Last time I checked access group wouldn't let you defer while in residency...but sallie may did. just something you might want to consider

someone explain to me what deferring while in residency means...im a noobie 😳

...to "defer" during residency would mean that you would not have to start paying back your student loans until you are out of residency and practicing. There is an income "level" that you have to remain below in order to qualify for deferring.

I left my lender as Sallie Mae because I have had good luck with them in the past. I don't have any knowledge on differences between specific lenders. If you are looking into changing lenders from Sallie Mae, definately look into their policies.

Does the interest rate still accumulate when you defer until after residency>?

How's everyone doing on the housing front? My dad and I are going down at the end of the month to look at a few condos. We are going to decide between a 2 or 3 bedroom, so I will definitely be looking for roommate(s).

hey Ditty, what part of jersey you from? im from jersey too.. prolly gonna look for housing around april 7th or so (When my brothers spring break is) with parents... im from edison

Hey all don't forget to join our facebook group 🙂

and we gotta start planning the get together!

God bless 🙂

back down to ft. lauderdale...home sweet home 🙂 i'm going to go check out the school again and some housing info if any of you want me to. I have nothing better to do, but beach and relax, since it's my spring break! also, was wondering if any of you ordered your white coat and official scrubs yet? if so, did you just fax the order form in? thanks, hope you all have a great weekend!

how on earth did we beat out wvsom.. wow. cost of living doesnt rape that much does it!

Hey Rack, I'm from Lakewood. Where did you go to undergrad?

It appears Dave Matthews Band is playing in West Palm the weekend of August 11th, I'm debating about whether to request tickets or not. I figure if I don't use them, I could always sell them. Anyone else a fan?

Yeah, you will get the whole speech of why that is from our Dean once school starts...aaaaand maybe your class will be lucky and you'll actually get the passing rates for boards...

Whatever...
mmm, i cannot wait that long. i'm curious now. is it to provide a/c to the students? or are DO schools paying ppl to allow DO students to massage them? probably just admin overhead.

BTW, since we are talking about money, anyone know how i can change my residency status from out of state to in state?

i'm pretty sure you can just contact the financial aid office...that's what i did when i had a whole bunch of questions and the guy there was very helpful! but from what i know, you have to have had at least 1 or 2 years residency and provide A LOT of proof...such as copies of diploma, driver's license, homestead exmeption, tax return, etc..and this is all sent with the residency packet you need to fill out and return to the school within 30 days of acceptance...

from the NSU website:

"Eligible students must request in-state tuition on application. For tuition purposes, a student’s Florida residency status (in-state or out-of-state) will be determined based upon initial matriculation and will remain the same throughout the entire enrollment of the student at NSU. Accordingly, tuition will not be adjusted as a result of any change in status after initial enrollment registration."

if you already filled out the residency packet as out of state then i don't know how to handle that, and think the best bet would be to contact the office.

i don't remember a residency packet. just 'sign here that you will attend' form and 'please write a check' letter. oh well. so much for getting a new car.

My friend at KCOM told me he doesn't have time to workout. All he has time for is trying to maintain his fitness level. Is anyone else into lifting? I think I'm going to need a workout partner to stay motivated. 🙁

im into sports..like bball..im sure there will be guys that will be your workout buddy..so i wouldnt worry about it..(our class size is biiggg) ..Who knows maybe i'll get back into it 🙂

i hope ppl in my class are the type of ppl that work out and look hot. no way i'm going with fat ugly ppl to the beach to pick up chicks.

hehe that's hilarious

so when is the get-together going to be???????

Anyone like to run... I do a slow 5 miles each morning and could use the company.

there better be time to work out!!!! Something will have to be done if there isn't. When I was there for my interview I saw a student in scrubs who definately found ample time to work out....and things to shoot in his ass. lol.

I plan to go to the Bally's (across the street) after class for an hour or so at least 3 times a week. Then I plan to study for about 3 hours, preferably in a study group. If I can keep this schedule (and have a couple of friends doing the same) then keeping fit and passing classes with awesome grades would not be a problem.

lol....i've seen a few of those

To all you looking at gyms, first of all you don't really have all that much time to work out, unless that is pretty much your only "me time." Second Bally's will rip you off! There are many other gyms around campus that are cheap, everyone in our class joined bally's last year, and it was a fight to get your money back, I had to threaten to sue them. Some people still are paying and don't even get to go. I think the new UC will be open by the time you all start and it will be awesome. Point of the matter, check everything out before you sign a contract, and if I were you, I'd wait until Sept to join a gym when you see how much time you actually have.

Wow..you guys should read all of this

http://medicine.nova.edu/comorientation/forms/medstart.pdf

it mentions the academic societies and such..and also a pre-orientation program called Medstart..which starts July 17th...and is pretty much a pre-orientation to get to know students before hand...interesting.

yay! just put down my deposit! yeah that is really interesting - it almost sounds like what yale does with its 'colleges' in undergrad, to make the class a bit more personal and seem smaller.... 👍

The most I've been doing lately is 5K. I'd like to get more into running. 👍

Same here, I just have to transfer my membership to that club. I wish they had a steam room like the Bally's I used to go to. PM me with your info.

that is so early i think. when do leases on apartments usually begin in the area? i guess i will find out as soon as i fly down there in May and look.

does sound fun, especially the 'ropes adventure challenge' thing.

They start whenver you sign them. Most of my classmates I believe signed leases in early-mid July last year. I think we signed mid-June. If you are down in May, plan to pay the application/hold almost immediately--as most places are 60 days out, and some of them even have waitlists longer than that.

This year the pre-orientation two weeks of leadership is optional. I believe that next year it is probably going to be mandatory. I think they are really trying to increase the community within the class, and between classes as a way to manage the large amount of students here.

I don't know about being here two more weeks early, but I think that an increased amount of community here would be a good thing. I hope that the incoming class embraces these new "communities" and make them something that are a positive point of our school. I know that they work quite well in some other Universities.

I won't comment on the "ugly" part, but there are very few overweight people in our class of 240. There several triathletes, 1/2 and full marathon runners, etc. You won't have a problem fining people who are good looking enough to go to the beach, time may be another thing. 😉

does that include the ladies..... 🙂

So, for anyone who has tried or thought about ordering your white coat and scrubs for the Fall, turns out Uniforms of America won't be making the scrubs for us. Something about NSU wanting to change colors (royal blue to ciel blue) but the uniform place couldn't fulfill the order in time. They are still making the white coats though. So anyways, I got a call from them and was told I had to order the scrubs in the NSU bookstore. I can't find it on the site, but I just wanted to let everyone else know

bump!

i hate it when our class thread is not first!

so what color are the scrubs now? ciel blue only? whatttttttt?

yea. i would wait till around late july before buying any scrubs....its a possibility they might make all the med students wear one color, the dental another color, and so forth..

Hey guy's I know you all are really excited about next year, you should be, it's great! I have tried to give you all sound advice, and if you haven't listened that's ok, but listen to me here....

When you all come they are going to give you a list of stuff to buy, opthalmoscope, otoscope, tuning forks, etc, etc. They will try to sell you on buying your stuff through the schools WelchAllyn rep....DON'T AND I MEAN DON'T DO IT! They absolutely ripped us off this year, I don't know if someone is getting a kickback or what. Me and a couple of my friends ordered our stuff through www.steeles.com and they were great. Allheart has stuff too, but their customer service sucks. You can actually call steeles some of the other sites are email only.

They (when I say they, I mean the rep the school hooks you up with) are going to try to pressure you to buy a panoptic, you don't need it, people in my class are pissed, they spent an extra x hundreds of dollars and we've used them once, and you don't need them anyway, you can use your opthalmoscope. They're also going to try and get you to buy the WelchAllyn stethescope, don't, for the money you spend you can buy a Littmann and they are 10x better. This year it really came off like used car salesmanship.

So here's what you do:

1) go to a uniform shop and get your stethescope, you can just get a Littmann Ultralite, because you don't know how to use a good one yet anyway.

2) go to www.steeles.com or another non-shady site/store to get your equipment, get the most basic kit you can. DON'T get the new style otoscope head, when you start using it you'll realize that it fogs up all the time and is basically as useful as a paper weight. By ordering it through another place like steeles you are going to save about 400-500 dollars. So it's well worth it. And if you don't have it the first day of class you can always borrow someones until it comes in.

I just wanted to get this out to you all, make sure the word gets circulated, post it on your facebook whatever, I just don't want the same thing to happen to you all that happened to us. Cheers!

Your class I believe is going to have to where ciel blue, just an FYI

thanks for the heads up doc!

Thanks Doc2b. It is good to get advice about $$$ stuff from a student. I will be sure to use the steeles website. Did you the school's recommendation for buying the scrubs?

I would wait on scrubs until you know for sure what color you are going to have to wear. You can get them through the school if you would like...the only thing is the size thing, thye are unisex so take that into consideration. They say they are going to make everyone wear the same color next year, I don't know how strictly they will enforce it though (in the past they haven't been too strict--but they say they are going to start pushing it a bit more).

How 'bout those tigers!!!! Way to make JJ cry!!!! Now who's the big baby?

Yea..now you get to take on TEXAS!!!! its gonna be a good game...

Hookem Longhorns 🙂

I actually thought the prices for most everything sold by the Welch Allyn rep were very competitive. That said, definitely don't buy a PanOptic and get the "old style" otoscope head. This is way more than you need for your first and second years, and in your clinical rotations you will use equipment that is "on the wall." Probably the most popular choice for stethescope is the Littmann Cardiology III, and I really like mine. The price for this on Steele's is something like $140, and I'm pretty sure I bought mine from the campus sale for around $75. Just shop around and find the best price for your basic medical equipment! 👍

M1 Year Bare Essentials (in my opinion):
-stethescope
-Welch Allyn basic otoscope/opthalmoscope (with bulb insufflator)
-BP cuff (any will do, so get the cheapest!)
-Tuning forks/reflex hammer/pocket visual card/measuring tape/etc.
-Scrubs (whatever color they tell you to buy)
-2 white coats
-Textbook of Physical Diagnosis by Schwartz
-Physiology by Constanzo
-any anatomy atlas
-Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple (2nd semester)

Any questions, just ask! 🙂
