NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Im an M1 @ Nova and made a post at the beginning of the semester and I'm writing a follow up now since the semester is over. My first post had some backlash from other students who attend nova but I'm just trying to give you all some balance. The school will tell you all the great things but I'm gonna try and inform you of some of the not so great things. I'm happy here but can't say for certain if given the opportunity to do it all over again, I would again choose Nova.

Biochem here is a complete abomination. On board scores the school always scores "below average", but I will bet anyone out there that it is in fact THE WORST bchem program in the nation. There are four professors who teach the class, and 3 of them are completely awful. Seemingly, the only way to do well in the course is to memorize questions from old exams (they reuse A LOT of exam questions) but what the hell is the point of that. We came here to become good doctors and get a good education... I'm not paying $300,000 to memorize a packet of tests only to look like an idiot on my board exam and in rotations

They tried to put a band aid on the bchem program by adding an additional course called clinical reasoning. In theory the class is a good idea... clinical examples to stuff we are supposedly learning in biochem. The execution has been awful though. We weren't given any course material until the last 5 lectures... so what did we do for the first 15 or so lectures? Who the hell knows. Another thing is the person teaching the course has NO CREDENTIALS. Only things known about her are 1) she JUST finished her residency and 2) she is in a relationship with the assistant dean. I will give you one guess which one of those two things got her the job.

When I interviewed here, I was told all the lectures are recorded and posted online. What an absolute lie. Only 1 class is recorded... and its not even one of our core courses. We've heard all sorts of reasons about why they don't post material, which makes it curious that the other programs here (nursing, dental, etc) have access to their lectures. Bottom line tho, they lied to me. Ne questions you have about the curriculum, ask to see documentation of it because I've heard ppl say they were promised all sorts of things that the school didn't follow up on. I bring this up because I AM NOT CONVINCED THAT THEY WON"T MAKE YOU TAKE SPANISH. Our class received an email a few weeks ago saying spanish would be optional from now on. We they got another email saying spanish is still manditory but it is optional whether to take it online or in a class.

So if given the opportunity where would you have ended up going instead of Nova?

I didn't get an intent to enroll form... Is this for florida residents only or something?

Am I the only one that doesn't mind taking Spanish? I regret not having the foresight to take it in middle and high school, because being fluent in French is totally useful in South Florida.

I don't mind it one bit. I think the ability to communicate with more patients is always a plus. I hear what everyone's saying in that it takes time away from studies for other courses, but the way I see it, you're not just training for boards. You're training to be a doctor in a country possessing a significant fraction of spanish speaking individuals.

I'm from california and hardly know a lick of spanish..I'm grateful to receive the chance.

The spanish course is NOT BAD at all. It takes away only an hour per week, and requires minimal effort. It is just there to help get you comfortable in being able to communicate with patients...not make you fluent. It is very basic spanish. Plus, now they are offering it to students online, which makes it a whole lot easier since you can do it at your convenience.

I am interviewing Jan. 7th, but flying in on the 6th (around noon) and leaving early on the 8th. Is anyone else on here interviewing at that time and wants to explore the city Thurs pm or Friday after the interview???

PM me if you do!!!

Dude, its not that bad, I have issues with Nova but its more with rural rotations and stuff of that sort. Yes, biochem dept sucks, however, they provide you ample notes to actually learn the material pretty well. I myself got suckered into memorizing questions from the old exams and never really learned the material well enough, out of my laziness I must say. However, if you didn't rely on the old questions and read every thing and understood it, you'd have had a thorough understanding of stuff, you could have even supplemented it with Lippincott biochem. Many people did that in my class. And trust me, biochem is a joke at every single DO school, don't believe me? ask anyone at other DO schools.

During my M1 year, every histo and neuroanatomy lecture was recorded. Almost all of anatomy and biochem lectures were also recorded. Dr. T and Dr. Z were very good about tegritying their lectures. It was only Mayrovitz who had a problem with it, he's an uber douche so don't bother with him. I can't recall Micro but Dr. Hada and company are extremely nice and excellent lecturers so there were no problems with that class either. OPP lectures are always recorded. So when people told you that everything is recorded, it was in fact recorded last year, no one lied to you. The only explanation for them not to record it this year is that your class has quite a few clowns and you guys probably pissed off the faculty collectively, that or your tech guys are totally incompetent and lazy.

So is there a note-taking service for all of the classes? I.E, the school provides you with the notes for the lecture?

interviewing here soon. can any current students describe what they like the most/least about the school?

what do you (and other students do) to relax?

This question has been anwsered so many times. There is large debate about this. Just look through privious posts....

Interview is pretty easy.

Good Luck!!!

I don't think it's so bad at NOVA....

The medical spanish at NSUCOM gets an A for the idea, but an F for execution. This class was a complete waste of time in its current format. They would have been better off to get every student Rosetta Stone. Some students spent only 1 hour in class every week on this class with little to no homework, while other sections spent 3-5 hours a week on homework. Total lack of consistency.

Also the Biochem was not that bad...It wasn't great, but it could have been much, much worse.

Ultimately NSUCOM is a good school, but like every other school it is not perfect.

When I interviewed at NSU there was a brief mention by the med students giving the tour about different fraternity like groups that students are divided into, similar to the harry potter groups. I couldn't find much about it online, can any current students fill me in as to what that's all about. Is that how students are divided up in the smaller classes like spanish? Thanks

They break us up into academical societies. They then assign 5 or 6 societies to either group A or B. Group A usually does labs together (histology, anatomy, etc.) while group B is in another class, and vice versa. For instance, Group A would have OPP from 1-3 and then anatomy from 3-5, while Group B had anatomy 1-3 and OPP from 3-5. Spanish was subdivided up by society, so everyone who was part of a particular society took spanish together. We sit in with our society in some classes and do certain activities together. I am probably missing some other points, but this is essentially the basis of it.

Is anyone aware of any med students willing to host an interviewee for a night?

But I don't know that much else about the school. Can those students and others who interviewed give me your perspectives on the pros of the school versus the cons, and anything specific to nova that attracted you there? Like are there lots of student groups/organizations, is community-involvement big, is the semester a block schedule etc. Is Osteopathic techniques big at the school (I know some D.O. schools really emphasize it while some only give lip service)

Thanks!

Hey everybody! I finally decided to post my .02. As an undergrad at nova who is also on the border wanting to go to NSUCOM, I can tell you the organizations are active, and will also get involved doing presentations for undergraduate students. The OMM fellow as well as other students from her club demonstrated a lot of OMM techniques. I don't know how its emphasized in the curriculum but you will definitely learn a lot about it. For a small-ish school, students are super active and NSU as a whole hosts many events. Nova is big on making itself a giant community and it has reflected positively in my experience.

But I would also like to see here other opinions on why everyone wants to go to NSUCOM or what it's general reputation is.

Have a good New Year!

Well, it took over 8 weeks and 4 phone calls to get my application showing as complete but it's finally done. My committee letter was always showing as missing but I'm not sure what the difficulty was; each time I called they said they had it and would update my profile to reflect that info. Seems super late now.

Hey guys,
Just wondering who else has an interview coming up. I am interviewing Jan 6th. Is anyone else interviewing that day (or the 7th).

for the medical school experience program we wear the same thing as for a normal interview right?

also does anyone know what happens during the patient simulation exercise?

Hey guys,
I am confused about what this whole "medical school experience" interview is.

I was invited for an interview for Jan. 6th and my invite just simply states that I have been invited for an interview.

Howeve I am seeing people post about a "medical school experience interview". Is this different from the standard interview, and if so, what is it all about and why are some people chosen for this interview and not others?
Thanks.

Based on the previous posts, I think the "medical school experience" interview is sent out to those candidates who have very high stats and are the ones they want to join the class next year. I think these candidates pretty much have a spot if they decide to join.

I had a regular interview and was accepted the regular way. Don't worry too much about this. Just relax and be yourself!!! Good luck :luck:

Quick question for you guys:

WebStar's Application Summary shows that they received my secondary app on Dec. 6th but does not show them having received my letters. I had made my letters available to them through Interfolio earlier in the month. My understanding is that when the schools are taking a look at your file, they'll simply go into Interfolio and download your letters, at which point I assume they'll update my Application Summary.

Is this how it worked for you? I just want to make sure there isn't something more I should be doing to help move the process along.

As a side note, I called the Admissions Office and they're closed from December 24th through January 2nd, so maybe this will all get ironed out in early January.

i got an invite to the medical school experience program before i sent in my letters. I got an invite around early december, and scheduled it for jan

after confirming the interview i went to interfolio and delivered the letters to nova. after about 2-3 days i got an email from nova saying they received my letters.

hope this timeline helps with some of your questions

Yes, thank you! Although I now have a question about "delivering your letters."

My advisor told me Interfolio doesn't send the letters, it merely makes them available to the schools so when they're ready, they can go in and download them. Is that correct?

If not then I sent my letters to both LECOMs before they asked for them... so hopefully she's correct.

I definitely paid to deliver my letters to NSU electronically. It's not like AMCAS.

i delivered my letters through interfolio. it was not automatic.

i went into deliveries, then typed in nova or nsu com and clicked search. the school came up and i clicked send, then went through 1-2 confirmation screens where u check another box and then send it, and a confirmation email is sent to your interfolio email.

the delivery costs for me were zero since my undergrad had some kind of university discount with them. but i definitely had to manually deliver them.

Very interesting. I'll have to double-check with my advisor. I was led to believe I open a VirtualEval account, tell them what schools to make it available to, and they just check the boxes. If NSU is waiting for me to manually send it, I need to know. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up!

I just turned down my acceptance to Nova- I hope someone wonderful gets my spot! Good luck!

Just wondering who else has an interview coming up. I am interviewing Jan 6th. Is anyone else interviewing that day (or the 7th).
I will be interviewing on the 6th.

Where are you coming from?

I'm coming from NJ, right outside of NYC. How about you?

Have you had other interviews/acceptances or will this be your first?
This is my first. I started applying a little late in the cycle though.

I am coming from Tampa, about a 4 hour drive.

The academical societies are a way to break down the ~250 students into managable size. There are 10 societies, so each society has ~25 students per year. Some events / classes are completed by society, but for the most part this is just about keeping a managable span of control with respect to advisors, disbursement of info, and a way to meet classmates. The school is trying to make the societies a more integral part of the school through upper year mentoring, community service, etc.

Hey guys.

So I will be flying to FLL on Jan 6 and then staying at the Courtyard Marriott Plantation, before attending the Medical School Experience Program on the 7th.

My flight gets in at 2:35 PM EST so I was planning on getting a car from the airport and driving around the area a little bit. I'll probably also double check which building is the right one as well. Is anyone else going to be here for the 7th?

My flight back home is at 6:25 EST from FLL so if anyone needs a ride to the airport after the Experience Day just let me know.

Does anyone know the dress code for the experience day? I wouldn't mind working around sim patients and such in a full suit, but I just want to make sure everyone else isn't in scrubs or something or if i missed the memo.

Thanks!

Hey guys, is anyone going to be interviewing on the 18th???

Grrrr. I am so jealous of you guys who have received the "medical school experience" invite. I have my interview on the 6th and it's just the standard interview. The med school experience sounds fascinating and could be a lot of fun.

Am I correct in assuming that those who are invited to this med school experience interview are applicants who the school is VERY interested in, and if invited, you have an extremely high chance of being accepted?

Also, I am wondering for those peons like myself who are just attending the standard interview, is it much harder to receive an acceptance from this pool of applicants?

What I mean by this is, if they are accepting most of the applicants from the med school experience interview, does that mean they accept few from the standard interview? Thanks.

I think getting any type of interview is a very good thing. The school is interested in you, and they want to see you beyond the numbers and whats on paper. Just be yourself. If you are really interested in medicine it will show. In my opinion the interviewers usually have much more experience sifting through bull**** than the interviewees have delivering it so it's best to just be yourself.

Of course a lot of people are going to be a little nervous, because most people don't like to be scrutinized on the hot seat. It is also your dream and your future, and NOVA is an excellent place to study medicine. Just breathe (don't hyperventilate though)

I would suggest trying to get conversations going with other interviewees. They are probably very interesting people and you will probably be able to complement each other with information on different issues such as healthcare, medical schools, specialties, or you can simply talk about hobbies and interests. On the 7th and following interviews that's what I'm going to try to do. I have plenty of questions that I'm sure some other interviewee will know the answer to that I don't and vice versa.

Getting an interview is great.

If you are the kind of person who likes to operate under optimism tell yourself NOVA accepts a high percentage of their interviewees.

If you prefer to operate with pessimism because you do better feeling like you have a chip on your shoulder tell yourself that right now it's no longer the beginning of the interview cycle.

Best of luck

for those who have been accepted, whats the next step? i sent in my $2000 deposit but have not received any additional information from the school.

Did you get the email confirmation that your deposit has been received? I got like 2 of those. I also got an email from the registrar office about NSU email and I went ahead to set up my NSU email account and Sharklink ID. That's what I have done so far. I think more information will come sometimes later.

I interviewed mid November and I still haven't heard anything back. I keep on calling in to see if they "have everything" which they do but my status on webstar still says "invited for interview" and on the phone they say that im still under review.

Is this normal? I thought the usual notification time was 2 weeks.

It's possible that they're a little backed up due to the holidays. It took slightly over two weeks for them to get back to me, and that was even before thanksgiving hit and people started going on vacation.

I'm also going to be attending the med school experience day Friday 1/7/11. I'll be showing up in a suit as well, although it would be hilarious if someone wore scrubs.
Hopefully I'll see some of you there.
I'm looking forward to getting out of the cold...

What a doozy of a deposit. Submitted it today. The residency forms aren't due until they receive the deposit right?

The general consensus is that the residency forms are for Florida residents to prove their status. If you aren't a Florida resident (which it looks like you aren't?) you wouldn't need to do these.
