NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, your NSU ID is that number. It's also been attached to most of your emails that they've sent you (a couple times following "NSU ID:", 😉)

No, if you aren't from Florida don't fill out the residency application. Non-residents stay non-residents for the four years as far as NSU is concerned. It's on their webpage.

You should know if your pre-reqs are met from the letter associated with your acceptance letter, the one listing your provisions. If all it lists are transcripts from your schools then you should be fine. Just send the deposit now but send the other stuff ASAP for peace of mind. I'm sending all of mine as soon as I get my grade back for my last course I'm currently taking. Also, you can check the AACOMAS you sent them in PDF by going to your AACOMAS application online and downloading it. It ought to tell you if you are deficient any credit hours. Obviously NSU doesn't need to follow that to the word but it would be a pretty good indication. Are there any particular classes/credits you are worried about?

Cool🙂, on the pdf 🙄it shows that I'm missing🙁 .6 hrs of inorganic :meanie:chemistry😕. I skipped 😴the first course 😍in the series:scared: due to AP 😱credit.

Morning all,

I recently was invited to attend the medical school experience program and I am slightly confused as to exactly what it entails and how it differs from a standard interview. Has anyone who has gone through it have any feedback?

Thanks

Anyone from the Pacific Northwest? I had to assure my parents it wasn't intentional that I am considering moving to the very opposite side of the continent.

Yep! I am from eastern WA and am excited at the chance to trade snow, sleet and wind for sunshine and running outside in December!

Does anyone know the average age for entering students? Just curious...

It's not all it's cracked up to be. 90 degrees in January with ******ed humidity gets old real fast. And god forbid it rains in the afternoon on a hot day, you have never been mOre uncomfortable than you will be when that happens.

I think its similar to other medical schools and from the information they gave us I want to say its 24.something.

i disagree, its unbearable and annoying in the summer but in the late fall/winter/early spring, it is very comfortable; if not chilly

I lived in Costa Rica for a while, and it sounds like the weather is pretty similar, although Costa Rica is a bit cooler and the monsoons harsher. I also went to HS in AZ, so I can deal with the heat. Well, dry heat at least.

Weather in FL might just be another adventure!

I just received my interview invite (Jan 6). Good luck to everyone else still waiting 🙂

Only a 4 hour drive, can't complain!

Congrats! Do you know if that's the last interview date?

does anybody know when the white coat ceremony is in 2011, or when classes start?

Please does anyone know how much the graduate dorms cost at NOVA. and the apartment price range for apartments close to the school. I'm trying to decide between KCUMB and NOVA and cost of living is one of my criteria. Thanks!!

I recently paid my 1st deposit to Nova and got an email from Ms. Rondino that she received my first deposit. However, I never received an email confirming they received my letter of intent form which I faxed to them. Did anyone receive an email that they received your letter of intent?

Does anyone know if grades are letters/honors or pass/fail? Thanks!

I'm very skeptical of paying the deposit online if NSU has no record of my NSU ID. Also, neither the number to call for credit card payments nor Ellen are picking up their phones.

Most grades you receive a percentage grade...with some classes being P/F. Your main science courses will all be a number/percentage grade. Since some classes are 6 credits, 3 credits, etc., it sets a weight to the grades.

search on nova's website for "rolling hills" and it will show the graduate housing/apartment options along with pricing. as far as rental communities near school, range from 800-1000 for a 1/1 and 1000-1300 for a 2/2. check out equityapartments.com since they have a few communities around campus. sunforest, palm trace landings, new river cove are among a few of them. others include cameron cove, sundance, and you can find a lot more as you venture away from campus.

Just received an interview invite! Will be attending on January 13th. Flying down from Jersey.. hope the weather holds out up here!

Anyone else interviewing on this day? Good luck to everyone!! 🙂

What is this letter of intent business? I thought you only just have to send in the deposit to reserve your spot. Am I missing something?

You need to sign and send in the forms they've given to you in your acceptance packet.

I'm not at home so I can't check at the moment, but I'm sure someone else will answer your question.

The only thing you need to do right now to reserve your spot is pay the $1250. You need to get them your transcripts, technical standards and FL residency form (if you are an FL resident) at some point, but that deposit is due Dec 14th. I checked through my documents and saw no reference to anything else being due tomorrow.

I emailed the admissions office last week and the only thing you need to do is pay the 1250 deposit, the technical standards certificate and transcripts are not needed to be sent in until 90 days before the start of the semester.

Just declined my seat in the Class of 2015

I hope it goes to one of you that deserves it 🙂

no one else got the intent to enroll form? It came along with the acceptance package. On the top there is a box that says I accept the position and on the bottom there is a box that says I decline the position. You have to fill out your info either on the top if you accept or on the bottom if you decline. I faxed it but only received confirmation that they received my online deposit. I also faxed them my technical standard form but never received confirmation of that either.

I had one

I didn't receive this form... Anyone else?

In M1s, is there a note scribe service or recorded mp3/video since you can technically not atttend 30% of the classes?

Do you need a car for the clinical rotations? Can you use a bike to get around in Florida (or short distances obviously)?

Alright, so a little bit of misinformation was given out by me regarding the Spanish class at NSU. Administration sent us an email today saying that there was a misunderstanding from the faculty who sent out the email to the M1 class saying that spanish was an optional class next semester. Apparently, it is no longer optional (or never was?) and is now a requirement. However, they are offering it as an online option, and class-room option.

Sorry for the confusion to those who were interested in the spanish class.

So for those of you who are concerned about this class being offered to the incoming 2015 class, I would go ahead and contact administration and ask them about it.

there is no official note taking service for the first year, but our class is pooling together and working on getting one for the 2nd semester of 1st year (when we come back in january).

clinical rotation sites are a good distance away from campus. i would have a car (or know someone with one). you can certainly bike to nearby places, although not too many people do (except bike to school/home).

Withdrew my acceptance offer today.

Good luck to everyone still interviewing and waiting to hear back!! Nova was my first interview, so I won't forget the day there. Its a great interview experience there and hopefully you enjoy it too. Congrats to those accepted and attending!

good luck to you Longshanks. where are you matriculating?

I withdrew my acceptance. Good luck to those that have interviews coming up, it is a great school and you are going to love it.

$1300 dollar fee to hold an acceptance? Is this commonplace at DO schools? At other schools, it's usually just a 500 dollar deposit which is due only by May 15th. Does nova not understand that financial aid and other factors play a very important factor in school decisions to charge such an extravagant fee?

I really don't know what to do here. $1300 is a lot of money to just hold an acceptance, especially since it's probably unlikely I'd end up here, just because the region is so far. Tough decision, since right now it is the only acceptance I hold.

Are we supposed to get an email from Dion Dixon confirming our interview? I thought it was weird because they spelled my name wrong for the first time and also because I found it in my spam folder. The email was sent from Dion Dixon but the signature of the email was by Ellen Rondino.

I got the interview confirmation by Linda Ferris. Also they called me one day before the interview to remind me as well. I thought it was a nice touch!

Goddamn that's a lot of money. It was $2000 total when I was accepted two years ago, but it was split up into $950 by December and the remainder by April or May. It counts toward first semester tuition if you end up matriculating.

I'd wait until the very last minute to send it in. If you get another acceptance, great. If you don't, and you'd like to head to med school this upcoming year, then send the money in. It's as simple as that.

good point.

Could any current students please explain the grading system at NOVA? When I interviewed we were told that they use all grading schemes...pass/fail....numbers...letters.... I'm a little confused by this, if any students could explain how the grading works I would really appreciate it!

I was told that it is a percentage grade.

Also, I was accepted today, interviewed on the 7th. Quick turn around, nice Christmas present. Waiting to hear about a Western interview, otherwise I'm pretty satisfied. 🙂

I am a M1, so take it for what it is worth, as I have only completed one semester.

For a select few classes they issue pass/fail. For most of your classes they issue a percentage on your transcript. So if you averaged a 84% in the class, your transcript would show "84" for a grade.

As Booster said, we have some classes in which you receive a percentage grade and some pass/fail. The classes that really matter, your science courses, you get a number(percentage) grade. The number is important because if you get an 84 and another classmate gets an 85 in the same class, the student with the 85 will have a higher ranking.
