!

As you can see, I'm doing a wonderful job studying for bacteriology tonight.......My bro-in-law lives in Maryville, and I was up there almost 2 years ago. He has a beautiful house with a view of the mountains....very pretty up there. I'm a big city girl, though.

Yeah we have great malls around here, I think someone mentioned Fashion, Broward, and Sawgrass. The Pembroke Lakes mall is close by as well and a little farther there is Aventura Mall in Miami (has some pricey deparment stores like Bloomingdales and boutiques). As for gaming stores all have EB and Babbages, plus we have Game Stops. In the strip mall right by school that has the Old Navy there is a Game stop as well. (My boyfriend is into video games so I get to know these places pretty well 🙂 )

Finding shopping malls will not be a problem in South Florida

lol..not only do I know about them I play some too! I play Halo sometimes but I like playing it when we have a couple X- Boxes connected for multiplayer games. I am best at fighting games though like Soul Caliber and Tekken. ..I know I am a dork 😛

Now that I found my shopping I was wondering how the beaches are. When I drove down to NSUCOM from Orlando for my interview I spent very little time there. I basically drove down, got into my hotel, worked out and went to bed. I did though take about 30 minutes to drive cause I wanted to see a beach. I started driving south and east and driving right by the airport. I ended up in the docks districts. OOPS! Anyway, I found a Beach (started with a D. I believe) and since it was like oh...9pm in December it was deserted, dark, and cold. 🙂 I got out...grabbed some sand....looked at the coastline with the lights of Miami....said...I saw the beach and got right back in my truck.

So, I'm going down in May and I was wondering what some of the best beaches were. I assume pretty good ones since there is some serious advertising for Ft. Lauderdale beach and of course South Beach but I was still curious of a local observations on this. I'm thinking of having a drink by the beach. Yes....that would be so nice.

You probably were at Dania Beach! I think your best bet in Fort Lauderdale would be... Las Olas. I live near Deerfield Beach (about 15 minutes North of Fort Lauderdale) and I like the beach in Deerfield (by the pier). I also like Delray Beach (further North). But I think South Beach is my favorite, but I dont always feel like driving down there.

Hi, I am Bryan Currie and will be a M-3 in July. I am leaving to do my rotations in West Palm and my roommates need someone to take my place. We live in a house about a 12 min drive from NSU-COM down University and heading East on Broward Blvd. I got this house last year from previous M-IIs who were leaving for rotations and it was an upperclassman secret before that. The house is huge with a large living room, a den with bar (great place to catch college football, and yes you will have time to do just that) and not to mention a recently resurfaced pool in the back with a huge yard. The rent is $516 per month plus approx $100 per month for the Wireless internet, water, electricity,lawn,pool stuff. This is THE PLACE so act fast! You can move in the first of July.

question for current students or anyone that knows. I hear that a lot of Fridays are clinical days. Does this mean you follow physicians in the area in their own clinics? Like shadowing? Or do you work in the health clinic that is adjacent to the school? (which I have never seen) I was just curious about the first year patient contact during didatic training.

I think you are talking about "IGC". You pick between internal medicine, family medicine, or peds and then you are assigned to shadow a physician in that field at their office about six times during the semester. The office is somewhere in the area - I am pretty sure no one is assigned to the clinic (although you can shadow there on your own time). This semester, we went every other Friday (about 6 times this semester and about the same last semester), but I am pretty sure that they are changing the day so that it doesnt cut your weekend short. How much you get to do depends on you and the physician you shadow. Some physicians prefer you to just watch and some will let you do a lot but you generally have to take the initative. In addition to what AUdacious said, there are a few people who were assigned to the clinic at school, mostly for reasons of transportation difficulties. The person who runs IGC is willing to work with students in their placements. And if you don't get your first choice during your first year, she will help you out during your second year.

AUdacious and I were assigned to the same doctor, and we loved working with each other, so we requested to be together again next year. We also had a great physician who spent plenty of time with us and allowed us to ask lots of question.

MUHAHHA. Yeah I meant ICG. Could you expand on what was expected of you? Which type of medicine did you observe..FP,IM, or peds? Did you guys just shadow or was the physician cool and let you do things?

IGC is a honors, pass, fail course - 100% attendance, a patient log, and a case report on a patient you saw are expected. DoctorInSpace and I were assigned to family practice with a D.O. about 15 minutes away. He was awesome; after every patient, we would go and ask questions and discuss the condition in his office. We got to see a lot and even saw a blocked Wharton's Duct which was on a quiz we had the following week in a different class. We also got to see a lot of OPP at his office. We only did basic things like wt, ht, temp, bp, pulse, respirations, and patient histories. We were allowed to do more, but he said it was up to us about how comfortable we felt doing things. He asked us if we wanted to do some OPP once but we didnt learn the technique until two weeks later. We listened to a lot of hearts and looked into a lot of noses and ears. Like I said, it is what you make of it. Yes, we couldve done a lot more but we really got so much out of just seeing a patient with him and then talking about it afterwards that I was pretty happy doing that. By the end of your first year, you know how to do a complete history and physical so you could do that if the physician says its okay.

I forgot to mention that one of my friends was a respiratory therapist before coming to medical school. The physician she shadows gets her to see a patient on her own and then she presents the patient to the physician. Then, the physician talks to the patient and goes over everything. Afterwards, the physician tells her what she missed and how to do things better etc. and then she does a complete writeup on the patient. She has really learned a lot from this. She also gives shots and helps explain how/when to take medications and how they work and all kinds of cool things like that. I can't imagine what the students who are nurses or who are really comfortable with their OMM get to do. Again, it is what you make of it. See you soon.

I was wondering about that. I am a paramedic and am quite familiar with talking to patients while not being nervous. The physicians I shadowed were really cool with me asking questions or them getting me to do things with a patients premission. I felt pretty special just shadowing...go fig!

I was a little interested in seeing if they were pretty cool preceptors or not. You make it sound like a lot of fun getting to play with what you learn early in school. Yay!

I don't know much but they may be able to give you a ball park figure if you call them. Their number is (954) 262-1262. They have a website but its not the most helpful in terms of information. http://www.nova.edu/smc/

I'm pretty sure my packet said that everything in the admission folders they sent ya is due on the 15h. Thats why I had to bust my butt to go get this crap done.

Yeah my visit ended up costing me around 240 and THEN i needed a titer for my heb B which I had the shots but didn't hvae documentation available.

Yes I am immune and it cost me a whopping 75 bucks for that freaking test....which happened to be about 35 more than they quoted me for it.

I can bitch or I can pay it and never do that crap again.

Free is good...or you can challenge it with a titer as well like I did. I was forced to have a lot of this crap done when I was in paramedic school before I got to do my hospital rotations. So I have been through this before and learned you get screwed a lot.....hense when I got my positive PPD....oh that pissed me off. Chest x-rays for life for me! Yay!

Anyway, I was lucky to have pretty good documentaion of all my shots and chicken pox (varicella). This last physicial finally though has everything on one page. Now I can transfer my records to another location without having to drag everything out. I am trying to figure out why we needed two copies for our hospital rotations, you'd think the school would forward them on with our HIPPA approval.

As for varicella....I had it like when I was two and a half...my doc took my mom's documentation coupled with another physician writing that I had it as a child for my proof. No titer no nothing. Signed me off as having it when I was a child. Maybe I just got lucky in that he wasn't super demaning that the old physician records had to have the exact date of my illness on them...


then again I could have shown him my chicken pox scars 🙂

For biochemistry for example, I have never once looked in the required text book. Everything you need to know is give as handouts in lecture or is stated during the lecture. All required books are on reserve at the library, too. I think they budget books/supplies as over $6000.....that is way more than you will ever need. All of your diagnostic equipment (otoscope, ophthalmoscope, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, etc) will cost you less than $1000, and you will not buy $5000 worth of books. There are several books that are good for reference, and there are some that you need to have (at least in my opinion). DO NOT go out and buy all of the books on the list. You will be wasting your money.

I just wanted to get that out there b/c I would hate for you to go out and buy a bunch of books that you will reference very infrequently, when they are at the library if necessary. When we get a little closer to August, you will hear a lot more from us as to which books are truly necessary.

Thanks Jill. I was actually going to hold off on buying ANY books until school get closer. Hell, I'd pay for the fedex or UPS shipping if I needed them that bad.

I was and maybe still am going to go through on a search function to figure out what books are cool and what sucks. I know I want a netters for sure but do I want to buy one or sign up for AMSA and get on for free? Little things like that.

I'm poor...I'm a student..and 6K on books is INSANE. I already have a stethoscope and a BP cuff, so those are a few less things I need to worry about.

I'm hoping to get the INSIDE STUFF(TM) on the need to have and the nice to have.

It is nice if your on a military scholarship (which I am not) and get to buy EVERYTHING!

Yes, I am on military scholarship, and get reimbursed for all required stuff. I bought some non-required/non-recommended and didn't get reimbursed, but they were more helpful than the required stuff. Even if you bought every single required book, you still wouldn't spend $6000. Just count that as more money to live off of.

We also got an email from Dr. Chaffin saying they "will be checking for payments received no later than Monday, May 17." So if it's at the school in time (perhaps not in the COM admissions office, but in some mailroom somewhere), they can't give away my seat, right???? 😕

Hmmm. I remember that I sent in my deposit in March oh.....less than a day before it is due. I am sure if you have it postmarked by Friday you should be good. There has to be SOME leway.

I bit the bullet and applied for a credit card...I got one with a credit limit of 1000 and used it all up this last Tuesday for my final payment. To pay by credit is another option for you.

Lastly, I would just overnight it if your really worried or if your SUPER worried I think you can have fedex or UPS actually deliver it directly to the desk with a confirmation of delivery. It may cost you but if its for your piece of mind its all good.

I would call and let them know you sent the payment and jsut make sure they know you sent it. I doubt they will give away your seat without notification to you. The mail is unpredictable at best sometimes.

Oh and another thing. I really haven't talked to linda but Margie at 1126 is really really helpful. She answered a lot of my questions about residency waiting periods and general admissions thoughts I had.

I held off on sending my last transcripts in until this week. I didn't want to send in my transcripts and them turn around and want the damn spring semester. So, I waited until they were released on wednesday and I sent them out then. I'll call next week to make sure they were received. I just want everything in by june so my financial aid will get there...so I can pay for my apartment and school....and my video game habit. 🙂

Oh and I found getting in touch with linda OR Margie is a luck of the draw type of thing. You jsut need to call linda 1139 and margie 1126 until you get one. Isn't that sad I know the extentions by heart now?

I know it is such a pain to track everything down; I remember how many times I called. You would think that it wouldn't be so hard to find out which transcript they need. Now that I am here though and see how hard they work, I kinda feel bad about how pissy I got when I wanted info NOW that they couldnt give me. Anyhow, they are working on getting everything computerized so that you can log on and check all this stuff and not have to deal with the phones so much. If you pm me with anything you are having difficulty with and why or have any suggestions for improvement, I will submit it and hopefully make the process easier. They are doing a serious overhaul of the entire process though so at least they are putting forth the effort. I basically kept a list of questions so that I would remember everything when I called and wouldnt have to call a million times to get a few questions answered. Next Friday is our last final, I am counting down the seconds! See you all soon.

Hey Class of 2008... Congrats to all of you!

A few quick things for you...

If anyone is still looking for housing next year, I have a room available in a 3bed/2.5.bath townhouse that is within 5-10min walking distance from Nova's HPD. The house is pretty big... each bedroom has its own balcony and a walk-in closet, you would share a bathroom with me, there is a washer/dryer, and downstairs there is a brand-new kitchen and nice new tile floors, and two living areas... plus a front porch for a table or something. Plus there is a pool and tennis court and a clubhouse, and it is right across the street from Bally's. Rent is $500/month starting as close to June 1st as possible plus utilities. I am 23 and will be an M2 next year, and I live with my brother who is 26 and a financial analyst, and also a friendly cat. About health insurance - I am the president of SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Association) for next year and we offer health insurance for you guys. Once I am done with finals next week and get everyone's addresses, I will be sending some info to you about their insurance. I'm not sure if it is better or worse than the school's insurance (I'm still a baby and on my parent's insurance), but it's pretty much up to you to see which one will be better for you. Plus, if you get the SOMA insurance, the club looks good and we get some money from it... and the better the club is, the more parties we can have for you (esp. Osteoblast, a party on the beach during your orientation week) and the more we can do with the club (like going to Conventions and things like that). So anyway, look for some info in your mailbox coming sometime soon...
